lol, thanks. actually it was this plug here that prompted me to take a look at Vipre. from the discussions in that thread, the program sounds adequate for my needs.

I am running it now here and I have to say this new version seems much nicer than the one I trialed a while ago. This is working great and seems to be very light on resources. The firewall is not that intrusive either.
