UltraSearch: a competitor to Everything?

I just ran across this today on Addictive Tips. I like that it doesn't need to run in the background. One thing I noticed with Everything, I would get results that didn't show new files I knew were on the system.  Then I'd have to manually bump up memory usage. I didn't get any indication from the app that it needed more ram.  I just noticed after awhile something wasn't right.

This seems a bit slower, which is expected since it's not running in background. One thing I like is it will work with my Selector program.  If I select a file in Explorer, or highlight text in an editor, or copy text to the clipboard, then launch UltraSearch via Selector, it comes up with the selection as search term. I like the simple design.  The programmer wasted time creating htmlhelp .chm file when you really don't need it with this.  But it is nice to see a freeware that comes with some kind of help file.

I've just put it on both Windows Seven and Vista machines and turned off Everything.  I'll see how it goes.

Thankfully Everything works flawlessly on my system so I took a pass on UltraSearch.

btw the JAM Software developer seems pretty talented to this non-coder. I also use the freeware TreeSize Free.

i use Everything a lot and i remember quickly testing out UltraSearch as a possible replacement. it got uninstalled pretty quick - i forgot why so i've just installed it again and played around a bit with it.

i guess it depends what you really need from your search.  

UltraSearch is uninstalled again now. it doesn't have the range of options that Everything provides. i won't list them because they are available to see if you look in the configuration settings in Everything.

in brief; it just looks like Everything allows you a lot more ways to fine tune your search. if you don't need all the fine tuning then UltraSearch seems okay.


(i appreciate that if Everything didn't find/display files that i knew were on the system then it would be of zero use and would be uninstalled too. but, thankfully, it appears to work fine here.)

Exactly, it really needs (at least a few) settings to challenge Everything. For example, I would like the option to find folder names as well as file names.

If the development continues, I can see keeping UltraSearch because its speed is certainly impressive.

Thanks for saving me from having to download UltraSearch.  The Everything search engine works flawlessly on my computers, but my Software Sickness made me curious about UltraSearch.  Now that I know it won't find folder names, this latest bout of illness is temporarily cured.

I see what wuz up.  Everything default cache sizes are only 4 MB.  Changing to 0 makes them unlimited.  Now I shouldn't have to adjust 'em anymore.

That's the trouble with hotkey things. Even if you no longer run the program, you find yourself reflexively hitting the combination when you want to do the function. I had to put Everything back. Now I know it has an unlimited cache setting it should be fine. I always liked it. Ultra Search doesn't have to run in the background anyway. It's still there if I want to use it.

Sweet news--UltraSearch now has the option to search folder names.

UltraSearch doesn't seem to update as fast as Everything when files get deleted, moved, renamed, etc. With Everything any changes show up instantaneously.

Nonetheless, as far as file finders go UltraSearch is a solid #2 IMO.

Now if I can just figure out how to add exclusions to the Exclude Filter tab (ie. the darn Add Pattern button won't activate?! ).
