Fast Keystroke Freezes Up FARR
« on: September 22, 2009, 07:29 PM »
Hello friends:  :)

I've noticed a little bug with FARR. I think my keystrokes are too fast for it. When I hit "pause/break" and immediately type something, FARR freezes up. It does display the history, but the text box won't show a blinking cursor and won't allow anything to be typed in it. I can't even select a history item shown. I then have to close and restart FARR to correct it.
Kind Regards,

This never happened to me. Not saying that it can't happen, but I've tried to start typing as fast as I cam after hitting break... to no avail... Farr remains responsive.

I've been having a somewhat similar problem with FARR lately: after not using the computer for a while I go to it and almost immediately hit the PauseBreak button to bring up FARR and then a single letter (one I've tied aliases to). Then I fairly often (once every two days or so) get a FARR memory error. Clicking "cancel" is enough to get FARR to respond like usual again. But every time after that when I bring up FARR and type that same letter I get the same error. If I shut down the FARR process and restart it again then the problem disappears, for the moment. Does anyone recognize such a problem? In some such cases FARR keeps giving error messages until it crashes, but in most cases there's only one error popup. My hunch is that some harddrive has gone into sleep mode and that FARR can't handle that properly.

(I've had a similar problem when loading conflicting plugins. The worst was loading the 2 different plugins for Everything at the same time -- Tiny Everything and the other one which name I forget. Apart from that, no problems.)

I've unloaded the Everything plugin to test...

Nod5 - my FARR is on a partition which never sleeps...

as Armando noted, a list plugins being used may give a clue as to why this happens.

Though my problem above might be a different one than the others have reported, my hunch at the moment is that the errors began after updating to fscript.dll v 1.19. I'll try to backtrack to a previous version. But the problem only happens seldomly and therefore hard to troubleshoot.

Okay, this is now happening once a day. Funny enough, it seems to happen around the same time of day; in the late afternoon. It's now 5:45P CDT. One thing I noticed this time is that it froze up even when I wasn't hitting another key just milliseconds after FARR pops up; I waited a good two seconds before typing...

if you let it take some time does it wake up?
it sounds like it might be this same issue of drives being asleep?

Hey mouser:
Nope. When it happens, it's become obvious since when I hit pause/break, FARR pops up and does not have a text cursor. When it works normally the text cursor blinks immediately.

Also, no, it's not a sleeping drive. It's quite odd; I use FARR countless times daily, and I use it in the same manner each time. I hope this helps diagnosing. One thing: if I remember correctly, this issue cropped up after the last FARR update. But I may be wrong...

Okay, it did it again just now but this time I couldn't get it to close using the X button or the escape key. Just an FYI. :)

ok ill tell you what, it seems like it's happening enough that it would be useful for me to send you a debug version to try and send me info when it happens again.

CleverCat: you can type 'aplugins' in Farr and post a screenshot of the resulting window or you can go to 'Options > Troubleshooting Log' and post that info.

I sometimes get that when booting up without the usual USB Drive plugged in. I wasn't actually sure it was FARR that was causing the problem, but I wondered if there was some history somewhere??

This may be unrelated? but, generally the first invocation of FARR on my system will not focus the FARR window correctly (with cursor, etc). No dramas, just have to delete the alias and search string that went to the text editor by mistake and do it again after clicking into FARR... Never freezes though.

I do get FARR crashing quite regularly after updating the Plugins (during development for example). The Plugin window will display normally, but when I click "OK" FARR disappears (crash and burn).

Normal running is fine though. I think I should go through and clean up my installed plugins: I noticed some were throwing errors in the error log  :-\
