Note Taking Software
« on: July 23, 2009, 02:48 AM »
I just found this amazing programme on Gizmo's site...

It's called QuotePad and it's better than ShirusPad IMHO

http://quotepad.info/

I particularly like the feature that when you select text on a Web Page and paste it, you automatically get the URL, and the Reminder works well too! It docks to screen edge and pops out when you mouse over.

I'm busy reading all the Help online so hoping to discover some more features!

I asked A!K Research Labs about this, because it looks so close to their program Notesholder Lite.  If I understand their e-mail correctly, QuotePad is a rebranding experiment of Notesholder Lite.  I haven't tried it yet, but if the screenshot is anything to go by, some people may prefer QuotePad's permanent filter box.

I am a registered user of Notesholder Pro.  Don't like the alarm system of either version much, but otherwise they're nice.  Main advantage of Pro over Lite is being able to have categories of notes - sort of parallel ribbons.  You can install both Lite and Pro as portable.  Main disadvantage of Pro is, last time I tried it via a USB stick at work, Trend OfficeScan deleted it, yet another false positive   >:(  Lite is OK, though.

BTW you don't have to make Notesholder dock to the screen edge, you can hide that and just us hotkeys.  I don't know why they add an extra hotkey slot ot hide the program, just pressing the "new note" hotkey twice or Esc once does just as well.

Yes I saw that and I've just got the hang of Filters in QuotePad - they mention categories but I can't find it anywhere!

I also like the GUI in QuotePad...and the reminders!

I think I bought my license when they had a discount, or it might have been a Bits du Jour discount.  But you can't rely on discounts...  I don't see anything about a payware version of QuotePad?

Yes, CintaNotes is very promising. Still in beta, but so far so good. The developer is determined to keep it simple, which is  a good sign. His design philosophy is a model of clarity and gives me cause for optimism.

When I mentioned QuotePad in a thread https://www.donation....msg169322#msg169322 some weeks ago, the similarity between QuotePad and Notesholder Lite was correctly noted by rjbull. I'm definitely glad to hear QuotePad is legitimately authorized software-- thanks rjbull for sharing the results of your email correspondence.

I'm just curious what you prefer about CintaNotes.  I ask as a CintaNotes user myself who was somewhat interested by the posting about QuotePad.  The two programs seem quite similar at first glance.

QuotePad looks interesting - it would be nice if it retained a bit of formatting though.

I know it is basically a text grabber but it would be nice if it rendered HTML from webpages a bit and included copied images (or maybe optionally HTML links to those images which are rendered live).

The fact that it displays all the URLs captured is quite nice but it would be good to have them active in the text rather than by a button at the bottom.

Having said all that it is free and nicely done - just being picky I suppose ;)

Yes, I see.  The Table of Differences is very like the Notesholder one.  Rather odd rebranding experiment...  Still, I like the application, especially as it's small and can be portable.

Haven't tried CintaNotes.

@sajman99:  I felt a bit uneasy at sharing a private e-mail, but as QuotePad Pro would take you to A!K Research Labs anyway, don't suppose they'll mind too much.

This looks great, it even supports Chinese text search! I wonder how it performs with 100MB+ text stored.

One defect is you can not define Win key as global hotkey

And instead of display datetime, I hope it could say XXX minutes ago, XXX days ago, etc.

Well it's difficult to say (which is why I said I prefer it and not that it's better), but I reckon it's the GUI and the ergonomy, plus the very helpful dev. and his extensive roadmap.

No, no reminders, I'm not sure that it's in the roadmap and not sure it ever will be - that doesn't seem to be the prime purpose of CintaNotes.

I copy pasted 177KB of txt and quotepad window froze. Did it use C++ to handle strings?  :(
