YES! YES! YES!  Finally!  Without having to edit my own file with zoom preferences on a page by page basis,  my endless quest for a good text zoom addon has finally come.

I just noticed THIS NoSquint (http://urandom.ca/nosquint/) new addon over at the Firefox addons page (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/55/) for the never updated, less impressive, TextZoom.

This guy is my freakin hero!  As with the previous text zoom, it will adjust the zoom permantly on a whateverpercentyouwant basis OR remember how you zoom on each domain you visit for each following visit.  Awesome.

Just wanted to mention that my all-time favorite Firefox Extension, NoSquint (http://urandom.ca/nosquint/) has been updated to version 1.0 with many changes & fixes.  It is MUCH smoother now that before, especially when loading multiple pages.

I removed fasterfox to when i realised what it was doing, prefetching i'm thinking must increase the amount of bandwidth i use, and being on a satellite connection with 1gb limit b4 i pay 10cents a mb in downloads means i dont want to be getting stuff i may or may not want, i was stuck on a dialup service for so long that even a 264k satellite connection is sooo much faster anyway  :)

FasterFox only does prefetching if you have it turned on - and the other settings that it tweaks are useful... "persistent connections" is really great, and even decreases bandwidth usage by an extremely small amount :). Apart from the prefetching, all the other settings fasterfox do can be tweaked manually though, iirc. Still more convenient having access to them through fasterfox imho.

I stand corrected  :) will see if i notice anything, bit difficult tho, i only get to use the broadband on weekends at the moment as i am away during the week so it seems fast no matter what and the dialup i'm using during the week always seems slow lol

I've recently installed the iGoogle Sidebar at work, and am finding it to be very useful!

It compresses and displays your iGoogle page in a sidebar: much easier to display, click, hide again.

In the end of this post I have a question for you!

... explore Firefox once again.  Only problem is, we all know it takes at least 10 extensions to achieve the features of an Opera or Maxthon.  Ok, so be it, I'd like to ask everyone of their favorite or most useful/powerful extensions...

After a long brake I have taken up Firefox again.

Two of the many things I like about Maxthon 1.6 ("Classic") are 1) the Maxthon Start Page which gives me my recent favourite links at once, and 2) the extra toolbar with shortcuts to programs of my own choice.

MaxStart.gifFirefox Extensions: Your favorite or most useful

max.gif

----

All Customized Links is an "okay" substitute for half of the Maxthon Start Page, so my biggest problem with Firefox is that the only add'on I have found that comes close to the toolbar for "fav progs" is Launchy, and the author gave up updating this program two years ago, even though I think it still needs a lot in userfriendliness. The prime feature of Launchy is still working fine, but it is a nightmare to add links to other programs if you are not a coder. And it is for such a feature, links to other programs, I became interested in the first place.

So I came here to ask if 'you' know of a program / an add'on that will add such a feature to Firefox, making it easy to reach my favourite programs from the inside of Firefox 2, please?

Oh, I forgot to tell that the primary reason I installed Firefox again is the program Firefox Preloader which CyberNet News just wrote about. The preloader is from February 2005 but is working okay with both Firefox 2 and 3, and I cannot understand why 'no-one' have told about it before. Of course you might not care for Firefox Preloader if you are running Vista with Superfetch enabled, but on my XP the preloader does magic. Nothing less!

(...) the open source Firefox Preloader. It can be set to startup when you turn your computer on, and with it Firefox will always be at your beckon call. If there are multiple versions of Firefox installed on your computer you can decide which one you would like it to work with.

This feature does come at a cost though. When the preloader first started up on my computer it used about 4MB of memory itself, and Firefox was using about 10MB. Those aren’t drastic numbers, but for those of you conscious about the memory usage you might want to think twice before using the preloader. Also, when you close Firefox it doesn’t actually close all the way, instead it’s just tucked away so that it will still start quickly the next time you go to use it.

Firefox Preloader (for Windows only)

I use a different version of a preloader. It comes standard on all Windows version and consists of two parts. The first is the Startup folder and the second is the Minimize Window button.  :P

Yes, I should have stressed out that I didn't had Firefox as my default browser. I didn't want it in Start. But now I have it placed in Start, and I don't use the Preloader anymore, because I've found two old add-ons doing an even better job:

- MinimizeToTray 0.0.1.2006102615+
   {31513E58-F253-47ad-86DB-D5F21E905429}
   http://minimizetotray.mozdev.org/
   Firefox 1.0 - 2.0.0.*
Minimizes Mozilla windows into the system tray
- Minimize To Tray Enhancer 0.7.5.3
   {de1b245c-de57-11da-ba2d-0050c2490048}
   http://codefisher.or...ize_to_tray_enhancer
   Firefox 1.5 - 2.0.0.*
Adds extra things to Minimize To Tray.

Because of these two useful extras, I now have Firefox as my default browser again. In Start.
- I hope Firefox 3 will have some similar features.

The preloaders/minimizetotray do work, but imho it's bad little workarounds, when the real focus should be on optimizing the startup sequence... it's not that it's worries me much constantly wasting 25, 50, or even 100 megabytes of memory, even when not using a browser, but it's just not a solution, it's symptomatic treatment. And that's wrong :)

Here's a nice FF extension I came across today.

Fission incorporates the navigation info (that you usually see in the status bar) into the address bar so you can see it all in one spot.

It modifies the Firefox address bar to show load progress in the background using a color or a texture (any image).

Fission.jpg

It can optionally:
Move the normal progress bar to the right of the address bar.
Show the connection status in the address bar (depicted in screenshot)
Display links you hover over in the address bar.

nosh: sounds interesting - can it handle the mouse-over info that the status bar also does? Coz then one could disable the status bar and get a bit more screen real estate :)

Yup, the links you hover over are displayed in the address bar with a hover.jpg preceding them so you know they're hovered links, they stop showing up in the status bar if you have the feature enabled. I've disabled that, find myself instinctively glancing down all the time & I need the status bar for other stuff anyway. The connection status is nice though, much more noticeable in the address bar.

The Firefox 3 betas are just amazing so I'm getting even closer to ditching Maxthon for Firefox (old habits die hard...). In that process I've found some new add-ons. One such great find is Drag & DropZone Searching  http://www.captainca...pzone-searching.aspx
004[1].JPG
opt.png

It is somewhat similar to  Drag de Go https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/2918 (which does not work with FF3b5 yet). Both react to you dragging some text from a page and then dropping it. Drag de Go uses directional dropping; its reaction is based on what direction you drop the text in relative to the drag starting point. Drag & DropZone instead uses a grid of dropzones shown when dragging. An advantage with Drag & DropZone is that you won't have to memorize the various drag actions since you see them on screen.

Both add-ons are great for quick searching. I wish Drag & DropZone would expand the concept further though. I'd like to be able to use it's drop actions for more than searching, like copying to clipboard, saving to some file and in general passing the dropped text (and perhaps also page URL, title and so on) to external scripts.

Thanks, nxqd, I have been using DM2 since long ago, and think it is great. However, only last week I removed it from start because I've found FileBox eXtender (from Hyperionics) which is easier for my unstable XP to run. Whatsmore, the question was not merely to minimize to systray, but to Start, minimized to systray.

Besides, I have ditched Firefox (again again), and taken up Avant (again) 11.6.08 - and so far I like it a lot! Plus, it will start minimized to tray... Of course I miss a few features from the Mozilla addons, but I am waiting for the final stable release of version 3 before I will try Firefox again. Beta 4 caused me a couple of annoying problems.
