Fastest online backup service (baring in mind im a student)
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:56 PM »
Hey everyone.
As I've just started at uni here in the UK, I thought I'd take the opportunity to use the uber fast broadband to backup my files online.
When I say files, I mean all my media and music, plus differentials of my docs.
So I thought, hey, lets head over to mozy, heard good things about them.
Oh, only 1MB upload speed. Nevermind, other services have to allow for faster, right?
Carbonite, and now trying elephant drive, and they are even slower than mozy!
I wanted to backup to my online webspace. Did a trial, and were talking above the 10MBps range here!
Annoyingly, I'm not allowed to use it for backups though. Against the TnC.
So, has anyone got any suggestions for some fast online backups?
Bare in mind I'm a student, and looking for something not too expensive (ie around the same as mozy, carbonite and elephant), and unlimited backup. (plan to back up probably about 400GB).
Had a bit of a google, but no luck. so naturally, I post here!

Thanks in advance

Speed depends on the setup and connection which varies.

Your University should have server space for you to take advantage of.
How much space, I don't know.
Check with the computer tech department to see what they can do for you.
I'm quite sure the space on the school's server is most likely free.
But 400gb is a lot, but it's possible.

The university only offer 100MB of space for students.

I think I'll have to end up using mozy, as at least 1MBps is better than 300Kbs.
Worked out i could upload 60GB in 13 hours. Seeing as I can leave it on all the time, this shouldnt be a problem I guess.
Still, I'd like to be able to upload my backups faster!
I CAN go faster, its just the backup service limiting me.

humyo.com was the fastest that I have tried (compared to dropbox and spideroak; these are more luxurious howerver).

yeh, I actually got an exclusive on the alpha client for humyo, but foolishly never reviewed it.
Sadly it doesn't have big enough storage for my requirements. Darn. Other than that, I wouldnt mind paying that little bit extra for the upload speed. Other services say the don't limit the upload speed too though, so who knows.
Any more ideas?
