« on: September 09, 2008, 06:45 PM »
I am looking for an app that can test installed ram for memory corruption. I am under 64bit. Some of my applications crashes badly I am wondering if it has to do with my ramns, I have 8 gb ram and under 64bit xp pro.

MemTest86+
Which is usually included in most linux distributions, in case you have any laying around ;)

thanks but that does not seem to be a 64bit application. At least testing is limited to 2047 mb

Try MemTest.

scancode: the API is still called win32, even when running in 64bit mode... but that is being nitpicky ;)

kartal: there isn't really any way around booting your system with a dedicated memory tester, if you want anything remotely accurate and thorough. Memtest86 is the tool of choice. Microsoft also has a windows-based tester, but iirc that also has to be booted into, and you might as well use the tried-and-true memtest86 then.

Vista Ultimate (possibility others?) has a memory diagnostic under Admin Tools.

There is a memory tester in MS downloads

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

It isn't a Windows based app but if you actually want to check the memory for problems why wopuld you want to do it with Windows running - there are then great chunks of memory that you can't test properly.

The Windows Diagnostic tool is a bit like MEMTEST in that you run it by rebooting with a floppy. Simply leave it running for as long as possible (at least overnight).

Testing memory outside a Windows environment isn't 100% fool proof but if it passes you know the problem probably lies elsewhere. Run a windows based tester and you can't really tell for sure what is causing the problems - even if it reports memory errors it may not be the memory but windows itself causing the issue!

When I had memory problems, I also used prime95. Recommended in some computer geeks circles... This will stress the CPU more, but RAM too.

IntelliAdmin's last article was about it.

http://www.intelliad...memory-problems.html

It has a 4 GB RAM limit, though.
