New App! File/Folder Date Organizer
« on: July 26, 2008, 03:47 PM »
File/Folder Date Organizer
--------------------------

What's all this then?

Quite simply, this little app will search through a selected folder and
reorganize everything in that folder (keeping relative paths intact) into
dated folders.

need an example? ok:

let's say you have the following folders

c:\my stuff\something old (files in this folder are dated Feb. 2005)
c:\my stuff\something new (files in this folder are dated Mar. 2008)

Select 'c:\my stuff' as the search folder and you'll end up with this:

c:\my stuff\2005-02\something old
c:\my stuff\2008-03\something new

seems simple and useless... that is, of course, unless you have literally
hundreds of folders and random file sitting in that folder!

How does it work?

All files in the root folder are treated as separate entities and put into
their respective dated folders based on their own file date.

All folders in the search directory are kept in the exact path structure
as they sit in that folder. The date is determined by the newest file date
found within that folder and it's subfolders. Because of this, it ideally
works with folders that only have one level of subfolders within itself.
If you use this in folders that have multiple layers of nested folders,
the files/folders being moved to a dated folder will all be grouped by the
very latest file within that entire tree!

Operations can be logged (enabled by default) so you can keep track of
where your files are moved to.

Have fun cleaning up! :)

This application is NOT unicode compliant so it will not move any scrictly
unicode named files/folders.

Are there different kinds of sorting or only date based?

Following up on kartal's question, it might be nice to be able to choose to sort into A-Z instead of by date.

PS: one thing i like about this is it is smart enough to detect already moved folders so you can run it in same directory over and over and it will just clean up new files

at the moment it's just date sorting as i was trying to make something identify older files vs newer ones. i had thought of making an a-z sort (for sorting music files) but havent done that yet because that should be done right (reading tags, etc). but could otherwise be used in general for properly named subfolders

Very useful app especially, as pointed out by lanux128, for sorting digital photos.

Further to other suggestions, might it be possible to sort the files after the "date created" or the IPTC date info?

That would make sorting digital photos downloaded from my camera such a breeze. In fact, the "Date Created" would be better than IPTC as digital cameras do not save IPTC date info for videos.

Excellent app! I spent hours searching and this one is the only one that did anything close to what I need.

Features I would like to see:
Scheduled sorting (and with that, naturally, the ability to save settings and run from the system tray at startup)
more sub-folder alternatives (like 1 week old, 2 weeks old etc.)

Thanks for making my life easier!

i'm glad i could help :)

yeah, i will add the ability to save settings (outside of time constraints, this would've been 'dropped in' as well)

weeks option is very doable, i just would have to write a bit more of a sophisticated week-of-year (from the given year) routine to figure this properly.

i'll see what i can get done in the next days

Excellent...

[edit]

You might like to know what I'm using your app to do.
I'm organizing video-files on my mediaserver(popcorn hour) according to the date they were downloaded in order to spend less time in the menu's. Since most of them are weekly downloads of tv-shows it would be practical to sort them by week.

that's cool!

i've only used it (to this point) for organizing image files by date and (of course) for it's original purpose of date-sorting folders with many files/subfolders within.

i need to get on making the options saved.

saw this review of it today :

"File/Folder Date Organizer, an application coded by a Donation Coder member, is a brilliant tool that helps you reorganize the contents of a folder according to the date of creation of the files within that folder. "

Can't I just right click inside the Folder and organise the files with the context menu, "Arrange Icons by" , Names, Size, Type, Modified . Not trying to dampen ones spirits, but arranging the Windows Context Menu to sort files, folders, is just a Google away  :)

heayanae,
the built-in sorting operation you are describing is for sorting the view of files within a folder.
the tool by seedling is designed to create subfolders and move files into different folders based on their date.
so, very different operations.

sorry for bumping this.
but could you add a function to add both year and month to the photos subfolders.
like this:
\2008-02\2008-02-13\photos.jpg

I'll try now with the first version and comment.

Owwwww. I put off the mark in See file actions (SAFE-DOES NOT ALTER FILES)
but when I push Sort button nothing happen.

I am using windows xp pro sp3 spanish version.

Go right because I am using two monitors.
