I usually use WinScraper, and resize the window to 1x1 pixels, moved far off my screen :)

The Windows Update "reboot now" prompt is my favorite application of the FARR "sctrl" plugin. Just "sctrl autom" (on my system), and it stops the darned service until the next reboot (on my own time!) lets it restart.

Cool. Never thought of doing that.

Great, thanks! But where do I find the sctrl plugin? Can't find anything about on the FARR plugin page.

Wonderful article.  Thanks for posting it, and I agree with almost everything on there.  The worst part is that these people prey on the users who just want to click a button and see porn, the ones that are too busy trying to be cool and entertained to actually figure out how things work.  Or, the poor grandma who just wants to email her grandkids back and forth and really can;t figure out how it works through no fault of her own.

Norton was the best.  Quicktime, haven't used it for years.  Realplayer?  People still use that? JAVA is useful, and Outlook 2007 is fairly nice, although it took a long time to get here.  Flash web sites, that is a BIG pet peeve of mine.  Windows update I don't agree with at all.  Worried about Genuine Advantage?  GET LEGAL.  It hurts nothing and reveals nothing if you are running a legal copy of Windows.  Windows Update works, period, probably one of the few things they have done right.  MS hater or no, it does have it's advantages.

An phrase short for "Okay, thanks" that originated somewhere on the internet a really long time ago. A snarky, quick dismissal. The word today is now old and unfunny, and everybody who still uses it should be lined up and shot.

When we were youngsters back in the beginning of the seventys, and had to learn German, we constructed a language mixture of various Danish dialects, Norwegian, Swedish, English and German. It became our internal code language that only a few could understand. And it was great fun, yeah, it really was great fun - for a while. So I do understand how lolcode can be popular, if "lolcode" even is a accepted name for this new  dead  language (no-one speaks it). However, I am not sure I ever will bother to learn it myself. But thanks for the enlightment!

Take a closer look on its description. It is programming language. No-one will ever "speak it" because it would be as nonsense as talking C++ or Pascal.

Worried about Genuine Advantage?  GET LEGAL.  It hurts nothing and reveals nothing if you are running a legal copy of Windows.
Except that it sometimes invalidates perfectly legit windows install - this has happened a couple of times at the museum where I admin stuff. And it's bothersome having to install a bloody useless plugin just to be able to get certain downloads from the MS site.

Windows Update works, period, probably one of the few things they have done right.  MS hater or no, it does have it's advantages.
Windows Update is nice, it's the auto-rebooting and constantly-appearing "you have to reboot to finalize update" that's annoying. Oh, and the few times when an auto-downloaded hotfix starts causing BSODs.

My opinions:

Adobe Reader -- Foxit Reader is faster, smaller, and does the same.
Apple -- I hate the Apple Updater for Windows. It keeps coming back and wants me to download QuickTime and iTunes.
Windows Update -- It's fine, besides the restart part. That can be disabled either through FARR, or one of the methods here.
RealPlayer -- FAILS EPICALLY
Java -- Not that bad. You can uncheck the Yahoo! toolbar, and disable automatic updates if you want.
Yahoo! -- Their mail is great. For the messenger, I use Pidgin.
Norton AntiVirus -- I've heard a couple of good reviews, but it's SO MEMORY-HOGGING!
Preinstalled software bundles -- I uninstall everything I understand. The only good thing I ever got out of it was PowerDvd, which VLC is an alternative for.
Outlook -- Thunderbird.
Flash -- Flash games are cool, but I hate all-flash websites. They're so slow!
