Splitting a large MP3 file based on .cue
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:10 AM »
Any app that does this without much fuss? I need to split a few large files for the iPod - smaller files apparently go easier on power consumption.

Try MP3DirectCut. Great program and freeware. :)

Worked like a charm, BTW. Extremely lightweight (180 KB) & does a blazing fast job. This one's a keeper! :)

Looks really useful - maybe now I will get round to transferring all those old cassettes and Vinyl discs! The thing that has put me off is trying to auto detect tracks and cut appropriately.

Haven't really tried it yet - does it have any sort of batch mode?

app103 found another tool to do the same, from this thread here. it seems to be able to do batch-processing as well.

CUE Splitter is a freeware tool that split a single big audio track, mostly an album or a compilation, into the relative individual audio tracks, using informations contained in the associated "CUE" file. Sometimes you can find a big compressed audio file (for example MP3, APE, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WMA, etc...) equipped with a small "CUE" text file that contain informations about tracks title, artist and length. Usually these couple of files are generated by programs like EAC (Exact Audio Copy), CDRWin, BPM Studio, GoldWave or similar. With CUE Splitter you can split audio track files without burning to CDR or decode/re-encode any audio data! Moreover audio files are automatically named using a user-defined "file mask" string, it's tags are filled with information extracted from "CUE" file and, optionally, an M3U playlist file can be generated (option enabled by default). If you like this software and you wish contribute, feel free to make me a paypal DONATION: take a look at the about form or surf to http://www.enfis.it server...

P.S. the website is undergoing some name-change exercise and is now known as Medieval CUE Splitter.

i doubt cue splitter splits without reencoding, as MP3DirectCut does. Definitely the best choice for the job if your source is an mp3. Generally I use foobar2000 for most audio related operations though (if your source was flac/cue, i would have recommended fb2k)

Yes, File Menu --> Save Split.

PS: The cue file already existed in my case with all the parts named. I don't know about whether it'll mark the start/end points by itself but it should be very easy to do manually looking at the visualization.

Menu -> Save Split will presumably split a large file into components tracks

Is there a batch mode that would allow you to supply a list of source 'album' files and split them all into their tracks or do you have to manually do this one album at a time?

I just tried Medieval CUE Splitter. It's a lot more user-friendly & would be the best choice IF you already have a cue file. Unless I'm mistaken, the only way to create/edit the cut points is to enter the time manually, without any visual aid.

AFAICT mp3DirectCut works with one .cue + .mp3 at a time. Medieval seems to have a batch (folder) mode (which I haven't tried). If you already have .cue files it would be perfect for you.

warbird, fb2k is my player of choice but I don't seem to have the diskwriter plugin which is required for splitting. Is this inbuilt or a separate download? I haven't been able to Google a download link.

... IF you already have a cue file.

If you don't have one, try Cuesheet Heaven.

Is included with the installer, though in 0.9.x versions is called "Converter".
