GPLv3 explained
« on: February 17, 2008, 12:22 PM »
Ever wonder what's different about the brand new GPL version 3 versus it's older kin, GPLv2?

Richard Stallman, the guy who came up with the GPL in the first place, explains in non-legalese
so we can all understand once and for all what it's all about:

very nice find.. it's almost a year old so it might be nice to have a more recent video explanation from an objective person, but regardless it's an interesting video to watch!

It's actually fascinating to hear about how v3 features were designed to thwart companies who found loopholes in v2.

...explanation from an objective person

There is such a thing as an objective person on software licenses?  :D
That would be like finding a programmer who is objective on programming language ;) It simply does not exist.
Maybe in some ways, software licenses are worse since a lot of ideology and complete ways of thought are represented by them.

There's probably more objective people than Mr Zealot himself? ;)

GPL version 3 seems interesting. But there'S certainly no unanimity around it. Linus Torvald (another very objective figure  :)), for instance,  repeatedly said that he wouldn't (single handedly) adopt it for the Linux Kernel (of course, IIRC partly because he feels that he's not alone in that decision : so many people contributed to the kernel that it's not only his decision anymore; and he doesn't see how it could help linux development better, and how it would really help fighting "Tivoization").

Linus Torvalds is also not a member of the FSF and does not "fight" for the 4 fundamental freedoms as RMS does. I saw Mr Stallman live in Berlin last Monday, where he gave a long speech about the freedoms, and the history of GNU. He is a very smart man, and has a vision to change society.

Mr Tovalds is also very smart, but not so worried about society and their freedoms.
