For Maxthon fans, Maxthon 2.0.8 beta is available which FINALLY brings support for IE/COM plugins. The link takes you to the announcement and download page...

WARNING: it IS a beta, but this bodes well for a full release this quarter. Finally... my beloved AIRoboform and NetSnippets will be available via integrated toolbars and sidebars

I'm downloading this now and will report back with my impression/experience.

I tried Maxthon 2 (not beta) just a month ago but still like 1.6 better. However, it is clear to me that most of the new addons and plugins are being written for version 2 only, so one day soon I will be bound to give up on the Classic anyway. I just hope for Maxthon 2 to be faster than so far, and to give me back my Maxthon Start Page in the way that I want it to be. Also, I must be able to add any search engine.

But I didn't try it for long and I didn't take notes on my experience, so maybe I have forgotten or just didn't figure out all of the options and it can already do what I am asking for? Hmm... I better remember to try the next version! You will remember to tell when the stable version with these new features have been launched? Yes, of course you will, Darwin.

Maxthon 2.0 has been very disappointing, up until the November & December releases of last year (2007). I still barely prefer the classic version, BUT 2.0 is making great strides, considering how bad it seemed at one point.

Yes - I agree Vegas. I've been disappointed by its footprint, more than anything else. This beta is RAM intensive, but seems to be cured of the CPU issues I was seeing with 2.0.6.

On a side note, I was thrilled about using Roboform and Netsnippets with Maxthon 2.0.8 and confirmed that they work. I rebooted, however, and Roboform is GONE. I suspect I need to reinstall it to "get it back"...

OK - reinstalling Roboform did the trick. So far, so good. The resource consumption is much less onerous and I am well pleased.

I'll keep you posted, Curt! Note, though, that with IE/COM plugin support there is little reason not to try this again yourself. Maxthon 1.x and 2.x will coexist happily on a machine, so you won't be overwriting anything.

The above toolbars will automatically show in the setup center when available, other IE toolbars might work too, but you will have to apply a hack to show all other detected toolbar which are not officially supported:

1. Open your config file {maxthon folder}\{your account}\config\config.ini
2. Find "settings" section, add this line "LoadAllIEPlugin=1"
3. Start/Restart Maxthon. IE plugins not listed will show in "Maxthon Setup Center" => "Plugins" => "IE extensions".

Then you can try enabling and testing it.

Thanks, Mamoun! I've had absolutely no trouble so far with the beta, am enjoying the support for both NetSnippets and Roboform and the performance tweaks that have been made

Curt, if you haven't already installed this to give it a try, I'm pretty comfortable suggesting that you do! Note my comment in my previous post about M1 and M2 coexisting, if you're at all worried. I'm going to switch my wife from M1 to M2 as soon as 2.0.8 comes out of beta.

Thanks, Darwin. I will of course try it out, but my prejudice is that it will be too slow for me. Not because I expect it to be noticable slower than 1.6 but because I am getting used to the fastest Internet browser I have ever met: ThunderBrowse! Wow!! For the more simple kind of email-link-browsing it is so much faster than everything else I have tried that it is hard to beleive!!!

Hey guys, I left maxthon for firefox, but I'm considering to go back to maxthon. Firefox's ram usage is absurd in my opinion; almost always more than 200mb, sometime between 400-500mb -- I understand the performance implications-issues etc, but this more ram than what win XP uses right after booting!!! I don't know if it's the case with firefox v3 though.

What about maxthon 2 ? How's ram usage ?

It is very easy to make Firefox jump to half a giga, in fact when I read your post my Firefox was taking up 520 MB. But I use to minimize it once in a while, just long enough for it to free some memory, because in general I think it uses exactly the same as the others.

Are you looking at virtual size ? Because from what I see, commit charge is lower for maxthon. Albeit not THAT much for maxthon 2 -- still, lower.

Two tabs, all of them, and the exact same pages - all fresh from Start.

- Maxthon 1.6 placed above Max 2.

K-Meleon is a little impressive, isn't it, very modest usage!

Looking again at the shot, I see I was surprised a bit too soon, forgot to check up the columns headers and assumed they were sorted in the same way as in my Process Explorer. So, those figures (under "Private bytes") are perfectly normal for such "load" in the browsers. "Virtual size" is a complete different thing.

If you don't like to receive these server updates, you can disable them from Maxthon setup center > Advanced > Show Message Notification Window.

IMO, they hardly show (once in a half a year or so) and they are for really big events (or season's greetings), so I think you can safely keep them on.
