Sprankle Character Map
« on: December 28, 2007, 10:08 AM »
Sprankle is a handy keyboard activated character map. Find the character you need with leaving the keyboard.

Win+S to activate. Shift + key shows uppercase menu. Choose a number to select and it's pasted.

"Could" may be the operative word. Nice idea but it's inability to work across all applications reduces it to nearly useless. The developer readily admits that he's unsure what he's doing (on the Sprankle site). Perhaps some D/C'er could give him a hand and mature the utility?!

All it needs to do is route through the clipboard. Simple fix really. Obviously it must be extremely difficult to implement. ;)

Routing through clipboard = easy.

Being able to natively input text (or "export to") all applications = hard (although getting it working for majority of apps = easy).

So what does it NOT work in? Works with everything I've tried.

Doesn't do sith here. I'll stick with the Remote Keys special characters profile (do I hear a lot of "Huh???").

Very ice idea.

So what does it NOT work in? Works with everything I've tried.

Doesn't work in MS Word, OpenOffice.org, EverNote and probably many others.

Sending the character to the clipboard would definitely be a better way. It's an Open Source app, so I guess that anyone who understands the script (C++ ?) could add this feature by default. Anybody wants to do it?

PS : It could probably even be linked to farr : type the letters in farr, selecting the character sends it to the clipboard. Would it be possible to make a few mofications to make it play nicely with farr? Would make a nice plugin...

EDIT : added this as a plugin idea for farr

Special characters menu (Developer's Page, scroll down for the program) or Download HERE.

Here's a screenshot and a link to a freewaregenius review page of this tool:

It's more reliable than Sprankle -  it sends the character to the clipboard. But if you have a lot of characters to search in, Sprankle's "search as you type" feature seems better.

See alsothis thread for another take on Special characters menu.

another option is Skrommel's Accents, where you can press the designated key repeatedly until you get to the character that you want. as a visual guide, a tooltip will appear showing the available accented characters.. btw i think a screenshot will make things a bit clearer.
