CompUSA to close all stores

CompUSA has been sold and will close all of its stores after the holidays. I have purchased many items there at our local store and am not pleased to hear about their closing. I have never had any problems with anything in dealing with them and they are a great resource for everything "PC" in my area. I will watch for some great closeout specials at our store.

Cant say I am surprised being that they have always been a tad overpriced. They just havent caught on to the whole revolution of the internet. Actually, if I remember correctly, most of their business came from the sale of apple products in their stores. They always had an entire half of the store dedicated to Apple.

Can't say that my experience was the same, Josh. I've had them custom build machines for me when I was driving 18 wheelers. I always bought the service plans and was able to get prompt service whenever I needed it anywhere in the country. I'd just park the truck at the loading dock area, bring the machine in and be seen to right away. They did carry the full range of Apple stuff but I never felt that it was at the expense of the PC line. They seem to have had a full range of parts and goodies and their service was FAR better then the nonsense at Best Buy.
Different strokes, I guess.

When Microcenter and Frys moved in around here, I suddenly realized how sucky CompUSA was.  Having nothing to compare them to, I'd always assumed slow service, unknowledgable salespeople, and bizarre return policies were the norm.

Can't say I'll miss them.  But when the doors close for good, the bargain hunting should be extraordinary.

You're probably right. But I'm beginning to hear that Friy's isn't what it used to be in the computer department, either. Shifting focus to other consumer stuff and such. I have no experience with MIcrocenter.

Big Jim - do you have Fry's and CompUSA on the east coast (of Canada) or do you "cross the line" to shop in those stores? Just curious... all we have on the West Coast is Future Shop (which started in Vancouver 20 years ago or so but was bought out by Best Buys at some point).

No, Darwin, neither of those on this side. But I'm a transplanted Texan and veteran of 13 years of navigating just about every road in the US in a big truck so I've sampled a great many of the emporiums.

The 80's style millenium falcon ;-) Remember, the original only had monochromatic CRT's.

Good grief, Jim! Do you have a generator onboard just to power all that gear? It must take about 5 minutes to get all that stuff turned on.

Hahaha!!   ;D Glad that you seem to like the (partial) cockpit view. And, no, not all trucks look like that. I'm afraid that I had a bit of a reputation. It's some computer, some Ham Radio, some entertainment and some combinations of the above.

I'd like to convince you that there was NO steering wheel. Just a joystick. But there was one. The better to rest one of the keyboards whilst going down the road.

I did have a generator or, more precisely, and auxiliary power unit for services while parked. The power up was actually more than 5 minutes but the power down aided by a big red switch.

This is all somewhat off-topic here and I don't wish to transgress. But I've been meaning to put some pics on my Google Web Album for some time. Now's a good time to get it done if you care to see more. I'll return with a link.

I'd be happy to answer any questions but don't think that this is the right place (Mouser??). Suggestions?
