inline attachment mod
« on: December 08, 2007, 04:02 AM »
I am really bummed this is no longer available / supported.  I have been using it with GREAT success on my site for some time. I appreciate the hard work you put into it...  in fact, I THINK - I paid for it.   :)  If not, let me know! (UPDATE: I found no record of it - so I made a small donation!)

THAT being said.  I recently had someone come to my forum and post A BUNCH of images with VERY long file names.  He did NOT use the

brackets.

His file names, which MAY just be Russian words in converted html entities, look like this.....

ПОЕЗДКА в вырицу август 2006 057.jpg

That is ONE attachment.

1. I am unsure why the Russian characters were translated like that - does SMF automatically do that?

2. is it POSSIBLE this is hacking attempt of some kind?  I AM encrypting file names...  if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any comments / thoughts / suggestions.

Doesn't look like a hacking attempt to me - if it was, the filenames would probably be crafted to include shellcode, and be a lot longer. Look how the numbers are very close and vary just a bit, that looks like letters from an alphabet to me; shellcode would have much more variance.

As to why the filenames are encoded as they are, dunno - it's probably the safest best, as there's so much that can go wrong when you're trying to use unicode/utf-8 filenames; not all system support it, and even if the OS + filesystem supports it, if a piece of software "in the chain" doesn't, you'll get really funny results :)

note that since this mod was taken off the smf site, someone else has created and is actively maintaining an independently developed alternative mod for doing the same thing: http://custom.simple...s/index.php?mod=1000

mouser,
Thanks for the information.  I found your modification and re-installed it on my forum.
That new modification doesn't work like yours does!  With yours, I am able to go in and customize the pull-down menu, which is great.
Thanks for all your terrific work!

Hello,
I'm confused all over again!  The inline attachment modification has become essential to my forum!  I'm testing SMF 2.0 beta, and it seems I cannot install this modification.
Can someone tell me if, and where, this modification is being maintained?
Thanks,
Matthew
