"IDEA"  From time to time I like to reorganize the positions and layout of my desktop icons and wondered if anyone knows of a simple routine that will restore the positions of the desktop icons back without having to manually restore them to where they were before being changed.   Also, just "very" occasionally, some conflict or other cause has resulted in my icons on bootup being all messed up and I have to usually restore them back manually.

I could of course use System Restore but that's not always convenient especially if the problem with the icons becoming disarranged coincides are happens shortly affter installing Microsoft Updates which means using System Restore requires the updates to be redownloaded and installed again when a simple little routine which keeps track of, or saves the desktop icons and their positions would be very handy indeed for me.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

also try this tool: DeskSave. it can save into several profiles

Features of DeskSave 7.2.3:

    * Saves the icon layout according to current user and screen resolution
    * Restoring works properly, even if 'Auto Arrange' or 'Align to Grid' (Windows XP) is activated
    * Accepts command line parameters.
    * Auto restore after resolution change, program start or New: resume from standby/hibernation
    * Starts with Windows, if desired
    * Import and export function
    * New: Preselectable location of export file
    * Undo after restoration
    * Provides backups of current and saved layouts
    * Supports English and German language
    * Optional shell extension for the desktop, thereby easy access to functions without background process
    * Very small size (DeskSave.exe: 71 kB, Shell extension: 72 kB)
    * No setup routine, just unpack the archive and DeskSave is ready
    * Easy deletion of all saved layouts and all settings, DeskSave is completely removable
    * Supports Windows 9x/NT/2000 and XP

Ultramon also does this, as well as a number of other cool multi-monitor tricks.  It's free.

UPDATE: I misspoke.  It's cheap, not free.  But indispensable for multiple monitor setups.
