Tranparency in IE 6
« on: October 10, 2007, 11:14 AM »
Hi, I need some enlighten in this.

Recently I just revert back to IE6 but what I can see is it cant show transparency on images (example below). Is it the normal behaviour of IE 6 or I just miss some options somewhere?

capture on IE 6
[attachimg=#1][/attachimg]

capture on Firefox
[attachimg=#2][/attachimg]

both the same image.

This is just a WAG, but is that image a PNG? Maybe IE6 didn't have support for transparent PNGs.  :-[ I don't know.

exactly right: IE6 does not support transparent png files.
you can save it as a transparent GIF if you need IE6 transparency compatibility.

Correct.  User is at the mercy of the software and the developer.

Warning, some people might NOT find this excessive.  :P

1) Run a proxy server, intercept the PNGs and convert them to GIFs and modify the source code of the web pages in realtime to use the GIFs instead.

2) Open source the code

3) Put it on SourceForge

4) Profit!

It's not that you don't have options. Why don't you use FireFox or Opera?

Nice idea.. but still lack of alpha transparency feature that GIF format cant display.

I use both FF & Opera, but as stated above I use Maxthon as my main browser which is using IE engine. Another reason is I found out IE6 engine load faster than IE7 (or this is just my imagination?) and FF & Opera are not resource friendly, can easily go 100MB+ mem usage.

I think IE6 is as or more lackluster in engine speed than IE7. And both are not exactly resource friendly, a issue which gets more accentuated by the use of Maxthon 2, which was reported as a major hog by some DC members.

Maxthon classic is the best thing to use if you have to use IE.

Agreed that FF is a memory hog but w/ 2 GB RAM, I don't care.

You could give K-Meleon a try.

It uses the same engine as Firefox but it is much lighter on resources. When used with the symbiotic loader, it opens faster than IE. I wrote a review about it on my Snailware blog.

This would solve the problem of .png's with transparencies being displayed properly, without adding the problems you mentioned about using Firefox.
