Sita Sings the Blues - A FREE Movie
« on: July 02, 2011, 07:40 AM »
I found this:

http://www.sitasingstheblues.com/

While reading this:

http://mimiandeunice.com/

Mimi and Eunice is hilarious, so I figured I'd download the "Sita Sings the Blues" movie. (Still downloading -- very much looking forward to it, and too impatient to wait, watch, then post! :) )

But, check this from the site:

You don't need my permission to copy, share, publish, archive, show, sell, broadcast, or remix Sita Sings the Blues. Conventional wisdom urges me to demand payment for every use of the film, but then how would people without money get to see it? How widely would the film be disseminated if it were limited by permission and fees? Control offers a false sense of security. The only real security I have is trusting you, trusting culture, and trusting freedom.

You can read more at both those sites. If you're mildly interested in copyright and all that wonderfulness, check it out.

I saw it with some friends when PBS ran it on WNET. We all thought it was a brilliant animated feature.

Well worth the download if you have the bandwidth and patience to grab the HD 4Gb version since it looks best on the biggest screen you can put it on. The dance sequence in the Sita's Fire segment is absolutely hypnotic. My favorite part of the film.

We later bought the DVD since 50% of the profits go to Nina Paley. There's also an Artist's Edition that comes with some nice extras. It runs $100 USD, but the artist gets 100% of the profits from this edition so it's a nice gesture if you liked the movie and can afford it. (We just bought the $20 standard edition, and later on, sent her a direct donation. We figured she'd get to keep more of it that way.)

@Renegade: Thanks for this. I am downloading it now. Looks like a creative development in the movie and on the licencing front.

Edit: Just finished watching it. What a superb movie. Thanks again.

Well worth the download if you have the bandwidth . . . to grab the HD 4Gb version
dont think it depends so much on your bandwith,
as on your
. . . patience . . .

in fact I think I'll try again when it's not still the weekend
looking forward to having a look

I was a bit surprised at the style when I got to watch it, but it was very cool to see it shift like it did. It worked well.

It's non-traditional, but that's what gives it so much character.

Very enjoyable -- I was pleasantly surprised! :)
