also...perhaps a lot of these type of services are provided in some form of subscription cloud services.  i can see that too.

This is awesome.  But don't let bloomberg hear about this!

Thanks much, superboy.  Based on how little sStockQuote actually does in terms of stocks and portfolio stuff, I'm rather surprised by the amount of positive feedback that it gets.  I mean, is there really a derth of apps that do what sStockQuote does?  I'd like to think there are many, much more capable stock apps out there.  Again, I know jack squat about stocks and the stock market so it's an honest question.
My opinion...it's more of a case of the people that would really use this are the kind of people that would have no problem throwing a ton of money for the bloomberg machines.  It's an industry with a lot of confidentiality, lots of specialized (expensive) software, etc.  They don't really care about the fact that their hardware/software is more expensive than it should be.  And most of the people using it are not tech geeks at all and doing their best to keep up with the competition.

But the bloomberg machines are just regular computers with a custom colorful keyboard and the special bloomberg software.  you can't buy them, you can only rent them for $5000 a month.  It's the most genius business plan i have ever seen.  If their software was for sale, you can easily just buy a regular computer, install their software, and it would be the same thing...maybe buy one of those keyboards with the led keys you can customize to your liking.

But times are a changing...i wonder if software like yours might be useful for really tiny shops ( a few people handling small portfolios) that wouldn't be able to justify bloomberg machines.  i can see that happening.  It's actually an interesting idea, i'd like to run it past one of my hedge fund buddies.

Wiznote blows rightnote out of the water and it's free.
Servers are in China, so it might be harder for the NSA to spy on you :). Only the Chinese gov., which may well not care enough :)
This is very strange to me.  First, which Wiznote are you talking about:
http://www.wiz.cn/index.html
or
http://www.wiznotes.com/

I'm guessing the first.  I've tried this thing, it is very plain.  It's basically a simple version of evernote with (IIRC) a couple of nifty features.  I don't understand the comparison.  Rightnote is a windows application, it's not very focused on cloud stuff.  It is very windows-ish, lots of options, lots of buttons, lots of customizeability.  I wouldn't even consider using wiznote over rightnote.

I know most people don't care and are satisfied with their addressbooks and have much more important things to worry about in their lives....BUT, not me.  So after months of research, this is the best I've been able to come up with.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: vCard organizer with batch operations
« Last post by superboyac on January 21, 2014, 06:15 PM »
thanks guys for the comments.  i'm going to make a flowchart of my workflow and post it, that will be easier for me.  the goal is to get a seamless contact management system with the phone and computer, no cloud storage (unless it's your own), and no setting up entire linux OS's like owncloud, etc. or funambol just for contacts syncing.  I'm 80% there i think with the existing tools.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: vCard organizer with batch operations
« Last post by superboyac on January 20, 2014, 08:25 PM »
I will pay a significant amount of money for this.

First, the following software does most of what I need:
http://www.micro-pro....com/vcardorganizer/

The goal here is that I'm trying to get control over my contacts without the help of google, etc.  It's not just about privacy, but more about being able to organize my contacts MY WAY.  Also, the other issue is moving contacts between phones, programs, etc.  I did A LOT of research and there are many options, but vcards seem to offer the simplest universal format, mainly because it can store pictures.

The other thing to keep in mind is I have a complicated, klunky syncing procedure because of all sorts of reasons.

Features I need:
BATCH assign categories to multiple contacts at once.
BATCH modify any field(s).
BATCH find/replace for specific fields.  Like be able to change all 213 area codes to (213).

And here's another one I'm having a hard time with:
My sync file is a single vcf file with multiple contacts stored in it.  But I have to split them out into individual files to be able to manage them in the program above (vcardorganizer).  Then, after I modify stuff, I have to re-merge everything to a single file, and use that on my phone to update the contacts.  I'm looking for a more seamless way to do that.  One way to do this is like so:
--the single file gets updated
--the program compares the fields in the new single file to the individual existing vcf files on the pc.
--if the new single file is different, it asks whether it should replace the existing information (or add entirely new contacts, just like a copy/replace dialog in good file managers)

EVEN BETTER:

actually, now that I think about it, it would just be better if the program can do all this things to a single vcf file that contains multiple contacts.  All the operations:
add new contact
remove contact
modify contact
batch operations
etc

all these things would be easier if it could do it in a single vcf file.  that way, i can sync it with my phone which can parse a single file, and there are no manual steps.  a true syncing solution.

Living Room / Re: What are your favorite movies?
« Last post by superboyac on January 14, 2014, 11:02 AM »
a recent rerun made me remember yet another favourite of mine:
Robert Altman's Gosford Park ♥ In my mind it is within Top 50.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280707/
http://en.wikipedia....rg/wiki/Gosford_Park

You may need to love the classic British understatement culture, to fully appreciate this genre. Some people have said the film isn't funny. However, when I re-saw it last week I was literally ROTFL, when the policeman (played by Stephen Fry) again and again tried to introduce himself; it was just so hilarious! I am big fan of British humour on film and tv, and Gosford Park is not at all boring - even though Robert Altman is an American....

Stephen Fry is definitely hilarious in Gosford Park but the movie is so much more than humor. Altman has a gift for building little worlds out of characters which are so engrossing the plot is almost irrelevant. Much like my other favorite Altman movie, MASH, it's almost disappointing because I could watch another hour of those people doing whatever in that little world.
i f-ing love stephen fry.  Check this clip out, it floors me!
e stephen fry.  Check this clip out, it floors me!

the best part is at 5:18, phil jupitus starts mocking Fry....so funny.

been eyeing Direct Folders for some time
Rather than Listary?

I have both but I end up using Direct Folders a lot more often for some reason.
I actually use both.  I use Listary for most everything, but I also enable the Direct Folders floating top bar.

Wouldn't web id's and stuff eventually evolve like mailing addresses did?  I don't know the history, but I imagine when mailing addresses first were formalized, a similar thing occurred with privacy and such, no?

Living Room / Re: Best note-taking setup with tablet and keyboard?
« Last post by superboyac on January 02, 2014, 11:29 PM »
first of all, I would only use apple here as a last resort simply because of the closed nature of the file system.  I'll qualify that with this: if apple ALREADY has an app that does exactly what you want, get it.  if not, go with android.

the most flexible android tablet is the nexus 7.  if you need bigger and can wait, wait a little longer to get the next large nexus that comes out, nexus 10 or whatever.

with android, you can root it and get full access to the file system.  this opens up a lot of possibilities on the syncing end.  so even if you don't have good syncing in the app you like, you can set that up yourself with other apps like BTsync (which is awesome) or other things like FolderShare, or even just plain ol wifi or cable transfers.  the point is, the file system is open.  that's huge for me.

evernote is the easiest solution here, but it probably doesn't satisfy your more particular requirements.

Check out Simplenote:
http://simplenote.com/

Seems pretty good.

keyboard shouldn't be an issue at all.  find the best bluetooth keyboard you like, and it should work fine.
