thanks Ethyar ;)

I'm confused by #6 - you talk about the UK "assisting" ISPs to protect data and then the article is about bills in the US "to protect federal networks and electric power grids" ?

from the above link
Therefore, we’ve made some small changes to Benubird such as in-built PDF Preview, moveable repository/library and PDF metadata to file metadata syncing.  And whilst we work behind-the-scenes on bolting on an even greater range of PDF features and options, we’re making the current version freeware.
...

BTW — don’t worry, if you’re a paid-for-customer of the original Benubird Pro, we appreciate your support and we’re going to be offering you a free-upgrade to the commercial Benubird PDF Pro upon release.

Is there any license restriction against XnView?

from the download page
XnView & NConvert are provided as Freeware for private non-commercial, educational use and
non-profit organization. Commercial use is not authorized without agreement or ordering
could be worth a shot just to ask?

to me some of the most important things in a viewer are that you can
  • easily zoom, and
  • easily zoom into a selected area

ArtSee doesnt seem to allow one to zoom into a selected area (?)
It's a very stylish viewer, designery even .. at times this distracts form what it's supposed to do -
I'm talking about the way it fades or changes from one image to the next - the way it does this varies from one image to the next and can be distracting I find. I like the way it zooms out - it makes image smaller but keeps the original image in the back - if you keep reducing image you get more and more layers of images reducing in size. Again, this might be distracting at times, but as I say, I like it.
I notice it says "Free for personal use" on the about page ... (there's also a donate button there)
Maybe I should contact the author and/or donate (I'll be keeping it)

Imagine:
I couldnt install it but the zip version is portable so that works okay
It doesnt seem to allow one to zoom into a selected area either (?)

I think Swift PDF does the opposite (nice find though ) to what Coeluh's looking for (it combines as opposed to splitting)

Coeluh
my only idea is maybe not so quick, but definitely dirty :)-
  • Open jpeg in image editor
  • use guidelines to mark out A4 (or A3) size sections - select each individual section, copy and paste to new file.
  • Save as/print to - PDF

or if you want to enlarge image
mark out e.g. A5 size sections, create new file/PDF, print at A4 (or A3) size using page-scaling in print dialogue box

Join up your prints

I installed Imagine last year - just looking I see it's a version from 2006
 - there was lots I liked but I stopped using it cause zoom was very awkward

I see it's been updated, might try it again

General Software Discussion / Re: JkDefrag further developed as MyDefrag
« Last post by tomos on April 30, 2009, 03:04 AM »
If you look at the thread with DiskTune, you find the possible explanation .. most of these softwares are doing all their actual defragging (copying and moving of files) using the same Windows API.  This is also discussed on the MyDefrag page.
-Steven Avery (April 29, 2009, 06:56 PM)

also discussed in this and following couple of posts
No defragger can actually specify physical placement of the files on the platter. ...

I keep waiting version after version after version, but it's never there.  I hate how software people keep adding fancy new features to programs and never pay attention to minor little tweaks.
hear hear -
I really think that that's how most users think.
But very few bigger software companies understand, unfortunately (and often the tweaks arent even so minor..)

I was going to say Irfanview...but that is only free for home use also.

have you looked at wanted: alternative to FastStone Image Viewer
as to what is suitable for commercial use - that can be pretty difficult to find out!

Maybe ArtSee from that thread?

Note Taking Software / Re: SuperboyAC's Notetaking Software Roundup #1
« Last post by tomos on April 28, 2009, 10:26 AM »
right, hmm, well my database is 300 meg - perhaps that is justifies the length of time it takes. i don't know???
I dont think so -
I remember in the forums over there Neville talking about only showing part of the file - whatever part would be visible - so, in theory at any rate, it shouldnt have an effect - not such a big one at any rate.
He is very responsive to problems so probably worth a post there ..

it's the latest version of Surfulator, tomos...

i just tried it; it takes about 12 seconds to finish loading (with four knowledge bases), and that's on a dual core 4800 amd chip with raid striped raptor drives. there are a lot of pictures in the things i've grabbed though - maybe that's why it seems slow - or, i admit, maybe i'm being too picky.
12 sec is crazy time to be hanging around :D
that sounds like something to report at their forums - even if they're big files, it should not make any difference - it only loads enough of the file to get you going.
With version #2 I can open about 20MB worth of files (over 6 files) + the Help file and it opens very quickly.

Actually, like Evernote, subsequent starts are quicker than the first - under a second here

is there a way of running AXEM silently?

"silently"- do you mean that it wouldnt show a window when started? You'd probably have to ask Justice in the AXEM thread, I dont know of a way.

i'm about ready to make the screencast. anyone want to add anything that they think i should mention.
no actually  :)
I just wanted to say that I've been using it since (the script version), using AXEM to start it with windows along with a few other scripts - no problems, happy user

I've been using Surfulator but I'm wondering if Evernote, either v2.2. or v3, is quicker to load. Any thoughts on that, superboyac?
Which version of Surfulator nudone?
I'm using Surfulator (last Version 2) - it starts as quickly as Evernote 2.2 here - although the first start of Evernote seems to be slower than subsequent starts (i.e. Evernote is then quicker - but the difference wouldnt bother me anyways)

Havent tried Evernote 3.

I'd like to try out CintaNotes as a possible replacement for Evernote ...

Very interesting thread!

sticking with the traditional list view:
IQ/SQLNotes has an interface where you can lock any number of columns (from the left side) and then you can scroll horizontally using Control Key and mouse wheel - obviously a great improvement on struggling with the horizontal scrollbar

so you might have this info visible in current window (with the first column locked):-

| ITEM | START DATE | TAG | DURATION | URL | VOL..
scrolling gives [edit] - shows the columns from further right - URL being the "overlapping" column in the two examples [/edit]
| ITEM |URL | VOLUME | LOCATION | ID | WHATEVER
-
obvious advantage being that when I scroll I can see to which ITEM the LOCATION details refer to.
But also I really love the Control Key + Mouse Wheel for horizontal scrolling - it makes it so eeeasy :)

Hi Coeluh,

Take a look here: Show us your (physical) desktop.
actually although he says fysical desktop he means the non-physical desktop

Coeluh have a look at this thread Whats on your desktop?

Rainmeter looks good - must try it out, there's been an update lately I think ...

Re adding images to posts, it's preferred Coeluh cause then the images dont disappear - but also this site is supposed to be in general family friendly (or however you want to say that) and that link of yours is VERY NSFW

well
I just had a look - it showed 113 sites I had visited - I may be wrong but I think it didnt pick up on sites I had visited via Opera(?) (Disclaimer - I swear I wasnt trying to hide those sites :o but if that is the case, then Opera could be a good bet for more privacy...*)

I installed it - then got annoyed with the extra housekeeping involved - and uninstalled it.
noscript? gotta admit I disabled it a short while after installing it ...

* EDIT/ *
no, doesn't seem to pick up on Opera surfing - mind you it's showing a lot of stuff I looked at an age ago and some pages I look at regularly, but I dont see anything there I've looked at this evening for example (FF is my default browser btw)

How does it compare to Paint.NET?

I see from the comments here http://fileforum.bet...aintNET/1096481993/1 that Paint.NET does not support Photoshop .8bf plug-ins

Because FARR and LBC are both well suited to act as front-ends to a portable USB drive and other applications, i wonder if it might make sense to release a preconfigured non-install version of FARR+LBC that work together like a front end for a usb drive.  It would be preconfigured to show applications found just like portable apps launcher does.
Oh...hell...yeah!
that would be really nice mouser :-*
