N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: NANY 2017: Progress Bars of Life Android
« Last post by Ath on January 07, 2017, 08:32 AM »
Can you explain your first comment about "For yearly bars, I've set some up for Christmas and birthdays, there's a Repeat (yearly) checkbox, so the 'event countdown' bar-data is updated after it has passed."
Well, I started out with that message where I only had those type of bars configured, and I went back to see what the exact items where named, then I discovered the type of repeating bars I hadn't tried before, and changed the text quite radically. And it was typed on my tablet. Hence my somewhat messed up message. :-[

Essentially I'm trying to achieve auto-repeating bars with a user-set duration and starting date/hour.

Feature request:
For yearly bars, I've set some up for Christmas and birthdays, there's a Repeat (yearly) checkbox, so the 'event countdown' bar-data is updated after it has passed.
Can the 'Predefined interval' values be extended to repeat for multiple number of these, like 4 months, 3 weeks (development scrum sprint) etc.? And give an optional starting-date/hour for the event? Or maybe that's a whole new type :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Question re/ future software project
« Last post by Ath on January 07, 2017, 07:04 AM »
Well, the development is just as much a 'pain' as is any xaml project (I'm using Xamarin Forms with xaml, as that is the advised way to go for mobile dev. and working in VS2015 sp3, not Xamarin studio, on Windows 10), but VS doesn't have any Xamarin specific auto-complete support (yet) or form designer/viewer, so that takes some searching for the correct keywords to use. But all in all it's been a rather pleasant experience, more so if you're a Visual Studio fan/addict ;D (I'm more of an Eclipse/Java fan :tellme:, but do 'speak' C#-ish too).

There's a 'pcl' (portable code library) that holds all shared code including all forms/screens, only platform-specific code is in a partial class/implementation for that platform, you just run the platform project as default and the dependent pcl is built accordingly.

Deploying during debug is best done on an emulator, and works like a charm using the Google emulator (not using the VS emulator as my hyper-v settings are incompatible, they are explicitly set to allow VirtualBox to run smoothly).
Deploying to a device can easily be done in 3 ways:
  • export to an apk that you put on the device and install manually (or upload using your Developer Dashboard to the Play Store and install from there)
  • deploy directly into the Play Store and install from there (didn't try that yet)
  • run as a debug or release build from VS on a device connected to yiur PC
Building and testing the iOs release requires, by Apple licensing demands, an Apple Mac OS computer running the latest XCode and Xamarin studio installed. (my doughter owns a MacBook Pro I can use :D) The build proces is completely controlled from VS, except for the user-interaction with the emulated iPhone, releasing to the Apple App Store I didn't try yet, haven't been working on the iOs implementation yet.

I guess a lot has improved during 2016, as the whole operation worked smoothly after I found the descriptions for these procedures ;)

Executing the (free) lessons from the Xamarin University was a great help, getting me up to speed with xaml (again), sqlite3 and the multi-platform shenanigans. As said, all in all it was a good experience, and I intend to do more multi-platform mobile apps in this way.

Well, there are Andoid emulators for Windows... ;D ;D ;D

change the background
Background of what? Computer, TV, Phone, watch, tablet?

I need to be at 23.00 hours GMT time at bed.
Set an alarm in your mobile phone, the time is quite accurate, and many people carry it around day and night, you probably too?

Windows Phone 8.x (maybe)

just wondering if this still planned?
Well, with WinPhone (any version) on a marginal market share, it would be on-demand, and only after the translation is completed and iOs version released.
Got a special interest in it? :o

Have a look at Xamarin (Microsoft-owned these days). It's multi-platform-mobile mostly plus Windows Universal apps (but not mac, afaics) with up to 95% shared code, and does support sqlite3 databases and internet connection for data-syncing (ofcourse). Programming is done in C#.
Using it for my NANY 2017 entry 8)

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: Donating Prizes for NANY 2017?
« Last post by Ath on January 01, 2017, 07:00 AM »
It's may be "fair" but I think on reflection you'll agree it's not quite in line with the spirit of NANY, where we try not to judge and rank contributions.
Yup, that's true, didn't take that in account. I'll just drop my idea.

I'd be interested in Beyond Compare, but I'm a heavy user of Compare It! (shareware by Grigsoft, development stopped), so I'm not sure if I'd be the best candidate for that. There are probably others that will make better use of BC :tellme:

« Last post by Ath on January 01, 2017, 05:37 AM »
But how should we decide who gets the other donated prizes?

Idea:
All NANY 2017 participants get to evaluate all entries except their own, and can only give each score (1-10) once. (Suggestion/appraisal by other members is ofcourse allowed ;D)
Most points entry's author wins first pick from the prize list. Then down the list.
Any author can pick only once/one prize, even with multiple entries/high-scores.
Fair?

Edit: dropped as we don't rate NANY entries

Description
After following a Personal Development training, I proposed and volunteered for writing an App for keeping scores, on some achievements/tasks set so self, on a regular basis. That became PDST :)

Features
Create/edit tasks
Enter/update a score for how you fulfilled/achieved that task during the last day/week/hour. The score will be averaged of the last week/month/day (24 h).
Delete a score
Delete a task and it's scores

Planned Features
Translation into Dutch, other languages on request (and/or when a translator volunteers)
iOS release
Windows UWP release (Windows 10 Desktop and Mobile)
On demand: Windows Phone 8.x

Screenshots
Main screen: with some (hand entered) tasks:

After adding a Task, no score set yet:

Short-pressing a task shows the Score screen:

Select the score for a list of available values (0-10):

Select a value:
PDST-task-score-2.png
The OK button stores the value.

Long-pressing a task shows a Delete / Change menu for that task:
PDST-main-longpress.png

Confirm or cancel the delete, also all Scores for that task will be deleted!

When editing a Score, the delete button removes that Score from the database:

Usage
Installation
According to the platform standards,
On Android PDST can be installed from here when the Unknown Sources option is enabled in the Security section:
Android-Unknown-sources.png

Using the Application
Select Interval 1 (1 day), 2 (1 week) or 3 (1 hour) for a task, other values not supported yet, a better UI will be in the next version.

Uninstallation
According to the platform standards.

Tips
Any tips for using it?

Known Issues
This is early-beta-quality software and my first actual mobile app, so please bear with me...
Sometimes the average calculation doesn't seem to work as expected, working on that for the next release

I'm suggesting that the export feature should add the quotes when writing the csv export, not that the list should be edited.

In those cases the names/titles with a comma (aka the separator character) should be quoted (") and Excel (or any csv import) will handle it properly.

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: NANY 2017: Progress Bars of Life Android
« Last post by Ath on December 25, 2016, 03:14 AM »
Just for fun I added a new item to the displayed category, and it showed up immediately in the widget. After deleting it from the list, again it was gone immediately.
Must be something like an initialization glitch, I think I first deleted all test-items, then created the widget, not selecting a category because no items yet, then created a new list, and tried to set that category to display in the widget: no go.

I changed the category several times, adding a new one for the list I created, but even that one wouldn't show, and neither All would. Recreating the widget is the only way I could get the list to show.

Have been running pbol-android since day one.
Today I installed it on my new tablet, but I hadn't set up the list of items yet when I created the homescreen-widget. Later I created a list and tried to make that visible in the widget, but that wouldn't work. I had to remove the widget and re-create it to get the list visible. I assume that's a bug?
847
It would block the ability to remove removable media...
848
I figured out what the problem was. This app does not like to be installed to a removable card. As soon as I moved it to the internal storage, the widget option came back.
Widgets can't be used when the application is installed on non-internal storage.
That is a known 'feature'/issue of Android since 2.2 or maybe even from the get-go.
849
Just installed the latest on my Nexus 5 with Android 6.0.1, and placed a widget on my homescreen without a hitch
And the same for Android 4.2 on my Samsung Tab 2.
