No, this was not sort of a mini-review.

It's a pretty good substitute though  :D  Thanks

« Last post by Perry Mowbray on December 17, 2009, 05:47 PM »
I may not be a typical user, but i never use due dates on a todo list -- i use a todo list more for things that i want to get through as soon as possible.
I do like checkboxes though, because it's useful to see what you've done and how much you've accomplished, at least until you are ready to remove it completely after some time.
So i guess for me i like the idea of multiple checklists, where i can check each item off a list until that list is complete, and then file that list away into storage.

Did you see this: http://www.labnol.or...-lists-online/11619/ Seems to be the best of both worlds?

Tagging? Categories? What for?
-fenixproductions (December 17, 2009, 04:04 PM)

  • Christmas card list
  • Friends
  • Work related

So how would your idea differ from defining "Tags" field as string, choosing it in list's filter dropdown and typing wanted phrase in TextBox?
How would it differ from extended mode where an option to "treat spaces as separators" exists?

It is still just an idea but this is how I want it to be in the future.
-fenixproductions (December 17, 2009, 04:04 PM)

Maybe not at all  :D

But the idea of a Tag or a Category is a little specific, like multiple tags per record. Like being able to add to existing tags from a dynamic dropdown. Then when filtering having the ability to include any or all matches, etc.

Tag clouds are not just eye candy but can be an efficient way to view and work with your data.

As superboyac says, this is not a trivial task, so thanks for even looking at it!

I thought I'd add my comments...

--Be able to insert email addresses (or other info...telephone #, street address, etc.) wherever the cursor is in whatever program.  This is similar to one of those clipboard managers that can insert text to wherever the cursor, except in this case, it only applies to addresses.  But the program should be called up and used in a similar manner
-superboyac

That one may be tricky but added to ToDo list of course.
-fenixproductions (December 15, 2009, 04:08 PM)

I'd go for Drag & Drop as an easy way of filling a form from data on some other form

--The address details for each entry should be fully customizable as far as what fields go in.  (first name, last name, street address, etc., as well as the ability for custom fields of course).
-superboyac

I think that per contact fields would confuse too much. There will be some customization for fields types but each contact will have the same fields available. Although I am planning to give an option to hide empty fields in view mode. In edit - all will be shown.
-fenixproductions (December 15, 2009, 04:08 PM)

That's actually something that bugs me with OC: you have to add individual fields each time. They attempt to get around it by having contacts start with certain fields and you can add fields in groups.

I think groups are a good idea.

--There should be a live search-as-you-type filter to quickly select the address you want.  And you should be able to search ALL fields, not just the name or something.  This is almost identical to the program PowerMarks, which is a bookmark manager that does exactly what I'm saying here.  In fact, it's so similar that I asked the author of that program to consider making this software, but I don't think he was interested.
-superboyac

That was one of the very first requirements which crossed my mind.
-fenixproductions (December 15, 2009, 04:08 PM)

Not sure how you're thinking of implementing, but inline search qualifiers are really powerful: like how Google does search, intitle, etc.

--There should be a fairly complex way to share fields of information between different entries.  For example, let's say you have an entry for a husband and a wife.  They have different first names, but same last names, same address, different email addresses, different cell phone numbers.  So there should be some way to link the common information together and keep the other information separate.  And by "link" I really mean link, not just copy the same field.
-superboyac

Perry already mentioned linking. The way I see it working is to have the possibility to link fields / fields groups to other entries. Changing original entry will change the rest of contacts which rely on some properties of that one. Other idea was too have "static contacts/fields" which would not be normally visible on contacts list but could be referenced to.
-fenixproductions (December 15, 2009, 04:08 PM)

To be honest, I mentioned relationships  ;)  I'd like to be able to see all the contacts who live at an address type thing.

But I like the linking idea.

Can I also mention tagging? or categories for contacts.

Thanks

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / NANY 2010 - Update December 17th
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on December 16, 2009, 09:11 PM »
The NANY Challenge is an annual Challenge at DonationCoder where coders of all levels are challenged to pledge a New Application for the New Year and release it on January 1, 2010.

The NANY 2010 Challenge is generating a lot of interest again this year: so far we've had:

CodySwitch.png

There's still time to join the NANY celebration! The idea is simple, and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of their skill level.  There are no winners, but everyone gets a prize -- a very handsome DonationCoder mug commemorating the event. If you know any coders, please give them a nudge and ask them to come by and give us a little bit of their time.  We know sometimes it's hard for coders to come up with good ideas, so we started a special thread just for people to post project ideas for others to consider working on; don't be shy posting your ideas.  And if you're a programmer, why not stop by the Pledge thread now and pledge to release something new by January 1 2010.  Help us make it something special -- we promise to make it fun!

Here's the next update on Twiggles progress with his NANY 2010 entry: Twigatelle. Thanks to Head in the Clouds for allowing us this view into the whole NANY process!

BlitzType 0.9
BlitzType is utility that helps to reduce repetitive typing, speed up typing and increase productivity in work that involves typing, writing and coding, etc. It does so by autocompleting frequently typed words and phrases or expand abbreviations into complete form for the user. BlitzType learns and saves repeated phrases as the user types. When the user is about to type a same phrase again, he/she can rely on BlitzType to autocomplete the phrase or expand the abbreviation for him/her.

Multiboot ISO Maker Alpha 7
Multiboot ISO Maker is an unrestrained graphical front end for mkisofs for Windows and a multiboot ISO creator. It supports all mkisofs options and it is aimed at people who know what mkisofs is and what is not. It is unrestrained because it supports all mkisofs options without any limits and you are not restrained to the bundled version of mkisofs. Multiboot ISO Maker works by placing all mkisofs options in a check list. You can activate and deactivate any mkisofs option by clicking on the item in the list.

Countdown 0.0.25
Simple, unobtrusive countdown app which counts down to a user-selectable date.  Resizable and movable, so it can sit anywhere on your desktop.  Countdown options range from DD:HH:MM:SS to just DD, and everything in-between.
Created because I love counting down to dates and times, and I'd like to have a small app sitting on my desktop doing exactly that.
Plus, it has cool red led graphics!

Welcome to the NANY Event Marcel!

You'll find a lot of comment here about note takers and todo lists (take a look around), but to answer your questions...

PS I am aware that updates of existing programs are not allowed in NANY 2010, but entering the NANY is not my aim. My aim WAS to provide a lowpriced ToDo tool and see what happened. My aim IS NOW to re-cycle my efforts and create a FREE ToDo application and see how many people would like to use it, if it is freeware. My guess is that it may very well turn out to be a newly written program (which could be allowed to the NANY) but I will leave that decision to DonationCoder. But at the very least, the program could become a freeware program.

You're right that updates don't qualify, but rewrites do. How much recycling is involved in a rewrite, I think, is not able to be specified. It's probably got more to do with your intention. Certainly when you submit a NANY and our users get hold of it you'll get lots of ideas and requests for the development of your app.

It would be an ambitious undertaking to rewrite your app in a couple of weeks though?  :-\  Personally, I'd be more than happy to have a pledge of the rewrite of Much2Do

Everyone will have their own ideas, which may be better canvassed in a specific thread, but here are mine:
I am particularly interested in feedback concerning these questions:
- Most ToDo programs have checkboxes, do you really need them in a ToDolist?
(I feel that if the item is done it should be removed, so why a checkbox)

If it's two separate events, sure: it's not efficient; but if a checkbox set's the done date as today, and the done date (maybe not today) set's the check box, they're not entirely separate (The checkbox providing a good visual clue and shortcut).

- How could the planning part of my desktop application be improved?

Not played with it, but again, probably a question for a separate thread

- Would you like to have the day planning available in the mobile app as well?

I don't have a mobile to run the app on...

- I plan 100% digital but I stil prefer to print the items for Today on paper,
but being green means you should not print anything. Any suggestions?

Some sort of export that can be viewed in various (independent) ways? Desktop, web, etc.

*) Or do you want to see empty forms?
-fenixproductions (December 14, 2009, 02:49 PM)

Well, that would fit in with some of the other dreadful teases that have been posted  ;D  But seriously, I think that would be great fun and well within the fun loving spirit of NANY!

I think there is such a need for this type of software that you'll get a lot of support here. I think everyone who has ever tinkered with code will have started an Address Book programme, simply because what's available doesn't meet their needs. So I think what that is saying is that it needs to be flexible and extensible.

There is 2.5 weeks to go, after all!  ;)

STOP PRESS: Pledge Deadline extended to December 18th

Due to popular demand we've extended the Pledge Deadline by a week to December 18th. There's still time to make your pledge in the NANY 2010 Pledge to Participate Here thread and get in on the fun!

N.A.N.Y. is the annual event on DonationCoder.com is where we invite, cajole, blackmail, bribe and just generally beg all of the programmers who pass through the site to pledge to release some new piece of free software on January 1st. The idea is simple, and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of their skill level.  There are no winners, but everyone gets a prize -- a very handsome DonationCoder mug commemorating the event.

Twigatelle Update
Each year we focus on Teasers and Entries that are being developed through December; this year we have a very special opportunity to journey with one of DonationCoder's intrepid coders, Twiggles, who is developing Twigatelle for N.A.N.Y 2010. Thanks to Head in the Clouds for allowing us this view into the whole NANY process!

HITC - FollowTheYellowBrickCode.png

Featured Teasers
DupFind: A simple, graphical application that scans a directory tree and reports any duplicate files found. OS's supported: Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, MacOS/X (and possibly others like OpenSolaris)
DupFind.png

Traitor: Traktor doesn't have a sampler. A DJ set is not complete without the annoying siren. Teddy doesn't do MIDI nor ASIO. You figure it out.
Traitor.png

FARR Plugin ProcessInfo: I'm a sysadmin by trade, and I frequently need to get quick information about processes running on a machine (either my own or a remote PC).  I also frequently need to know what files the process is actually using at any given moment.  And I don't necessarily want to have to access the machine directly to get that information. While there are tools already available that give me that information, none of them are particularly fast about giving it to me, and none of the are as intutive as a FARR alias/plugin could be.  So I wrote this to be the fast, simple tool that I as an admin need to get information quickly.
ProcessInfo.png

Recent Releases
ClipTrap: ClipTrap watches the clipboard and keeps track of copied text in its window.  I initially wrote it for my workplace where we use terminal emulators (SecureCRT, PuTTY, etc.) constantly and often need to capture several successive bits of output from various routers, switches, and other devices on the network.  I fleshed it out and prettied it up for NANY 2010.  I use this in conjunction with ArsClip, a fantastic clipboard caching tool.
ClipTrap.png

Page Countster: The company I work for re-manufactures laser printer toner cartridges as a primary (cost center) product. We needed a way to quickly find out how many printers were on a customers network, what model they were, their page counts, serial numbers, toner levels & etc. The application had to be small, portable, fast, & simple enough for the sales staff to operate...

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / NANY 2010 - Press
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on December 13, 2009, 06:30 AM »
This thread is to keep track of places where NANY 2010 is mentioned.

To quote mouser's comment from last year (it's still relevant):
I feel like i should make a post mentioning why i think it's relevant and fun to have a thread about any "press" or mentions of the NANY 2009 programs, because if i was a new person to the site i might feel like it was a bit annoying or self-promoting to see a post like this.

Unlike a big company with advertising and marketing money -- the only way people find out about DC and the stuff that goes on here is when other sites notice or when friends tell friends about us.

As a programmer participant in the NANY event, part of the fun is the enjoyment that one receives from other people trying and liking your software.

I always feel nervous when we do something like this that it will be like a tree falling in the woods and no one noticing.. and while programming is it's own reward -- i think it's so nice when everyone involved can also get the enjoyment that comes when new people and new personalities discover the programs and enjoy them.  (it's also very nice and fun for the site in general to have new people discovering the site, especially when there introduction to the site is something as purely a celebration of software as an event like this is).

So anyway, that's why i think it's so cool when i see a program that was part of the NANY event written up, i think to myself how cool it is that someone took notice of the work that this coder put into their program, and how much more rewarding it may be to the coder to see their good work acknowledged.

Please add a link when you find it!

NANY 2010 Update
nany-2010-small.png

This year marks the 4th annual NANY Challenge: The NANY 2010 Challenge!

The aim of the NANY Challenge is to release a new programme, utility, game, etc on January 1st; you first have to have pledged your commitment to release the application in the Pledge Thread: Read the full instructions if you're interested in participating: we're always happy to meet like-minded coders who are keen to celebrate and have fun with new Freeware / Donationware. There's also an Idea Thread and Offers of Assistance to help you with your entry.

The NANY event is a community celebration, not a competition and therefore there can be no winner; apart from the obvious rewards for the software using community, everyone who participates in NANY, either as a software author or volunteer, will receive a stunning DonationCoder mug or T-Shirt with a brand new and very collectible NANY 2010 image designed by the artist Nick Pearson (See NANY 2010 Prize Graphics).

Look for Web Badges that'll be appearing across the internet that mark applications as Pledges or Entries in this Year's NANY:

This thread will include regular updates that will focus on the various entries (in no particular order), but first some interesting details about this year's Challenge.

NANY 2010 Challenge Details (as of December 31th)
  • 27 Pledges
  • 7 Teasers
  • 15 Entries

Graph 2009-12-31.png

One of the wonderful surprises of each NANY is the wide variety of entries, and this year is no different, though there is (understandably) a strong bias towards Windows:
  • 16 Windows Based
  • 2 Interpreted (Python, Java)
  • 3 Web Based

Teasers / Releases

Congratulations to all our Coders!

« Last post by Perry Mowbray on December 10, 2009, 09:34 PM »
Gobbledegook started as a bit of fun between a colleague when she sent me an email with more than a few typos.

I'd heard about the fact that our brains read the first and last letter of words and guess the rest, so I wrote this very quick script that allows me to email funny messages back (that are mostly readable).

Have fun, this is a very quick rewrite (a couple of hours the other night) of my original (in AutoIt3) because I couldn't find it anymore  ;). Hence why it's Mini NANY.

Installation
If you have AutoHotKey installed, download * Gobbledegook.zip (2.61 kB - downloaded 1049 times.) and unzip it somewhere and run Gobbledegook.ahk
If you do not have AutoHotKey installed, download * Gobbledegook.exe (200.48 kB - downloaded 3030 times.) and run it

Use
After running either the ahk script or the exe, enter the words to be modified and press return:

The modified words will be displayed in the history window:

This Thread can be used to submit your Mini NANY. Mini NANYs were announced here: https://www.donation....msg187366#msg187366 You can also submit your Mini NANY in it's own thread if you like  ;)

A Mini NANY does not come under the same stringent rules that a normal NANY does, and could include:
  • A Pledge / Release that the developer thinks is not substantial enough to be a Normal NANY (It might be a very simple script that's incredibly useful).
  • A Pledge / Release that will not be completed (Maybe a partner could be found?).
  • A Pledge / Release that does not quite fit a Normal NANY.

The main aim of the Mini NANY is to enable everyone to participate... so now there is no excuse (even if you are time poor) not to get involved and join the fun!

To submit a Mini NANY in this Thread, simply:
  • Add a new reply and change the title to your Mini NANY (eg Mini NANY 2010: Working Title)
  • Attach the file or link to your reply
