... I removed Windows Desktop Search as soon as I realized that it would not let me alter any of its behavior. MS must have built in a "strong man" feature to it. I couldn't find a way to even touch its priority. ..

Hmmm; this is a little confusing to me. Windows Desktop Search 3.0's priority should be easy to temper with, I would expect. Was it version 3.0?

Will you look into which service processes are still running and tell if SearchIndexer.exe (in /system32) is one of them, please?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Open once a day between A and B o'clock only
« Last post by Curt on May 28, 2007, 10:38 AM »
I seem to keep forgetting this studytool of mine and am getting way behind schedule, so I am in need of a little thingy that will open the program once a day, and this one time only, and only between A and B o'clock (preferable 24 hours over AM/PM) - even if I reboot the PC several times during this periode. It is okay for the program to be placed in Start [Edit: Yes of course it is okay; it is necessary, isn't it].

Can this be done?  :tellme:

I have ToDo lists and RSS and calendar and.., but I don't look at them!

Some ten days ago Giveawayoftheday was offering the $30 WireKeys, but somehow I missed it. Today I wrote the author and he gave me a copy for free! Very nice touch :-)

I looked at the plugins' page and ..

I have only had this new program installed for a day, but two features I have come to like at once you can see here:

Have the Start button display free RAM or CPU, and give any taskbar button you point at a close button.

Are these guys really imployed at Microsoft? What a refined sense of humor; maybe all hope is not yet lost. Watch this video, it is hilarious!

Doing what is right is not just a matter of social intelligence. There is more to it. From Adam's time and until Judgement Day there were and will always be people attracted to evil, seing good as bad and bad as good. I mean; they crucified Jesus, didn't they. What can you expect? Some will think software pirates are heroes. 2twocents.gif

J-Mac; we forgot to also make the obvious point, didn't we.
When you raise the dragon's priority, using Process Tamer, you should of course also lower Windows Desktop Search's priority to below normal or even idle.

 :tellme:
6957
I have TweakUI with the same setting, but I am not too sure it will change anything but which window is getting the focus.

---

By the way:

Important:

• If you installed PowerToys prior to April 23, 2002, you must uninstall your old PowerToys before installing the versions available here.

• PowerToys only work with U.S. English regional settings.
-Microsoft

From experience I know that some PowerToys actually work with other languages as well, but not all.
6958
That is, the priority of the window/app that I want in focus, correct?

BTW, I just changed a few settings in Mouser's Process Tamer that might help, too.  Guess I'll see.

Thanks.

That was excatly what I was thinking about:
Use ProcessTamer to set new Priority for the Dragon: Force RealTime

- assuming the Dragon is only open when in use; otherwise it will eat the CPU from other apps.

Regarding my beloved Volumouse:

Volumouse v1.31 incompatibility with Windows Vista:

Starting from Windows Vista, Microsoft changed the way that applications control the sound volume. When an application running in Vista changes the sound volume, it doesn't affect the master volume of the entire system anymore. Instead, it only affects the volume for the running application.

Unfortunately, this new "feature" creates huge compatibility problems to all applications and utilities that changes the sound volume of the entire system. Volumouse is also affacted by this change - Instead of changing the volume of the entire system as expected, it only changes the sound volume of Volumouse itself (volumouse.exe). This means that under Vista, Volmouse utility is useless...

Microsoft also released a new set of programming interfaces for controling the master volume in Vista. However, merging the new programming interfaces into Volumouse is a big headache, and requires both development efforts and new equipment for running Vista.

Due to all these problems, a stable version of Volumouse that works with Vista won't be available until the 3rd quarter of 2007.

First beta version of Volumouse that works under Vista is now available from this page

For now, if you still want to work with Volumouse 1.31 under Vista, you can set the Compatibility mode to XP SP2: Right-lick on the volumouse program icon, choose "Properties", click the "Compatibility" tab, enable the compatibility mode, and then choose Windows XP SP2 from the combo-box.

A hole lot easier just to raise the Priority to RealTime / 24.

Version 4 of the famous irfanview (donationware) is out!

Some ten days ago Giveawayoftheday was offering the $30 WireKeys, but somehow I missed it. Today I wrote the author and he gave me a copy for free! Very nice touch :-)

I looked at the plugins' page and found this macro for IrfanView:

  • "Irfan view" automatic crop tool:
  • Crop and save a sequence of images in a batch, one by one. Uses IrfanView's built-in keys to perform crop, save, and next image operations in sequence.

If you think $30 is too much, well, being at DonationCoder you might as well author a little plugin or macro yourself and have the program for free. I know I would like to remote control Media Player Classic...   ;)

To developers:

If you're missing some specific function and know how to implement it by yourself, you can write your own plugin. Creating WireKeys plugins is very simple, even for novice programmers. Take some time to read over the notes in the plugin's header file, look into and grab sample plugins source code, and you can have your first plugin up and running withing just a few minutes. Send us new plugins by email, and we will post it here. Every plugin author will be given a free registration key to WireKeys. If you have any questions, you can post them in our support forum.

Remember that plugins will not work without WireKeys itself. Unregistered version of WireKeys will run plugins only during the 14 days trial period, after which they all will be disabled.

List of available sources of the plugins.

95% CPU usage I say, for 1½ hour, and only 4 tracks were analyzed, leaving 5000 tracks - making it several days or weeks. Mind you, I'm talking about the > Library > Start Analysis. That analyze ate all my CPU.

But of course, my copy of the free MusicIP Mixer version could be a mismatch for my setup?

And also, one must remember first to disable the screensaver.
6963
And with, say, 25 GB audio files, this app's analyze will take 95% CPU for how may days?

...  All I asked was that people who downloaded the software send me a short e-mail saying what they liked or didn't like about it... or even just their location if they wanted to.  I just wanted to get some feedback and metrics.

I can afford email, though...and encouraging words, and I know how much they are worth. Their value is more than the average person thinks.  ;)

Thanks for telling this! I would often look at that feedback button and think Why should I take their time telling what they already know? / or whatever reason kept me from responding.

Now I will write every small-app's author  :D

.. look at FAROO ( http://www.faroo.com ), ...

I have never before seen this error message. Why the 406? Is it merely because the browser didn't understand if I should be directed to the German or to the English page? The two links worked fine.

"OE is their freebie e-mail client while Outlook is their fully-featured, big bucks e-mail client".

And it is strange that MS gave these two apps two almost identical names, when they are so different from each other. "Verily, verily, I say; let not your right hand know what your left is doing" - the Bible says about giving money-gifts to the church. Maybe MS got the occasion wrong.

But it would have been obvious for MS to make one the cheaper version of the other. Would have. But why say obvious and Microsoft in one and same sentence..

... OE is M$'s freebie e-mail client and Outlook is their full-blown and pricey version; ...

- or is it?

SEVEN MYTHS ABOUT OUTLOOK

2'nd Myth: Outlook is the "full version" of the free Outlook Express

Not in a million years. Outlook was developed by the Office program group as a Personal Information Manager (PIM) and e-mail program and positioned as the Exchange client to replace Schedule+ and the original Exchange client. Outlook Express was developed by the Internet Explorer group to provide simple mail and news handling for Windows users.

The feature sets in each program are targeted to the expected the user base: Outlook is a business e-mail client while Outlook Express is for home users. As a result, Outlook does some things better than OE, like calendaring, contacts, mail merge, and tasks; while OE has inline image display and newsgroups and is less complicated to use.

See http://www.slipstick...m/outlook/olexpr.htm and http://support.micro...oft.com/?kbid=257824 for more information on the differences between Outlook and Outlook Express.

This is even better than a "PerfectDisk only" deal:

... requests from customers who wanted both the simplicity of the PD Rx Suite and power features of PD 8 Pro. The new PD 8 Pro/PD Rx Combo Pack is now available from our download store and provides 1 PC license of each for only $49.99 ($39.99 if code PDRX20 is used)

This post because I never heard of this app until today, when the site was recommended in general by our friend Gizmo:

PictureResizer

PictureResizer is a small and very easy to use application for fast image resizements. It allows to resize complete folder contents regarding a fixed width. If necessary, new created pictures can be saved with a prefix or into a new created, specific folder. PictureResizer is not a tool to come over to the needs of professial photographers, but it's helpful resizing images for internet or email utilisation.

I guess the hole situation is a matter of being aware and care - or not - of the consequenses of your actions. And as more and more people becomes psychopaths, I imagine the problem will just grow and grow. As for the young people; I think they don't think... Remembering my own youth, I really think I too acted like a psycho. Being aware AND care about the consequesense of your actions may be how to spot if you a mature person. I know this to be the Christian attitude: If you wanna call yourself a mature Christian, then you do care!
6972
With the help from Darwin I have solved the problem. My fault was that I only looked in Outlook for Import to Outlook (there is no such) - but I should have looked in Outlook Express > Files > for Export from Outlook Express to Outlook.

Thanks for the PM, Darwin

Actually, I do need help again (and again and..).

This time it is the task:
How To Import Messages from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook 2003, XP Home?

I will hate to send them to myself and have all these mails saying the wrong "From.."

It is just too lousy that there is no standard button in Outlook, "Import from OE"
- the question must have beeen asked millions of times before.

Is this within your capabilities?
 :tellme:
6974
The other solution is to simply navigate to the IExplorer.exe or FireFox.exe executable files in the Program Files folder and then Outlook will remember next time again.
-Carol Haynes (May 21, 2007, 08:55 AM)

I did navigate Outlook to Maxthon, but then everything went totally wrong.
6975
Wow; you guys really gave me something to think about before I could act!  icon_mrgreen.gif
Thanks for all of your help !

Hmm, perhaps "find kaedeoversigt" means "find link browser" in English?

Yes; Find link browser it is.

I read almost all of your links and decided to follow the first link from Wordzilla: tech-archive.net  ;)

It was not as easy as implied in the article! In the end I had to uninstall my Internet browser and clean the registry, but then everytthing was back to normal - and I could reinstall the browser.

Well, what browser is it then?

3. Set the default browser to your favorite browser, I'll bet it's not IE  ;D

IE is pretty close in fact. VERY close indeed  ;)

For many years I was using Internet Explorer 6 and was happy with it. As I became more and more aware of the number of different browsers one can find, I took the chance to try another. And then another. And several others. I will have to say that the number of addons you can have for Firefox is impressive, and they were the very reason I installed that browser. I still like my Firefox (FF) a lot - but I hardly use it anymore. The reason for this is Maxthon (Max). I tried Max a couple of years ago, but didn't like it then. But a week ago I installed it again and this time I am keeping it. This is IMO maybe The Best Internet Browser you can have! I know some will hate my guts for saying this because Max is based on IE which comes from Microsoft, and in some circles it is politically correct / standard procedure to low, reject or even hate Microsoft. But anyway; Maxthon is what IE should have been!

There are a lot of addons for the Max, but of course not the same number as FF. Being used to FF there are still a few features missing in Max, but at least everything in IE is also to be found in Max, and many features from FF addons are being "translated" to Max, so it keeps getting better and better. And very soon Maxthon will update from version 1.5 to 2.0. The Beta version is ready for download.
