Found Deals and Discounts / Trine on Steam for $5.
« Last post by Deozaan on February 10, 2010, 10:44 PM »
There's no Steam news item announcing this 75% off sale for Trine and no indication as to when this sale ends. So I'm not sure when the special started or when it will be over.

Trine is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. Set in a world of great castles and strange machinery, three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil…

The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities help the player battle an army of undead and defeat hazardous contraptions. The player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle: The Wizard is able to summon objects to help solve puzzles and create new ways to overcome obstacles, the Thief uses her agility and dead-on accuracy to swiftly surprise the monsters, and the Knight unleashes mayhem and physical destruction wherever he goes.

Lashiec says Trine would go in his Best Games of 2009 List even after only having played the demo.

Trine on Steam also has Steam Cloud support, meaning your save data is saved in the Cloud and available at any PC you log into your Steam account from.

General Software Discussion / Re: on OS updates and breakage
« Last post by Deozaan on February 06, 2010, 06:53 PM »
I updated Ubuntu recently and it broke the bootloader or something. When I try to boot into it it says I need to load the kernel first. I thought I was trying to load the kernel by telling my machine to boot into Ubuntu?

So I erased it all and did a fresh install and then downloaded updates again and it still won't let me boot into the latest Ubuntu kernel. Not even for recovery mode.

I'm not very experienced with linux, but my little experience with Ubuntu leads me to agree with you.

I use Google Chrome's new tab page as my "start" page. And finally I started using bookmarks again because of Chrome for two reasons:

1. My bookmarks are synchronized to all Chrome browsers.
2. I have it set up so that the bookmark bar only shows up on the new tab page.

I still wonder if the solution is to get the junction directory to recognize the change.  Do you think that AHK could look at the file to see when the timestamp changes, then touch the file again through the junction?

I'm not sure what that means, to be honest.

I thought Diablo II only updated (saved) character data every few minutes anyway. Sometimes I've brought up task manager and chose "End Task" to quit without it saving changes.

I've definitely gone longer than 1 or 2 seconds, which is how often D2 is freezing up.

Though I suppose it could be the other files D2 creates, relating to the maps.

I got some new bonus called a switcheroo, but I have no idea what it did :).

I've never gotten it or seen it, but my guess is that it switches the pegs around. Or in other words, red pegs are switched with some blue pegs. So now you have to aim at different places.

Btw, be VERY careful when dealing with junctions in standard Explorer - deleting a junction won't just delete the junction, but also the folder it points to!

Is that true for sure. I use junctions quite a bit created through Link Shell Extension and deleting them (i.e. NOT using the added 'Delete junction' menu entry) never deleted the source folder. However not having used them without the extension installed perhaps that behaviour differs.

When I delete a Junction folder, it doesn't delete the folder in the other location, but it does delete all the contents of the folder.

Maybe you can do it in reverse.  Create the actual directory as your dropbox directory, then create a junction for diablo 2 to point to it?

That worked! But now the game freezes up momentarily every second or two. Bummer.

the post here by justice seems to indicate that it is possible to do that with Dropbox.

That's the extension I used to create the junction.

I wonder if it's a Windows 7 or 64-bit issue...

Living Room / Re: HTML...In Britsh?

Anybody else want to be able to code HTML in BRITISH?

I'm now bored of having to mis-spell words like 'colour' <---- even as i type, my browser is telling me i have mis-spelled that

<sarcastic ethnocentrism>

Oh but you have misspelled "color." You've got an extra "u" in there! You just need to learn how to spell English words the correct way and all your HTML problems will vanish like magic!

</sarcastic ethnocentrism>

Actually when I was in my first few years of grade school, I thought I was so smart and as a result on my spelling tests I'd add an extra "u" in words as is appropriate for British spelling. Naturally the teacher marked them wrong but when I protested she gave me full credit.

I guess I was kind of a smart aleck. (Maybe I still am...) :o

General Software Discussion / Re: Folder Junctions and SymLinks for Dropbox
« Last post by Deozaan on February 03, 2010, 05:21 AM »
I just tested out using Junctions to point "My Dropbox\Games\Diablo II\save" to "Games\Diablo II\save" and it appears to be working properly as far as the fact that it's the same folder and same files, unfortunately it doesn't work at all with regard to Dropbox recognizing the files are changing and synchronizing to the cloud or to other computers.

Has anyone else successfully gotten something like this to work with Dropbox?

I have to admit that it takes a lot of time to educate the whole world! ;D

Even that article isn't too reassuring. Budget 10% of your system money for a cable? So if I buy a $4,000 HDTV I'm supposed to budget $400 for the HDMI cable?

I'd rather stick to MonoPrice. A $5 HDMI cable suits me just fine. Unless I can get it for less. (c;

For those interested in the dubbing-as-humor genre, Woody Allen was ahead of his time in 1966 when he made an entire comedy movie called "What's Up Tiger Lilly" by dubbing a japanese movie.  I saw it as a kid and found it profoundly unfunny -- so i can't vouch for it.

My friends and I did a little "Mystery Science Theater 3000" of our own a couple years back. One of my friends, who was my room-mate at the time, was really into older foreign martial arts films. I remember him renting one movie that none of us had ever seen before, which only had subtitles (it wasn't dubbed). We didn't pay much attention to the subtitles, and just made stuff up as the movie went along.

I always figured that the guys at MST3000 would watch a movie repeatedly to come up with their jokes, so I was really surprised at how well it all worked, making fun of it spontaneously, ad-libbing the dialog when their mouths moved.

I don't even remember what the movie was about, but I do remember several of the things we joked that it was about.

Another example is that I keep my documents and other profile information on my D drive, but Windows won't let me remove the C:\Users\ directory, all the real data is in D:\Users\
To do this, you'd have to boot from BartPE or similar, move the folder to the destination, then create the junction. I'm not sure it's a good idea trying to move C:\Users this way, though.

Hmm... It's something to think about. Thanks for the help!

If I were to go for this, I'd probably just buy a license to the ReBit software ($49 for a single computer, $79 for multiple PC license).

The 250GB or 500GB SeaGate drive isn't going to be able to do a full backup/restore of my PC, which has over 1TB of storage inside.

Too bad the design is so ugly; I'd prefer something square & stackable, preferably black as well - form factor being more important than color, though.

Buying just the software would solve that problem as well.

One of the problems I'm having is that I install my programs on a drive other than C, and I told Windows to use my A drive instead for Program Files, but when programs install using the default information, they install to Program Files on C, but the shortcuts are made pointing to A, so I get a lot of broken shortcuts and things.

I'm trying to create a SymLink now, but it won't let me create one for a directory that already exists.

Another example is that I keep my documents and other profile information on my D drive, but Windows won't let me remove the C:\Users\ directory, all the real data is in D:\Users\

But I can't create a SymLink/Junction because C:\Users already exists. Any tips on getting this to work?

Aha! Thanks for the info!

A quick Google of SymLinks and NTFS Junctions reveals the following information:

How-To Geek explains: Using SymLinks in Windows Vista (with commandline ... commands).
Microsoft explains: How to create and manipulate NTFS Junction points (with commandline tools).

From the first link it appears as though using SymLinks for a directory actually creates a Junction.

General Software Discussion / "Pointer" Directories in Windows
« Last post by Deozaan on February 02, 2010, 09:05 PM »
So I've really been interested lately in something that has been mentioned a few times on these forums. I don't know what they're called, but basically you can create a "pointer directory" that doesn't really exist, but just points to another directory located somewhere else in your computer.

This way you can have something like:

C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Dropbox\Games\Diablo II\Saves\

Which really puts all the files in:

D:\Games\Diablo II\Saves\

As you can see from the example, one of the purposes I have for this is to back up/synchronize files from places that don't tidily fit into the normal DropBox folder.

Any help on what these "pointer directories" are and how to make them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
