N.A.N.Y. 2020 / Re: NANY 2020 Release - Android App - DiscussionList
« Last post by tomos on October 20, 2019, 12:29 PM »
Sorry I missed that 'random' option -- very nice

Would either of these be possible (in order of importance):

  • an indication that there is a note related to current item
  • a method of easily accessing/reading note/s related to the question (edit is an option here)

No apology needed, the app is out there for people to use and test, I'm just craving some encouragement :)
I'm probably not the best tester having no significant other, but am really enjoying asking myself the questions -- in slideview.
I dont think it can ask random questions? That could be helpful.

Could also be used like your popup quotes (or what do you think?), could the lists for that be used here?

PS you could add the beta link to the OP, make it easier to find, on a phone at any rate :-[

I'm still not keen on using Chrome (Google)
AFAIK there's various Chromium based alternative that don't have the Google connection where the extension would probably work. I was going to recommend SRWare Ironw which I used use, but after reading the criticism there... maybe look for another one.

Portable Software better *not* kept in either of the program folders. It doesn't have write permission there so acts like an installed app, creating ini files etc elsewhere.

Android Apps / Re: Re-usable ToDo lists (possibly using *Checklist DC*?)

EPIM seems to only do two levels of hierarchy.
On a quick test, Android EPIM can do at least four levels of Tasks below he base level.  I'm using a registered copy of PC-EPIM - don't know if that makes a difference.  I don't remember paying for a copy on Android.
finally got back to this -- yes, you're correct (can also be done on an unregistered copy). Will try it for a bit

Sounds a lot like Wallpaper Welder?
I don't think so -- that's a very specific action. I'm not sure how flexible irfanview is, but a panorama could be made from any size images

The Millennium Apps one doesn't in fact offer save-and-recall scenarios, but it allows you to set as many timers as you want, check off the tickboxes of the ones you currently need, and set them all off together.
this works very nicely, thanks!
It also allows very short alarms (e.g. a couple of seconds) which all I need if I by the phone.

I want an app for ToDo lists that would be re-used.

I'm not certain it would do what you want - but have you looked at the Android version of Essential PIM (EPIM)?  I think it's free.
thanks rj,
EPIM seems to only do two levels of hierarchy.
I'll give it a closer look tomorrow.

My favorite features for toolbar buttons and hotkeys are:

SpecialFX2: Patchtext/contents of selected region with background
SpecialFX2: Splice out strip defined by selection - Deluxe effects
Objects: Flatten all objects to background
These, plus:
  • Pixelate within selection
  • Reselect last selected area

Syncovery creates a hierarchy thus:
Items that start with the same word/letters e.g. "ProjectA xyz" will be shown as subitems of that prefix, here "ProjectA".
I have no idea how that is done...

The three levels would be really nice to have but I can probably live without.

Reset all visible items works well, thanks!

This possibly fairly obvious but one use case of this is when learning something, be it a workflow in a piece of software, or something practical, physical, or any situation where there are multiple steps and it's important to not forget any.

Other use case is simply where you want to work through a list and not have to think have I forgotten x or y.

Android Apps / Re-usable ToDo lists (possibly using *Checklist DC*?)
« Last post by tomos on September 28, 2019, 03:05 PM »
I want an app for ToDo lists that would be re-used. They are not recurring in the sense to be done every day or every tuesday -- I would use list xyz simply whenever I'm doing xyz again.

I think Checklist DC is suitable, but I would have a request or two.

Ideally the app would have three levels of hierarchy:
Grandparent
    Parent
        Child

(although I can work around this as suggested here -- include topic name ('Parent' above) in item text, e.g "Warmup - stretch#1").

Important would be quick and easy way of removing all checkmarks (in one group). I dont think this is easily possible in Checklist.

Wonderful would be a way of collapsing the individual nodes (is that the correct term) in the hierarchy (in Checklist, categories would be collapsable). Ideally all the hierarchy would be collapsed and one could expand whichever topic is relevant. This would make it much easier to scroll through all categories.
In Checklist one can scroll horizontally through the categories as tabs, this is quite effective. Maybe I'm just stuck in the traditional scroll down approach -- I do like the fact I would be able to see a lot more in one view.

In Checklist there's a lot of space used for the tabs and to display lists -- below is unusual in that there is often only one sub-item, this is where most space is wasted. I would love it to be more space conscious, more compact.

Screenshot_20190928-195758.png
  • In this example I had used abbreviations for the titles in the hopes the tabs would be narrower.
  • The write/edit icon could be a lot smaller imo
  • Theres a lot of space between each category

I'm open to other suggestions than Checklist (there's very few apps with 'recurring' in the title, I tried Recurlog, it's not bad but aimed at recurring in a once-a-week sense).

Mouser, what do you think of the suggestions for Checklist -- which might be possible?

I'll try and do a mockup of suggestions but cannot currently...
Not sure how helpful this is:

Screenshot - 2019-09-28 , 22_16_26_ver001.jpg

some nodes are collapsed.

Android Apps / Re: Other app ideas based on WhenLast code
« Last post by tomos on September 28, 2019, 12:56 PM »
Another wish probably not covered by WhenLast code: a decent cooking timer that allows you to save and recall named "scenarios," i.e. various times/titles for "put this veg on," "turn sausages," "put that veg on", "check pans," "Cooked!" etc., with a wide range of alarm sounds built in.  I use Big Clock, PocketDoan and Ramen on the Palm - sometimes all together...  I've seen plenty of Android timer apps, but none able to save a set of timers in a named group.
rj, this sounds very close to an idea that dc member ewemoa and i have been talking about.. groups of sequenced timers..
would love this idea.

T-Clock / Re: update ?
« Last post by tomos on September 16, 2019, 02:00 PM »
I guess there's three 'makers':
Kazubon:
The Original TClock written by Kazubon in the early 90's was a popular classic that was on the edge of extinction when Windows started going 64bit. ...I simply chose not to let that happen.
Stoic Joker quoted above, who brought it up to 2012
and
WhiteTigX who's currently maintaining/developing it.

You can donate via donationcoder to either of the two linked above.

InfoQube could be suitable. There's a portable version. Has recently gotten a hierarchical Tagging system:
http://infoqubeim.co...drupal5/?q=node/4328

Default view of entries is tree (they can include as much text as you want; can be formatted/highlighted) with doc pane for rtf / html content, images, pdf's etc.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Standalone screenshot window
« Last post by tomos on August 20, 2019, 12:25 AM »
i can almost do it, but it doesn't hide after clicking away, or standalone screenshot window doesn't resize to fit capture.
what do you mean by clicking away?

Here, I can select "After capture, save and show main window" (from the 'Capture bar' - presumably in options somewhere as well)
You can resize this window to roughly same size proportion of your fixed image size -- this will be remembered. Thumbnail panel and naming etc panel at the bottom can be hidden.

If I click on another window, the SC window will go to the back.
Is that any help? (or have I misunderstood?)

Living Room / Re: Buying a 2TB SSD to replace my 2TB HDD
« Last post by tomos on August 17, 2019, 04:31 AM »
The verdict elsewhere on dc seems to be Samsung again. Here a relatively recent post by 4wd:

For your OS get a decent SSD: Samsung 850/860 EVO, SanDisk Plus, or equivalent for a normal SATA SSD.

Samsung 970 NVMe M.2 for a more modern board with M.2 slots, (or use it with a PCIe adapter if you have PCIe v3), and your machine can boot off it.

128GB is more than enough for Windows 10 and quite a few programs, however, you may want to go bigger as SSDs generally work better if they have ~25-30% free space, (eg. don't get a 128GB SSD if your OS drive is currently using 100GB).

I'm wondering:
can the system access different parts of the SSD simultaneously?
This query related to OP planning C and D drives on one large SSD. I'm presuming here that D is data (@BGM?). With HDD's things work faster if these two are separated -- would this also be the case with SSD's?

My OS solution was a 2TB drive -- appropriate partition for OS, the rest gets used for backup of data (which is on a separate HD). The idea being backup activity is less than data activity.

Another thing that could be done is to use one disk for Page files *and* backup -- the backup partition probably wont be used that much, allowing the paging to work away. (Disadvantage could be the drive dies quicker from paging activity.)

I dont use a VPN as such, but Opera has it:
when I select 'Europe', I get the same offer as Flamerz (~$40 for pro lifetime version) in spite of me already being in Europe (Germany). Have been buying music instead this evening, and see I already get an upgrade to same for $10 more i.e. $50, so considering whether to go for it now...
