Do you feel the same about home surveillance of your own pad?

I know you asked 40... but I'll answer with a yes, for me personally.

You know the ghosts you see in the corner of your eyes.  And then you look that way, and they're gone.  It's the same with any surveillance.  This isn't to say that it's not useful.  But it's the same as with those ghosts- even with security.

Oh, I have blind spots... I need to see more.  Oh, was that something off in the woods?  I need to put something to be able to see out there.  Oh... what was that guy doing out this time of night by my mailbox... maybe a camera there...

...and if you resist, that siren call will still be in your head.

But what if something happens, and I don't do it?  How will I feel then?

Seems like paranoia waiting to happen, IMO.  For me, especially since I now live in a very rural area surrounded by strange noises at night, deer and other animals running around, and all sorts of imaginary goblins just waiting to lurk in my mind?

The answer is definitely yes.

Well, google's been redefining evil for a while.  And as long as they stick to their definition, they're doing no evil, right?

GitBook charges 20% per transaction.

I'm cautiously optimistic...  could also be a big middle finger to the traditional publishing model...

Update: So, following my own advice to do more investigation on open-source projects I find interesting.

So far, I see that Gitbook is owned by FriendCode.  Haven't done a corporate search, but a little cursory searching led me to Codebox (https://www.codebox.io/about).  They are owned by FriendCode also, so I assume at this point some correlation.

There is also a concerning bit in their TOS- the use of real names, and the ability to terminate accounts.

Violation of any of the terms below will result in the termination of your Account. While FriendCode prohibits such conduct and Content on the Service, you understand and agree that FriendCode cannot be responsible for the Content posted on the Service and you nonetheless may be exposed to such materials. You agree to use the Service at your own risk.

Account Terms
  • You must be a human, bots are not allowed
  • You must be 10 years or older to use this Service.
  • You must provide your legal full name (as name) and a valid email address (as email)
  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and password.
  • You are responsible for all Content posted and activity that occurs under your account (even when Content is posted by others who have accounts under your account).
  • One person may not maintain more than one free account.
  • You may not use the Service for any illegal or unauthorized purpose. You must not, in the use of the Service, violate any laws in your jurisdiction
  • Your use of the Service is at your sole risk
  • You must not modify, adapt or hack the Service

I wrote an e-mail, and am waiting to hear back.

Hi,

I'm a prospective user of gitbook.io, and I had a concern.  I don't want to write under my real name.  I have business concerns that I use my real name for, and don't want any contract or other issues, which is why I don't use my real name for either my hobby coding nor writing concerns.

However, it seems that things published must be connected to my legal name?  Or I'm subject to summary termination of account?

I just wanted to make sure of what was actually meant, i.e. was this absolute?  Especially in publishing where people ghost write and use pseudonyms, it seems that this is a bit short sighted.

Thanks for your time, and any response!

Update: I received a response today, which I've posted below.

Hi,

If your book is a paid book, you have to use your legal name, because otherwise we can't legally transfer you the money.

But if the book is a free or private book, feel free to use a pseudonym, we'll suspend the book only if the content is a stolen or illegal content.

You can only signup using twitter or github, so if you want to use a pseudonym, please make sure that your real name is not written on your Twitter/Github user profile.

So it seems that you can publish free content under a pseudonym, but not paid content.

If you're really concerned about crossfire:
http://www.tigerdire...lickCP&rrindex=1

But I wouldn't worry about it.  At one time, I was concerned... but I never ended up getting the second video card... and by the time I upgraded, the cards were always old and better served by just getting a better card.  And there are problems with crossfire support being in games, and concerns over the increased load of the additional card.  There are upsides, but I haven't missed it.

Not sure on the size of that Antec One case, but with my video card, there was barely clearance in my Antec 900 case, and I had to remove the HDD cage fan to get mine to fit.  Another thing to keep in mind.

I'd rather give them a couple bucks a month and get rid of all ads.

Amen!

I'm surprised that hasn't come of age before now.  And I wonder how long before a big player steps in.

For those who haven't seen them:

Patreon
Flattr

I'm sure there are others out there... but really, there's no excuse to depend on ads anymore IMO.

Proof? Since when was proof required for anything with these people? They maintain they don't even have to show you (or a court) the text of the law they claim you've broken. "Have waterboard - will travel!"

Well, yes, there is that.  But as the Lavabit guy showed, you can at least make it hard on them.

I just built one, if you want to compare...

http://pcpartpicker....aith808/saved/VL648d

I put that into an antec 900 case with a corsair hx620 PSU.

The builds actually look pretty similar :)

I've just been doing the multi-drive thing as of late, especially for gaming.

As far as the 27", if he's doing anything up close on his desktop, you might want to check the 27". In my experience, it was just too much too close.

The only ones I tend not to block now are the ones that use that Project Wonderful.  And I'm on the verge of blocking even them.  With Patreon up and running, I've been able to contribute to the sites that use that without accepting ads.  I'd rather give them a couple bucks a month and get rid of all ads.

My guess is that if the message is real, any discrepancies with proper Latin grammar, etc., can be relatively safely attributed to the difficulty in creating an English sentence to properly fit.

Certainly. But also remember that these people are cryptographers. I don't think getting it to work using a real Latin sentence would have been much of a challenge for them.

Maybe not much of a challenge on the surface.  The challenge is in doing so in a way that our Neighborhood Shopping Allies can't prove it was done intentionally.  Thus mistakes.

They responded to me within a few minutes, so I'm not sure what happened. :(  Been using multiplicity for a while... and now that they've added KVM support for headless use.  Stardock was the original company... they spun off their productivity software into Edgerunner to differentiate from their games and desktop customization division.  Which I guess makes sense from as much corporate interest as it gets.

That's not Latin.  Not even near in the same neighborhood as Latin.

No one is a villain in their own story.  That's just human nature.  Those that are behind PRISM and other initiatives think they're doing the right thing.  And I think that's the addictive part of it... the more you see, the more you think you need to see.

Someday, ^this should be a famous quote.

To be fair, I thought I may have remembered that from somewhere, though I love to quote it.

I've been using Multiplicity for years.  It's great software.  And it now has a dedicated subsidiary of Stardock around it, and version 3 has some really good improvement.  I'd recommend it, and if you're having problems with it, contact them.  As EdgeRunner is dedicated to the product, the support has improved massively.

Tesla, with the kind of leadership it has now, could very well be one of the most important pioneers in the future of energy.

If we take Tesla at face value, this patent move may well spur on or inspire others in the patent and energy worlds.

This.  The way that he was willing to invest his own money in the concept- and then succeed?  That's the kind of forward thinking we need.  And unless someone is willing to lead, it's unlikely that any will follow.

That's what's most exciting about what's being done with Tesla.  Not the car- but the leadership in a positive direction.  And that positive direction resulting in commercial success.  You don't have to be cut-throat to succeed.

I understand that, but just the same only 16% of the world's electric power comes from renewable sources. Period. So if all owners of electric vehicles wanted to charge their cars from renewable sources then there will very soon be a point where there isn't enough such power to cover all the electric vehicles.

And it would hopefully fuel interest in it.  The reason that only 16% comes from renewable sources is because of the fact that it costs more and so the demand for higher cost energy when lower cost alternatives are available just isn't there.
4744
Presently only about 16% of the world's electric power is from renewable sources, with almost all of the balance coming from Fossil fuels (67%) and nuclear plants (13%). Use of renewable sources is growing but it ain't here yet. Granted that electric cars themselves run cleaner those that run on gasoline/petrol. It's just the power we use to recharge them that still isn't that clean yet.

Getting there... slooowly.   8)

Jim

Not necessarily true.  I know of some people who charge their vehicles from renewable sources.  It's just more inconvenient.

It's really a matter of it becoming a priority at this point.
4745
It's simply stunning that the big car manufacturers haven't been able to do this. I really wonder what's wrong with them. They have serious problems, and I suspect that the problems are systemic. We see the exact same kinds of lack of innovation in other large companies/industries, e.g. telcos haven't managed to improve the quality of voice communications in a century. ::facepalm::

The answer is very simple.

Elon Musk is Tony Stark.

No... I guess I confused it a bit with the two > signs. (d'oh!  It's not a bit shift)

Engineers are greater than the patents on the innovations they create... and innovations are greater than the lawsuits to maintain what you already have.
4750
Well, he's also not stupid.  It's decidedly *not* open source.  He just said that those with the right intent- he won't go after.  Leaving the door open so that if someone has the wrong intent... well, he *will* go after them.

He sees the lay of the land... he's not competing with other electric car manufacturers.  He's competing with an entrenched enemy in the gas stations and the traditional car makers and the perceptions of what an electric car is.  He wants them to stop being seen as 'electric cars' and just be seen as 'cars'.  And he's going to get a lot of friction from a lot of different directions.  So... co-opt part of the perceived competition and turn them into allies against those who in the end probably never will be allies.  Get popular opinion on your side, and change the battleground.

Some serious Musashi going on here.  He's playing a totally different game, and I'm loving it!

This patent move is a beautiful thing, that speaks back to the days when innovation made this country great. Now if we can just spice up the occasion by getting a few (dozen...) patent trolls to jump out of high-rise windows...we can go ahead and make this a national holiday.

Engineers >> Patents
Innovation >> Lawsuits

I don't see why people don't see that the mind is the true treasure, and that the mind that conceived the idea is infinitely more valuable than any given idea.  And more minds looking at a problem produces better results in the end.

*sigh*
