General Software Discussion / Re: Downloading videos from Youtube

I've been using the YousableTubeFix for Chrome extension for quite some time and I think it's pretty good.

There's also dirpy. Or pwnyoutube. Take any YouTube URL and add "pwn" to the beginning of the domain. (and make sure you're not using https!)

e.g.:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=MCdfkVyDvhQ

becomes

It used to be free. But it went commercial.

Yup. It was called Frogatto then. Commercial version is called Frogatto&Friends, but also only Frogatto. It looks like they can't decide how to call their game ... :)

What is the difference between Frogatto and Frogatto and Friends? Maybe this will explain it:

Our earlier versions were freeware in order to attract feedback and some more developers for the team (including myself!). Our constant progress on developing the game has given us the confidence to sell and promote it commercially now - we're okay with people having access to those earlier versions for free, but onwards the stuff we're working on will be exclusive to commercial releases.
And it's a lot of great stuff - there'll be two new bosses and a completely reworked powerup system for the version we're currently working on, displayed on the trailer; we have at least another 2-4 big releases planned for the game after that.
Right now, yes, the free version in the Ubuntu repositories is the same as the version on Desura/Humble Store/IGS, sans some bugfixes, but that'll change quite soon.

The only negative they mentioned about the Gawker hack is that a lot of folks are receiving Acai berry spam! Haven't gotten any of that.

They said that people who used the same info for the Twitter accounts inadvertently Tweeted acai berry spam. (Accounts were hijacked to send the spam.)

I've gotten all sorts of spam since the Gawker hack. I used to only get maybe 15 spams a year to my account. But since the Gawker hack, I get 2-3 per day. It sucks. :(

General Software Discussion / Re: Special Security Software Just for Women?
« Last post by Deozaan on December 10, 2013, 05:37 PM »
Late last year, Panda Security released a Social Media Risk Index that shows Facebook was the leader in malware threats at 71.6 percent, YouTube came in at 41.2 percent and Twitter recorded a 51 percent risk for privacy violations.   And 33 percent of SMBs who typically have security technology in place for their users report financial losses to their business as a result of social media-based malware infection.   According to a new study from comScore, more women use social networking sites and spend more time on these sites than men do.  The study concluded that 76 percent of women spent time on social media sites compared with 70 percent of men, and women spent 5.5 hours a month on these sites compared to only 4 hours a month for men.

-hollowlife1987 (December 10, 2013, 09:26 AM)

So in other words, women get their malware from "0MG FACEB00K HAX! LOLZ!" (read: forgot to log out and your friend/relative made a post on your account) and just need to have their privacy/security settings explained to them.

Whereas men get their malware from pr0n sites and need more discrete support. Isn't it interesting that even in the digital age you're still fairly certain to get a virus of some sort?

Asteroid Destroyer is a game I made last year while trying to re-make simple games for the purpose of improving my coding skills. I posted about it here. It seemed finished enough and high enough quality to put on itch.io. While I was fixing it up and preparing it for that purpose I realized that I wanted to take it in a different enough direction that it warranted calling it by another name entirely. And thus Blasteroids was born.

Apparently it's been updated (in 2010) to work on modern PCs.

on the trigger game page:

  • start a game
  • right-click with mouse
  • select either "setup" or "about" - you will be sent to a new page
  • Game over....

Aha! I've disabled the context menu. That should no longer be a problem for you.

it simply kicks you out of the game - you cant bet back to it. Not ideal, but shouldnt normally be a problem.

What does it mean to be kicked out of the game? Does it take you to another page? Does the game stop loading? Does the plugin just go all white/black?

Here's the latest test build, with changes below:

Changes:
1. No more asteroids colliding with each other.
2. Larger asteroids have less mass than before, so they should get pushed around by forces more easily. (this should help keep them from being where you spawn when you spawn there)
3. Different looking asteroids.
4. Bullets move faster.

I had a similar problem once. I could access the internet just fine, and everything seemed to work perfectly except my own domain. I think I decided it was my ISP's DNS because http://isitup.org/ was showing my site was up, everyone else I asked could reach my website, and IIRC, I changed my network settings to use OpenDNS and then I could access my site. I called my ISP and they fixed it.

What do you mean you got kicked out of a game? Once it loads in your browser, it should continue to play in your browser. It doesn't require an active internet connection to keep playing, and it doesn't send data back and forth across the net. The high score table is just a local high score table stored on your PC.

So if you're getting "kicked out" then that makes me think the WebPlayer (Unity browser plugin) is crashing or there's something else going wrong with your computer/browser or something.

Yep, that'd be great, Deozaan. I just had a really hard time with the Google Docs way of doing things. If you'll send me your email address to kyrathasoft at gmail dot com, I'd happily give you access.

I'll send you a PM with my details.

In fairness to Perry and 4wd, I got antsy toward the end and launched the Titanic before she was completely ready for her native voyage (not an uncommon mistake among new authors, I'm learning). I have removed several problems since then that have been pointed out by various readers, but there are more remaining, as you noted.

I downloaded my copy pretty early on after it went on sale, so the version I read might already have been corrected. But I guess we'll see when I get access and can compare.

Developer's Corner / Re: GameMaker Studio Standard Free Upgrade
« Last post by Deozaan on November 29, 2013, 03:11 AM »
As in the article, it doesn't apply to the steam version, only standalone (which can autoupdate as well).
Btw, I'd appreciate good resources on this :)

The weird thing is that the Steam version does allow you to register for the free upgrade key, but it won't take it (for me).

The cool thing is if you download the standalone, non-Steam version and get the free upgrade key, you can then buy the NEXT upgrade for $50 which does include a Steam key.

Or in other words, you can get Game Maker Studio Professional for $50 on Steam this way.

Developer's Corner / GameMaker Studio Standard Free Upgrade
« Last post by Deozaan on November 27, 2013, 01:30 PM »
There's a free upgrade from GameMaker Studio to Standard Edition. Details below:

At first, I thought of Game Maker as a tool for unskilled beginners to make psuedo, they-don’t-count games. Then Spelunky came along and took away my snobbery, showing me that the entry-level tool could be used to create fantastic games. Then Gunpoint came along, and replaced my snobbery outright with a permeating sense of bitterness and regret; the kind which penetrates deep to your core and gradually erodes all your personal relationships.

Consider me a cautionary tale, and make use of this offer: Game Maker Studio‘s Standard edition, which normally costs $50, is free at the moment.

What about simple impulse movement using cursor keys (up, down, left, right)?  That wouldn't be hard for player to do while aiming and shooting.

I'm planning on making this game available for Android, too. Which means I'd like to keep the controls simple enough to use on a touch screen. Personally I'm not a fan of those virtual joysticks. They're hard to use properly without the tactile feedback an actual joystick provides.

I think that having to press 2 buttons as well as move the mouse will just be too confusing. I think what I'll do also allow you to press the spacebar to aim+shoot. Wherever the mouse cursor is pointing is where you'll turn to shoot.

I'm sure the sounds are just temporary, but I wanted to point out that the jumping sound effect sounds like a bullet being fired or something similar.

If you happen to remember any of the typos, or have jotted them down, lemme know. I'll correct and upload the corrected ebook.

I've highlighted them and bookmarked them in my eReader app (Google Play Books). But I'm not really sure how to give you an accurate reference to them since there aren't definite page numbers that I'm aware of.
