Just came across this very nicely catalogued free (creative commons) sound library website, thefreesoundproject:

The Freesound Project aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, ... released under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus License. The Freesound Project provides new and interesting ways of accessing these samples, allowing users to

    * browse the sounds in new ways using keywords, a "sounds-like" type of browsing and more
    * up and download sounds to and from the database, under the same creative commons license
    * interact with fellow sound-artists!

We also aim to create an open database of sounds that can also be used for scientific research. Many audio research institutions have trouble finding correctly licensed audio to test their algorithms. Many have voiced this problem, but so far there hasn't been a solution.

The "Creating Passionate Users" Blog is one of the best sources for insightfull essays on user interface design and on building software for users.  Right up there with Joel Spolsky in terms of good writing and solid principles.

I only just recently noticed that the bloggers there share something in common: They are all are all authors who have published with with O'Reilly's "Head First books" publisher house (http://www.wickedlysmart.com).  I don't know if the publisher put them together or if all the authors from that series have been invited to blog on that site, but it's a great idea.. I wish more organizations/publishers would try to team up a group of authors to make a team blog.. Relieves some of the stree of publishing daily and the interaction could be useful.

Anyway, today's essay is very thought provoking and somewhat counter-intuitive, and talks about the nature of the demo you should show off of your work-in-progress..

When we show a work-in-progress (like an alpha release) to the public, press, a client, or boss... we're setting their expectations. And we can do it one of three ways: dazzle them with a polished mock-up, show them something that matches the reality of the project status, or stress them out by showing almost nothing and asking them to take it "on faith" that you're on track.

The bottom line:
How 'done' something looks should match how 'done' something is.

ps. Very recently the "Creating Passionate Users" people seem to be really seriously trying to grub for attention from Robert Scoble.. It's a bit annoying.

« Last post by mouser on December 27, 2006, 07:55 AM »
Just wrapping up my posts about some of the best new sites of 2006 that we have linked to recently but never posted about directly.

Cybernet is one of the newer websites and they have been producing some serious content at breakneck speed.  Let's hope for our sakes that they keep it up!

CyberNet Technology News was started on December 4, 2005 with a goal of sharing the latest technology news with our readers who are just as passionate about technology as we are. You will find this weblog filled with a variety of information ranging from the coolest hardware to beta software. The world of technology and all that encompasses it is always changing and doing so very rapidly. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the latest. We publish articles daily and frequently about current relevant technology news. CyberNet News is written and edited by Ryan and Ashley Wagner.

General Software Discussion / Re: i need an email stripper

Do you need an email-program-agnostic solution, which will run prior to any email client receiving the email (which would be an interesting program, sort of like a pop proxy which did regex replacement according to user script), or do you have an email client you want to write a script with (like thebat)?

i agree the rating system is chaos.
and misleasing in the sense that if an author wants he can easikly bump up his scores and bury competitors.  so i definiltely advise taking the ratings with a huge grain of salt.

Official Announcements / The 2006 Best Of Year-End Wrap.. Online!
« Last post by mouser on December 27, 2006, 02:55 AM »
Ok, the "2006 Best Of Year-End Wrap" is now online!

It took so long to put this up that I'm sure I missed tons of sites and included tons of stuff that surely is less deserving.  So consider this a work in progress and please do submit suggestions to me for stuff I should add and stuff I should remove.  It's fine to suggest your own sites, but please do give me a link to a thread on the forum as everything comes from there (make a new post if you have to).

You can post suggestions here or email them to [email protected], or submit them through the suggestion form on the page above.

Please pass on the link to any friends who don't visit DC regularly but might want to get a flavor for the site!

As part of the preparation for the 2006 year-end wrap-up, I'm posting about a few sites that we've mentioned a lot but never in their own post.

There are several really good new software listing sites (www.snapfiles.com is one of my favorites), but I know of no other site which focuses so much on beta releases and goes to such steps to list new betas before they become official (in fact i have to be carefull even just making a post about a private beta of one of my programs on the forum because somehow the hive mind of betanews seems to discover and post about it!)

Thanks for the reminder, will fix in new version.

my plan for the next major version of farr is to make it heavily plugin based, so this would fit in well with that.  im reluctant to add too much of such stuff until then though.

i will however be adding an internal history thing to farr though so you can scroll through past launches.
28299
I can't tell you all how helpfull it is to have your bug reports and suggestions.. Really makes it fun.

ps.
Josh found another real bug: the directory searching stuff has messed up any aliases with / and \ in them, so you can no longer type: "http://www.amazon.com" and be offered to browse to it, since the regex never sees the // any more.  will be fixed in next update.

A Dark and Deadly Path v1.05.01 - December 31st, 2006
A super tiny little audio game engine

Screenshot - 12_31_2006 , 10_51_44 AM.png

ADDP (A Dark And Deadly Path) is a tiny little interactive story game engine.

It works like the old Dragon's Lair LaserDisc game [1], or like those "choose your own adventure games [2], but is audio only and involves no graphics.

Basically an ADDP story/game is an audio story where the reader/play must choices along the way by pressing a key on the keyboard. The chioces may have to be made rapidly in quick succession within a narrow  time window which can add an element of panic to the story - and make it a particular appropriate device for for suspense stories.

Audio files are normal .mp3 files that an author records with standard software.  The game script is an .xml file with a format to be described in a separate file.

DOWNLOAD: Here.

Special thanks to Della for creating a test game/story for it!
