Automatic Screenshotter / Automatic Screenshotter v1.17.01 - Jan 3, 2020
« Last post by mouser on June 24, 2018, 04:33 AM »
Automatic Screenshotter is a tool that lives down in your system tray and takes regular screenshots of your desk or the active window. The intention is to be a fairly lightweight primitive "backup" tool, like an airplane black box, so that in a case of last resort (app or system crash) you can go back and see what was on your screen at a certain time in the past.

Features:
  • It's made to run in the background, taking screenshots of either the currently active foreground window, or the entire desktop.
  • You can configure how often the screenshots are taken, and how they are named. The naming can include putting them into subdirectories and can be based on the data, time, and application name.
  • It will automatically prune older screenshots based on limits you set regarding screenshot age, # screenshots to keep, and total file space you want to use.
  • It will also try to be smart about avoiding saving multiple screenshots when the window (desktop) contents don't actually change, with some configurable tolerances, to minimize disk space used.
  • It can also be told about certain applications to never capture, or alternatively a small list of applications that it should only ever capture.
  • It can be configured to ignore capture when your pc has been idle for a certain amount of time, or when screensaver is running, or when full-screen games are running.
  • You can also manually trigger a capture with a hotkey.
  • You can also toggle capturing on-and-off easily from system tray menu.
  • Screenshots are saved as standard png files.
  • In summary, the focus is on an automated system of recording recent activity on the screen, and trying to be well behaved regarding disk space usage. You should be able to set it and forget it, until you need to go back and see what was on the screen at a certain time in the near past.

I have added the commandline option "-capturemon #" to minicap, it will be in next upload.
2180
Another security thing you might add is, because you are copying to a network drive, not just check that the copy operation succeeded, but actually check that the destination file exists (and maybe is the same size)?  I'm not trying to make more work for you, I'm just being paranoid when it comes to anything that involves deleting files.  The good part is this is a custom app for one person so there's not too much room to do harm.

Don't forget you can right-click on a result and choose Properties to see its file size.
2182
Would it be possible to ignore new clips whenever KeePass is the active window?
Well that's what it does when you add KeePass to the ignore list.  The problem is that at the moment the new clip is copied to the clipbard, KeePass minimizes and another app becomes active focus.. So CHS thinks that the clip came from the other app.

A possible solution would be, when a clipboard event happens, look not just at the active window, but the window previously active -- and if its on the ignore list and was active less than say 250 milliseconds previous, assume that it probably came from the PREVIOUSLY active window.
2183
Doubleclick some entry (KeePass is set to minimize, which activates the next window, in this case Vivaldi).

Ah.. ok so I think I understand a bit better now -- KeePass is minimizing BEFORE CHS sees the new clip... That's a really tricky situation, since CHS thinks another app put the text on the clipboard..

Thanks for explaining it again, now at least I can test and see if I can figure out a solution..

One potential solution might be to check if the active window has changed within milliseconds of the clipboard event, and checking against the previous window if so.

I will note that for 99% of cases, this minimize on copy situation will not be relevant, so CHS will be able to ignore apps properly.
2184
I have uploaded a new beta version -- though I'm not sure why it would work where previous beta did not.
I would appreciate someone testing again.

If you find the issue is not fixed, I would appreciate double checking that you are running the latest beta (2.43.2) and then if I could trouble you to tell me the process to repeat the bug.. You can email me if you prefer that instead of posting ([email protected]).

Beta urls same as above:
2185
Keeping in line with my suggest before, I suggest you not have an option to bypass the recycle bin -- at least until the app is well tested (and certainly don't make it bypass recycle bin by default!).  I suggest you change the option to say "Bypass recycle bin (dangerous)."
2186
Yeah, I can't say I wish I didn't stain it something light and golden and closer to original wood color... But I hope it will look less dark when it is filled with stuff, and that I will like it better over time.
2187
No you have to add it to any search.  The easiest approach is to make a hotkey that shows FARR and adds the modifier automatically.

You could also make your own regular expression alias that added the modifiers using a dosearch command, so you could type for example "c blah blah" and have an alias trigger on the "c" and remap the search run as if it were "+modifier1 +modifier 2 blah blah".

It's an interesting idea to support the ability to set (and clear) a persistent modifier string.. Perhaps showing it in titlebar or something..
2188
There is a way.  You can specify keyword "modifiers" in your search folders and scoring patterns.  Then when searching you can use +keywordmodifier to only trigger the directories and/or scoring patterns you care about.
You can then set a hotkey to bring up FARR with that +keywordmodifier already in place.
2189
A suggestion:
Many of us coders get very nervous writing code that deletes files -- it's the one place where a mistake can cause real harm.  It might be a good idea to make the deletion of files an option, and turn it off by default.  Or not enable it in your initial version, and instead write some messages about what files would be deleted.  Until you are really sure there are no mistakes regarding deleting files.  This goes doubly for deleting entire folders..

How does one copy a shortcut (.LNK ir file) with Inno Setup?
It's just a regular file so you do everything with it as you would a normal file -- that's why a couple of us are suspecting that you are just not providing the full file name -- perhaps because it's not showing it to you in your windows explorer when you look at it.

Are you using Inno Studio or one of the modern GUI front ends for Inno Setup? They really can make life easier.
2192
Well, the photos of it stained and finished do not look so great -- it looks a bit dark, muddy and busy:
officelongbookcase_finished2.jpg

I think it looks a lot better in real life, and will look a lot better once it is filled.  Having said that, I think maybe next time I will try a much more natural light golden stain, rather than the reddish brown one I've been using...

Once again I used a lot of coats of a thin wipe-on urethane (Arm-R-Seal satin).  It creates a very nice looking and feeling finish that is quite forgiving to apply.  The downside is it takes 5-8 coats so it's very time consuming.  The stain is a water-base aniline dye, which I find a lot less prone to blotching than other types.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR vs LISTARY
« Last post by mouser on June 21, 2018, 09:39 PM »
Welcome to the site Hilario -- I apologize for the delayed reply. I was hoping someone else would post a reply before me :)

There is nothing wrong with using both programs or using the one that works best for you.  In general, FARR is much more focused on launching applications, and performing actions, and less focused on finding document files.

I'm trying to remember if anyone has written a plugin for FARR to open it and have it start showing the contents of the directory that was open in the windows file explorer window.. It's not a terrible idea.

Sounds like a very interesting project.

Two really cool meta fan comics imagining the life of fictional cartoonist Jon Arbuckle (owner of Garfield the cat):

You have to be familiar with the long-running uber-popular Garfield comic to appreciate these.

Mini-documentary about the race to conquer Mario Kart's Choco Mountain in seconds

It's amazing to see the dedication some people have to some small niches in the world -- in some ways it seems to me the best part of humanity..

Enjoy this surprisingly dramatic and gripping YouTube mini-documentary about one of gaming's strangest and most obsessive cults: racing around Mario Kart 64's Choco Mountain track. Thanks to glitchy shortcuts, racers winnowed times down to just a few seconds. But getting the trick right for all three laps of a time trial?

It sounds like what ATH is saying is your problem -- that the source shortcut files you are referring to as "...\abc-launch" are really named "...\abc-launch.lnk" and you just aren't seeing the .lnk extension in your windows file explorer which is causing you to think they are named differently than they really are, causing inno to not find them.  Does that sound plausible?

I'm surprised that I don't have a commandline option to capture a specific monitor screen by monitor # in my MiniCap program (the little brother to Screenshot Captor), so the least I can do is add that right away in the next day or so.
