Ouch! I completely missed crediting mouser on this one - these newsletters are a big collaborative effort so I must give credit where it is due

Newsletter for October 7th, 2008
Codename "Tech News Weekly"

"If you read nothing else on our site, why bother to read this?"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings! We hope that this (tardy) newsletter finds you well. We'd like to start by reprising our reminder from the last newsletter about the new "Member Map". Follow the link below to take a look at it and, if you haven't already done so, add yourself! This is a fun way to see where everyone is - putting places to names, so to speak.

A month or so ago, mouser and veign awarded an MSDN Visual Studio Bundle to longtime DC member Eoin O'Callaghan. It was a very tight race, though, and they almost awarded it to new DC member VideoInPicture. Another bundle became available and they have recognized the contributions that VideoInPicture has already made in such a short time by awarding it to him. See the link below to read mouser's announcement and join us in congratulating VideoInPicture (Eric Wong).

We'd also like to highlight DC member Ehtyar's Tech News Weekly threads, posted in the Living Room section of the forum. He highlights interesting technology and software stories and is seeking input on refinements that he has made to the layout. While you're reading the thread, check out 40hz' cool graphic and weigh in on the suggestion that a dedicated child board be started!

Finally, in the northern hemisphere we welcome with mixed feelings the arrival of fall. For our southern friends spring is here!

2. Your Participation Requested

Jump right in, go on, you know you want to... If you need some inspiration for your first post, look no further than the following threads. We'd love your input!

3. Help and Advice from Member to Member

No, this is not an agony-Aunt column! However, if you need get some input on tech related issues and decisions, the DC forum is a great place to turn. Read on for some recent discussions and feel free to join in the conversation or post an issue of your own.

4. Fun And Games

Work, work, work, work... Yawn! We can't be serious all the time... Let's have some fun!

5. The Weird Wide Web

Here are some recent items from around the web that Donationcoders thought were noteworthy. As always, your input is encouraged, so if you come across something interesting while you're surfing the web, feel free to post a link to it.

6. Software Discussion

A love of software is the glue that binds us together at Donationcoder. Here are some recent threads of interest:

7. DC Software and Member Contributions

There is a lot of quality software available on Donationcoder, all of it coded by our members. Read below for some recent announcements and discussion.

8. Coding Snacks and Member Contributions

Coding snacks are lite treats for the software afficionado. All you have to do is ask... Post a clear description of what you're looking for and one of DonationCoder's resident coding gurus might just take up the challenge.

9. Developer's Corner

The Developer's Corner is more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also a place in which entrepreneurial issues can be discussed.

« Last post by Darwin on October 05, 2008, 10:08 PM »
I hear, ya, Jim. Baby steps for me, too. It's been a while since I had SQLNotes installed and I'm finding my feet.

I openly credit Vista's original EULA for pushing me toward Linux.

No pun intended, eh Zaine?

Your HTML nesting is incorrect, it should be:

First offense is a warning, subsequent offenses result in severe ridiculing.

Yours Sincerely,

I think it's just a tiny bit more than simple semantics, but you're absolutely right. ;D

And it's cheap.

Cheap is good. Very good. I was just thinking that for jotting down notes in the shower, a pen would be easier to use than a wax crayon. However, if one could write ON the shower stall, transfer one's notes at a later time, and then clean the shower stall - BETTER

What? You actually searched the Dopus Resource Centre forum?!  :-[ Nicely done, thanks

Hmm... IMNSHO, this discussion/argument is really about semantics. I *think* this is why people take such pains to differentiate between "free", "open-source", "donationware", etc. Witness some of the inane threads we've had here over the years in which someone will drop in to lambaste our beloved leader for what they perceive to be his incorrect use of the term "free" in describing the cost of using one of his applications... It would be nice if everyone would just get together to come up with universal definitions for these things: free means you can use the app without paying for it, Open Source means you can monkey around with the innards of the application, donationware means use it and if you like it shoot the developer some shekels for his or her hard work (but no one is going to hold your feet to the fire to make you do so), etc.

40hz, I am with you on the issue of commercial developers/vendors describing crippled demos as "free". But then, that's us, right back to semantics  :D

Chinagraph pencil is basically like wax crayons but less soft and wrapped in a protective way.

You could also invest in either a Fisher Space Pen or a Fisher Space Pen Refill...

[cue maniacal laughter][rant]So... does iTunes still install about 15 services that HAVE to run in order for it to work? The lack of any sort of provision for end-user input into what runs with the program had me screaming like a madman until I finally decided to cut my losses and uninstall it for good. I do not own an iPod and thus don't need to have a service running to enable iTunes to communicate with an iPod. Likewise, I don't need iTunes plugins loading into Outlook when I open it... and so on! Just curious if version 8.x addressed these long-standing beefs. My experience going from 4.x to 5.x to 6.x to 7.x was that rather than addressing users' concerns with each new release Apple ADDED MORE crap that runs with iTunes (and which must be running if you want iTunes to function).[/cue maniacal laughter][/rant]

General Software Discussion / Re: Can You Run OS X on a Virtual Machine?
« Last post by Darwin on October 05, 2008, 06:57 PM »
If Apple wants a better chance of taking over the operating system market share, the least they could do is make it easy for developers to run OS X on a virtual machine so that you don't have to buy an Apple machine just to run OS X.
-VideoInPicture (October 05, 2008, 05:29 PM)

That's just it, though, I don't think Apple IS that interested in selling the OS to the unwashed, non-Apple hardware using masses... I mean, with their move to Intel chips you'd *think* that they'd do this eventually, but... For now it seems to me that they are content to position themselves as a premium hardware and OS supplier, trading on the perception of exclusivity that goes along with their strategy.

If you've managed to get the install DVD's off your harddrive, I wouldn't worry about it, then. I mean, it'd be nice to have a 64-bit OS, but not worth getting bent out of shape over. If you were actually buying the full installation from MS, I think it would be a no brainer, but you'll be fine with the OEM 32-bit version for the forseeable future, I think.

PS re: above post, just to clarify, my point was that no matter what *solution* one turns up to allow OS X to be run on a non-Apple computer, you're going to be breaking the EULA.

And why do you need this info really?

Same reason people put their computer specs in their signature files, or on car forums people post details about their Subaru or Honda or '67 Pontiac... Common interest.

Not to be a stickler, but please note that the no-hacking installations of OS X (on non-Apple PCs) requires that one download and burn to DVD a pre-hacked version of OS X... I have the installation discs for Tiger but I still can't install them on my Gateway computer. I *suspect* that if one were to create an iso image of the first DVD, one would be able to edit one or more of the files used by the installer to allow the OS to be installed, but I've no idea what files to edit or what info needs to be added/removed to make this possible.

« Last post by Darwin on October 05, 2008, 03:35 PM »
Sorry, Mahesh - when you describe someone as being on "fire", your saying that they're unstoppable and performing at a high level. Can be talking about making cutting remarks, telling jokes, swimming the 400m freestyle, closing real estate deals, whatever. So... Deozaan has been cranking out really funny - and spot on - LOL Cat pictures. Thus, he's "on fire".

No worries, Curt  As far as 32-bit vs 64-bit goes, the main difference (for me) is the ability of the OS to access and use all the RAM installed on your computer. I actually, jumped at a cheap upgrade from 3 to 4 GB of RAM on my notebook, knowing that there was a risk that it would be all for nought, and it was! However, even with it only recognising 3GB, it FLIES.

Re: your install discs, before you return the computer, check to see if the discs are actually located on your harddrive and that you don't need to use a factory installed recovery program to burn them to DVD?

It was crazy reference to Sting's song.
-fenixproductions (September 22, 2008, 06:41 PM)

Ah... I should have just googled the phrase, didn't think of that  :o

Can anyone else comment on File Managers with explorer type behavior as described on the previous page.

just took a very cursory look at DOpus to see if it is capable of the explorer-type behaviour you're asking about (the ability to copy/move/delete the file folders associated with html files with one automatically, if I am reading your post right?), and can't find that kind of functionality. However, I'd bet that it is already possible or that you could create a button to do this. At the moment, I don't have access to any other file managers (they're on my other machine), but will try to remember to look into this next time I do.
