General Software Discussion / Re: ReImage: online Windows repair!

For (most) private people (me!) ReImage is much too expensive!

I tested the program's initial scanner, wrote the above post, and clicked Uninstall. I was then asked why I wanted to do this, so I clicked that I couldn't afford the price, and even gave my name and email address. To my surprise I was offered to have the program at €24,95 Hmm... "ReImage is now half too expensive"... well, you've already guessed it: I took the offer!

The repair took less than an hour, and a reboot.
Did it work? Yes! The error that worried me, has gone!

Edit: This was on Win 7 Home Premium.
I am saving the above mentioned Win 8 Pro disk for later.

The normal price is $70 / €53 for a year,
Now with a 20% discount.
To redeem this amazing offer please use this coupon code: con20
Yearly Unlimited $55.96
Yearly for 3 PC's $79.96
-ReImage
If it does all these jobs it says, for a small office that is not a bad idea. but it's not that far from win7 upgrade price, no?

The con20 discount is plus VAT, making it €54 => $75 all the same.
I am not a small office, so I purchased Win 8 Pro for $35 instead.

but if I alttab to the desktop from FF, then alttab again, FF is again at the end of the list/row,

info: Win+Tab if you prefer the larger flip view
Alt+Esc if the desktop is not to be included.

Very often the easiest way for me is to click the icon C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch > Window Switcher, because the desktop then is merely one scroll backwards.

hmm... because of the European winter storms today I have had quite a few problems with lack of Internet connections.

;D thanks, Tom, that was funny! I have never played with Alt+Tab or Window Switcher before. But no matter how I did, DT came last. So if the way exist, it surely must be via some third party application. Maybe one way could be to use numbers - Switcher ( http://www.guidingte...alt-tab-alternative/ ) worked like that. One related problem is of course that many third party apps doesn't include the desktop (search "alternative to alt+tab")! But other than that, this is yet another (funny) area of which I know nothing ;-)

After version 1.5.1, IEView was taken over by "someone else" and is now a carrier for "Superfish" advertizing, "WizeShoppy". Luckily, it is an option, you're not forced into "advert browsing" (I use version 1.5.6 without advertizing). But if you not are okay with that, the last "clean" version (1.5.1) can be found (only) at https://addons.mozil...page=1#version-1.5.1

sorry I posted too early, but I had lost track of time and my movie was suddenly beginning. What I was thinking, when the television commercials were showing and giving me time to think about this thread, was, that the reviews were suspicious - but I kept looking at the clock and decided I didn't have the time tonight to investigate any further. But right now I will not be surprised if none of the praising reviewers exist.

But you can still have a free key tonight, ehh... I assume! I haven't tried. I don't want it.

General Software Discussion / Re: FLV downloader needed
« Last post by Curt on March 16, 2013, 01:46 PM »
I pretty much gave up on all those vid-downloaders, they work for a while until youtube (and others) changes things, or they're loaded with adware.

Now I use VideoCacheView.  Now I don't have to download the same video twice, first time watching it, second time downloading it.  With VideoCacheView, you watch all the movies you want, then run VideoCacheView, select the vids that you want to keep, and it copies them to the folder you choose.

I both agree and disagree. Many videos are available in much higher resolution than the auto-played one, especially if it was on facebook. So, as an example, I watch a 640 pixels version, but want to keep the 1920 pixels version - which is not in the cache.

** Curt, in the video for AWC it shows the following hotkey options: it's not clear if there's any more. Could you let me know if there are?

-I couldn't say! My stand has been that if I need the hotkeys, I have not chosen the right wallpapers. ;-) But your question made me first search the AWC forum and then realize that it really has been quite a while since anything happened; I am not too sure the program even is maintained anymore! If he is preparing for version 5 or something entirely else, I cannot know, but I guess it would be best not to make a purchase right now.

Sometimes I get lazy and don't want to reach for the home key on the keyboard.  I would rather use my mouse to go to top page of a site without scrolling with the mouse.

I am running Waterfox, so my home key does almost nothing. I have never before been wanting to use mouse gestures, but Waterfox is making it a necessity. However, merely looking at All-in-one Gestures made me tired; I want two features, not a hundred and seventeen! Sorry, skwire, I can't take this much fun, when browsing. So instead I went for this:

About this Add-on:
Scroll to Top/Bottom adds toolbar buttons and context menu options for jumping to the top or bottom of the current page.

Love New Tab King - thanks Curt!

-glad you like it, CleverCat. However, I never understood the deeper meaning of New Tab King (!) - I only tested it for a few minutes, to see if it could replace Launchy, and then removed it, because it also was so many other things that I didn't want it to be - so I would really like you to tell about it, please:

General Software Discussion / Re: waiting for Task Host window to close
« Last post by Curt on March 11, 2013, 11:31 AM »
It sounds like you returned after a longer time period, which puzzles me a bit - I thought the shutdown process ended up doing force-kill after a few minutes or so.

-yes, maybe half an hour went by. But this is why I was talking about Catch 22: the "force-kill" should be done by Task Host, the very same program Windows was waiting for!

My guess is that Task Host believed it was showing a popup box, which I needed to click. Anyway, the problem was a first time ever, and I hope never to experience it again. I am just disappointed it could even happen in the first place.

Thanks for explaining!

General Software Discussion / waiting for Task Host window to close
« Last post by Curt on March 10, 2013, 07:28 PM »
The day before yesterday I ran CrystalDiskInfo, and the thermometer said 42°C. Yesterday it said 48°C, and today it is shouting 58°C (you can cook a roast-beef at this temperature)!! - each time after approx 2 hours from Start.

-this problem suddenly became a potential life-threatening problem!  :o

I had never heard about the Microsoft Windows 7 program Task Host until today. Windows Media Player was filling my ears with sweet sounds, and was the only program doing any work worth mentioning, when suddenly I needed to leave in a hurry. So I clicked "Start" > "Exit", and went off.

Being asked later on if I could do this and that, I felt I needed to get some warmer cloth because winter just came back this morning, so I quickly returned to my home. Lucky me! To my big and sad surprise, I found Windows "waiting for Task Host window to close"!

Why "lucky me"? Because, if I haven't returned, my hard drives could have caught fire (seriously!) and burned down the house and killed a hundred and seventeen people. And their relatives and their assurance companies would have chased me to the end of the world... All because someone somewhere made a pooh, or didn't.

The task host's job is to end and close programs, and stop tasks already running. It has no window. Well, it had no window. Get me right; it may have a window in certain circumstances, but it did not display any window at this particular moment, because there was no window at all to see. So why wait for something that is not going to happen in the first place? I don't know if you are familiar with an old book called "Catch 22", but in my imagination this situation already was building up to become a Catch 22 situation! I accept it as a fact that it merely was in my imagination, because in real life I simply clicked the "force"-button, of course.

And now to my question...: On former editions of Windows we could have some third party application to force programs to exit, preventing this "never-closing Windows". Please name such a useful program (or setting?) for my 64-bits Windows 7 Home Premium. I can't remember any relevant application names at the moment, so I need your help again.
