Living Room / Re: Guide to Living with Introverts
« Last post by tomos on August 20, 2016, 02:09 PM »
here's a bigger (printable) version:
http://romanjones.de...-available-291305760

The energy idea is very interesting. I do get that that some people (try to) steal energy. The 'amn't I great' is one way, the 'poor me' another.

I do remember the introversion topic coming up on dc a good while back and someone seperating the idea of shyness from the idea of introvertedness. I can relate to that because although I'm more of an extrovert, I am also (very often, at any rate) very shy.

Maybe one is nature (introvert/extrovert), the other conditioning of some sort? Not being very articulate here, but thinking that shyness is maybe to do with ways of thinking, probably usually related to what we learned growing up (especially through example). Whereas I presume one can be introverted and just not want to talk to people in many situations, without having to be shy. As someone who at times waffles when nervous/meeting new people, I would have great respect for that (i.e. for being relaxed yet not wanting to say much at that moment and time).

Especially loved part two of the comic: 'How to interact...'

(I loved The Crow Road on BBC from about 2000, which Banks said was in some ways better than his novel! The device of Rory speaking to Prentiss was a clever invention of the script.)

(will have to watch that again, as I can only remember snippets. I do remember enjoying it, looking forward to next episode.)

Screenshot Captor / Re: The large amount of memory
« Last post by tomos on August 17, 2016, 09:42 AM »
Screenshot captor can't stitch images in a vertical strip if there's many of empty white space in the map (gaps).

Nothing can stitch where there is no information -
even if doing it completely manually you will need overlapping info.

I've done a few quite large maps manually in 32bit Photoshop, with 8GB memory and no video card with no problems (using a .psd file for the working image and compressed tiff for the final image). Stitching manually was reasonably quick. But I never looked at the numbers (quantity, filesizes etc.) for what I did do.
So,
it's very much going to depend on just how many screenshots you plan to merge.

I'd just give it a go and see how far I get.

I see Gimp is available in 64bit - another possibility

[The Quiet Twin - Dan Vyleta]

did you find that one as good as the reviews suggested?
1758
^^ yeah, and the easiest way to activate and use (in win 7 at any rate) is:
  • Win and + [plus key]
  • Win and - [minus key]
#1 activates it and zooms in, #2 will then also work.

But apart from this workaround, I'm (obviously) still hoping mouser will have another look at font sizes.

well, following and skimming it, yes.
considering a BDJ purchase mainly because of Steven showing how he uses it, and seeing the good feedback here.

This one is Hong Kong - all images are mirrored, once, or sometimes twice to give a kaleidoscope effect.
I loved it

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 - The gloves come off!
« Last post by tomos on August 01, 2016, 12:25 AM »
How so?  I didn't even know about that difference until this came up.  I think it's a non-issue for most users of Windows 10.  Not that I'm taking up for them.  But it does seem like a tempest in a teapot.

my point was that that is not acceptable on a professional (used for work) machine.
As for home users of 10, it sounds like we're at the mercy of MS: seems to me it depends very much on how they use/abuse this, and where they take it.

The “free upgrade” to Windows 10 has ended.  It is now time for Microsoft to reel in their nets and start processing the catch.
[..]
Step 2: Prevent users from disabling ads and forced installs.

there must be a lot of professional users of the pro edition -- I cant see link #2 there being accepted by them. Hopefully MS will change that.
But would still be a crappy experience for home users then...

Thanks Armando

Related but different, from MilesAhead (I haven't used it):
My ahk general purpose hotkey saves the current clipboard text, then sends Control c to copy the highlighted text in the active window.  Then is restores the saved text to the clipboard after launching BingThing.exe with the selected text.  If nothing is selected that is OK.  Either a new BingThing process starts, or if it is already running, it activates and gets the focus.

Anything on the command tail BingThing copies to the Input Line ready for either search or launch.  As shown in the screen shot, if you have browsers set to open urls in new tabs and they support multiple urls on the command line, such as Firefox or chrome or opera, then it will open multiple sites by just typing the domains on the same line.

BingThing saves the most recently used 128 url/search items.  The file handling is still a bit rough.  But at least there is some history.

Skrommel's Software / Re: How do I uninstall desklock.ini
« Last post by tomos on July 24, 2016, 03:15 PM »
Hi Dave,
Skrommel's software is always portable, so just delete the desklock.exe file (and by the sounds of it, the ini file it created).
If you used the AHK file, delete that.

PS, you'll find them wherever you put them. If you dont know where that is, try windows search.

[edit] not sure does this even qualify as a 'board game' but here it is anyways [/edit]

Codenames:
nothing really to do with (spy) theme -- it's a word game.

Roughly:
a bunch of word cards are displayed on the table.
There's two or more teams, each with a 'spymaster'.
With two team, (almost) half the word cards belong to each team. Only the spymaster knows which cards -- they have to give their team clues, if their team correctly guesses the related words, the cards are covered/marked with the team colour.

It took us a round or two before we got into the game -- and into the way of thinking of the spymaster. It was very enjoyable -- our spymaster was pretty adventerous at times with the clues which made it interesting. Note: one clue can be used for multiple cards. (Spymaster states how many cards.)

Playing in German was helpful: you can string words together to make new words. (We didnt inspect the rules too closely to see if this allowed.)

The spymaster's view with three teams playing:

Screenshot - 2016-07-24 , 13_48_43.png

(whoever guesses the dark card by mistake loses instantly)

^ to run the script:

Download AHK and get it started -- I'm using a portable version, they also have an installer version.

Save script above to a file, and give the file an .AHK extension

Modify script as required:
  • path
  • replace xslx with * if you want all files

Run script file

Is there any other way to check for (windows) updates?
I did find this method, but think it's a bit over my head:

and this appears to be a solution for updating a windows machine without using winupdate:
