Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2010, 06:21 PM »
i just dragged the start menu taskbar to the side monitor -- and kept my primary monitor centered.

i *think* i did that so that applications that by default open on primary monitor would still open on my centered monitor.

i dont have any icons shown on my desktop, i use a launchbar for that (LaunchBar Commander), docked to the side of the screen.

We are both using the Ultramon program which puts the taskbar at the bottom of both monitors. It is set so that only the programs running on a particular monitor are shown on its taskbar.

ultramon isn't the only program that does this, but i use it as well.  it is very useful to have a different taskbar on each monitor.  i don't use any of the other fancy features of ultramon.

i also put the main taskbar with startmenu and system tray on a side monitor (not the central one).

Is there a board here on the specifics of DC IRC?

if you press the "Chat!" button at the top of the forum you'll be taken to a web interface to the chat room.  those with irc clients can connect to any efnet server, and join the room: #donationcoder

there is always someone around there.

my main pc is still xp pro, so i don't have UAC prompts here :)

however, on the other win7 machine..

if you are saying the procedure is:
1. set reg key manually
2. Navigate to the TC2010 with an Administrative Command Prompt and run Clock /Sync This will partially load a 2nd (hook-less) copy of TC2010 that will synchronize the time with the selected NTP Server and then exit.

then i regret to say it but i'd much rather bring up the adjust date/time dialog in windows and navigate and click on the Update Time button.  it's hard for me to envision a scenario where i think it would make sense for you to write your own time sync code with your own configuration of time servers..  maybe i'm not the normal user for this, but if i'm running this once per week or month, i have no problem at all dealing with a UAC prompt for such a thing.. but more significantly, i just dont see why you should have to implement this yourself, it seems like a clear case to me where the cleanest solution is to just bring up the built-in windows time sync dialog and let MS handle the issues involved in configuring a time server, etc.

If i had any idea this was going to be so much work (for you) i never would have asked for it, regarding registry settings, etc.
i'm really not sure it is worth the effort pursuing.

My request was predicated on the assumption that tclock could simply invoke the built in internet time sync that is part of every windows installation in the Date and Time Properties dialog.. Or even just bring up that dialog and let me click "Update Now" in the built-in windows dialog.  I was just looking for a menu command in the right click menu that would save me a few clicks to bring up that built-in time-sync function.

it helps to have one monitor in the center for main work, and then the other(s) for just keeping stuff open for reference, so most of the time you are focused on your main center monitor.

Newsletter for April 10th, 2010
"Nesting Feathers"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hi all, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.  April seems like a good month to get into the renewal spirit, wipe the sleep out of ones eyes, and get back in the spirit of living life to its fullest.  Have you embarked on any new projects lately?

In addition to my software projects I've been experimenting again with making a board game or two.. The one thing that never ceases to surprise me is how often what seems like a good set of rules on paper does not translate into a fun game.  I think it's just another example of the value of putting ideas into practice, and the importance of being humble when estimating your own ability to translate an idea into something real in one shot.

The bottom line is: Don't just sit in your room dreaming up with ideas -- pick one idea and follow it through to a complete implementation and evaluation.  And then tell us about it on the forum!

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

3. April Discounts

This month we have a discount on the VTrain vocabulary trainer, as well as copies of VTrain and the Linkman Pro bookmark organizer to give away.

4. DC Member Software Updates and Mini-reviews

This month a few new member-written mini-reviews were posted on the forum, as well as some new coding snack utilities and software updates.

5. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Let's find out..

6. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

7. Hardware Help

While we talk a lot more about software than hardware on the DC forum -- that doesn't mean we don't have some pretty serious discussions about computer hardware and building custom computers.  The last month has seen a bit more of this than usual, maybe because people are getting that new-year itch to build a new computer..

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into to sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

9. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

10. Developer's Corner

If you're not a programmer, don't let the title of this section scare you away - there is likely something of interest to you here! It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

11. Authors Announce Their Software

We don't often include it in the monthly newsletter, there is a section on the forum where shareware and other developers are welcome to post occasional announcements about new software they have been working on.  Usually these are posts by non-regulars, and we require that the poster state clearly their relation to the company; we prefer if the author of the software is the one that posts.

12. News You Can Use

DC Member Stephen66 has been filling in for Ehtyar in posting weekly summaries of interesting tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  He even forced me to create an archive page where you can browse through past editions.

it's a little on the easy side, but this is the *perfect* first TD game for your little ones because the options are so straightforward.. if they can come to terms with the idea that the penguins are the bad guys.

I thought the above would signal FARR to reload the plugin?
it should.

try selecting each of those duplicates, and see what the "Installation To:" directories are.. are they all different? that may point you to the duplicate .dcupdate files.  if they aren't different, let me know.

This Tower Defense games has some of the smoothest and nicest looking cartoony graphics of any tower defense game i've seen.  Enemies have to go around towers as well, making for some nice strategy.  Looks good

Find And Run Robot / Re: how to reset search heuristics?
« Last post by mouser on April 08, 2010, 04:02 PM »
you could reset everything back to defaults by exiting the program, renaming your FindAndRunRobot.ini to FindAndRunRobot_OLD.ini
and let the program recreate the default settings.

this will clear any customizations you have made to search directories, etc.

you might also see if this helps: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=20503.0

just copy your FindAndRunRobot.ini file from one computer to the other (note that the location of this file is in Documents and Settings\ subfolder on vista/win7 and in the program files\ subdirectory on winxp).

make sure to copy it while FARR is not running.

Here is a big clue:

Click to reveal big clue on how to solve
Draw a 2x2 table that solves for 2 player with 2 cards each, numbered 1-4, and look at the geometric pattern in your table, now reproduce for more players and cards.

16699
ah ok i have a solution (works for any number of players and even number of cards per person, i.e. rows).. shall i wait to post it to give you guys a chance to come up with solution ?  ;)
16700
I could use some help with this and i'm not sure where to start other than just playing with rows and columns on paper -- thought maybe someone here might have an idea.

I've been working on a board game idea recently, and i have an idea i want to play with regarding bidding.

I think the best way to describe what i want is a table of numbers, with X rows and Y columns, such that:
  • No number in a cell is ever repeated
  • The columns all sum to the same number (doesn't matter what that number is)

The numbers in cells should be positive, and ideally as low as possible, but that is not critical.

To help motivate what this is for, i was thinking of giving each player a set of "bidding cards", where every card is unique and therefore there can never be a tie, but where every player has the same average bidding strength.  So in my table above, each column represents the bidding cards of a single player.

To make it more concrete, i'm thinking of something like 6 players (columns) and 10-15 bidding cards (rows) each.

Any thoughts?
