can i remind people that one of the reasons we went to all the trouble to set up the donationcredits micro-donation thing on donationcoder is so we could say thanks to people like brahman by making it easy for all of us to send a few credits to them.  so click on the gold coin next to his name to say thank you and let him know that you appreciate his efforts, and to encourage more of this kind of stuff!  the least we can do is buy him a pair of sunglasses to shield out the blinding light in his room full of scanners.

there are going to be things where such tiny payments are useful.. donationcoder won't benefit from those things since i think only really specialized services are going to really have use for such tiny micro-transactions.  i certainly have no plans on making any of my programs charge small amounts on a per usage basis -- i'm a fan of the lifetime no-nag license concept.

i think the benefit to most indie developers if such financial services take off is what it will to increase the userbase of people who feel comfortable just clicking to donate money and pay something, and lay the groundwork for broad acceptance of paying for things this way.

The donationware concept would be hugely more successful if everyone on the planet had an account and feels completely comfortable clicking a quick button to quickly send $1, $5, $10, $50 bucks to pay for something, confident that they aren't putting themselves at risk, and can get a refund if they change their mind.

Making such actions easy and safe is the key.  But the success of large scale micro-transaction services like this one are an important step towards moving us down this path, so more power to it!

Newsletter for August 13th, 2010
"Heat Waving"

1. Newsletter Editorial

It's 96 degrees out here and time again for another DC newsletter.  The heat seems to be getting to everyone because we've had a couple of arguments flair up on the forum lately, but things seem to be calming down now that the weekend is here.

If you have any interest in scanning software, the one thing you don't want to miss in this newsletter is the link to the giant review of VueScan written by a DC member last week, with some serious scanning tips.  We're also giving away a few copies of VueScan this month to celebrate the review.

DC member skwire has also been up to his usual tricks and has released a bunch of new free utilities based on user requests that you can download.  See the Coding Snacks section below for the new ones, including a cool context menu extension that lets you right-click on an image file and show it's geo-tagged location in your web browser.  This edition of the newsletter also has a big section devoted to announcements from DC members about software projects and blogs that they are working on -- we love to highlight member projects so don't be shy about posting on the forum if you are working on something interesting.

I was also thinking we might take this newsletter as an opportunity to encourage people to check out some of the posts on the forum that have not yet had any replies, and see if any are worth commenting on.  Check the link below for a list of all threads which have not yet had a reply posted.

And lastly, let me remind all coders and friends of coders, that we are approaching the final months of the year when our NANY (New Apps for the New Year) event is going to start kicking into high gear.  Join us by pledging to create and release a new application on January 1st of the new year, and become one of the proud custom mug carrying few who have participated. We need more participants -- so spread the word to your coder friends, and and if you are a coder looking for a kick in the pants to get you to finally finish that project that's been sitting half completed on your hard drive, or to finally implement that idea you've been daydreaming about for years, now is the time!

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, regardless of your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

3. DC Stuff: Mini Reviews

New member-written stuff since the last newsletter:

4. Coding Snacks

One of the best areas of our forum is the Coding Snacks section, where people can request small custom free utilities that get written by volunteer coders.

5. DC App Updates, Screencasts, Questions and Answers

A few minor updates this month, but also a few new screencast videos and some questions answered, as well as a nice found blog review of Find and Run Robot:

6. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Let's find out..

7. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware-related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into two sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

9. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

10. Announce Your Software or Service

Although I don't often highlight it in the newsletter, we do have a section of the DC forum where we are happy to have shareware authors post about their latest creations.  While we are always concerned about spam on the forum -- unlike many sites we welcome the participation of shareware authors on our forum, as long as they clearly identify themselves and their relation to the commercial software they are discussing.  This section let's them openly tell us about their stuff and get some feedback.

11. Developer's Corner

If you're not a programmer, don't let the title of this section scare you off - there is definitely something of interest for everyone here! It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

12. NANY 2011

Don't be shy about helping us kick off the NANY (New Apps for the New Year) process early.  If you're a coder, start thinking about some new program you can get working on.  Or, stop by and look for ideas and collaborators and helpers.  If you're not a coder, why not volunteer to help out in other ways, or try to reach out to other coders you know on other sites and see if you can't work together to come up with a great idea for a NANY application.

I'm not sure how much this really solves.  If it's true that the real problem with raising money through micropayments is not the amount but the hassle, then paypal already makes it pretty easy and safe to pay someone if you have a paypal account.  so the question is, will this bring in more users who are not already paypal users.  if not, it doesn't do very much.  the key has to be to have a payment system that EVERYONE has an account on, and everyone feels completely safe using, and that takes no time or effort.  Let's see if they can advance the ball on this -- it would be great if so.

Developer's Corner / Programming prizes on the rise: The risks of entering
« Last post by mouser on August 13, 2010, 04:54 PM »
From a discussion on slashdot today comes this article outlining some of the risks to programmers if they enter programming contests, mostly in terms of losing control of their creations:

This raises questions about the fairness of programming contests in general, particularly in the current economic climate. Contests like the Netflix Prize are sponsored by commercial entities that stand to profit from the innovations produced by the entrants. Those who participate invest valuable time toward winning the prize, but if they fail to meet the deadline (or to produce the leading results) their efforts could go completely unrewarded. Depending on the terms of the contest, however, the sponsor might still be able to make use of the runners-up's innovations -- which, of course, would be a whole lot cheaper than hiring developers...

DesktopCoral / Desktop Coral: Links to write-ups

Nice mention on downloadsquad today

Enter DesktopCoral! This trusty utility isn't new, but that doesn't mean it isn't cool. With a few simple settings, I reserved a space at the bottom of my secondary monitor, which is just right for my widgets. If I want to change the configuration, I just need to drag a couple of sliders and check a couple of boxes. Unlike many customization tools, DesktopCoral's configuration is completely graphical.

I spent exactly two minutes configuring this tool, and it's been running in my system tray, quietly doing its job without a hitch, for over a week now. That's perfect!

Very interesting!

I'm anxious to read more details, and i think the world would be a better place if one of these micro-payment systems takes off and hits the mainstream.

I have written before that i think the key thing is not the "micro" small amount part, but making it trivial, safe, and fast to send money.  PayPal has already gone a long way to doing that, so this could be a nice step forward.

i think all sides have made their cases, and agree it's time to move on.
15815
My memory is that setting any Force option will keep it from being "tamed", because taming by definition means changing its priority to a lower level.

So normally if one sets a process to "Force Below Normal" you are telling Process Tamer: "don't bother watching this and assigning it a low priority when it hogs the cpu, instead just always keep it below normal priority".

Can you give me an example case of when you'd want it forced to something AND at the same time want PT to watch it and reduce its priority to something else when it starts using too much of the cpu?
15816
awesome! thanks for posting about that!

Subsequently I’ve learned of a wonderful, stupendous substitute: FARR (Find And Run Robot). It has it all.  Set  up takes zero time.  The defaults are excellent so you can just run it.  If you want to tweak it, there are more options than on the space shuttle.  And it is wicked fast, and does a lot more than finding your applications, but it does that incredibly well. ... Okay, there’s a lot more, but I love this program already.  You do want/need a license key, which is free, but which reminds you that it would be perfectly okay to make a donation. I did, you should.

i think there are lots of good reasons software shouldn't be patentable, but as the other posters are pointing out, the fact that a computer program can be represented as a number is not one of them :)
15823
Is it possible at all to capture a window that's obscured, whether partially or entirely?
i believe it is -- there is a print-like api command to instruct a window to paint itself to an offscreen buffer.
screenshot captor uses it in some cases, but not all.

what is being asked for may be solvable by skipping any force-foreground call in the minicap code, and ensuring that the print api command is used.  it may not always work but providing an option to try it is worth a try.
15824
there may be a way to add this feature to minicap; i have something else i have to add as well, so maybe i can try.  i'm not sure it will work but it should be easy to try and find out.

Circle Dock / Re: Goodbye all, I'm out of here effective immediately

Markham,

Part of what pains me about this episode is that i have tried hard to be supportive of the original circle dock, and the work you did on it, and the efforts sgtevmckay made on it's behalf. sgtev and i have had so many good talks about it and i've always tried hard to encourage him and praise him for his efforts and be supportive on behalf of the dc community.  i think you guys did a real service by reviving what seemed to be an abandoned project with many users who were hoping for improvements.  i think it was great what you did in improving it, and tried to say so and provide help and encouragement wherever possible.

At some point the download bandwidth on the member server for circle dock started to get very high, and it seemed like something was misconfigured with the member server that was making this problem much worse, and we couldn't figure out how to fix that.  I asked you guys to see if you could find some alternative hosting for the big exe that was causing all the bandwidth -- at least temporarily so we could see for sure whether the bandwidth was really coming from legit downloads or from some foul-up with the server.  we had long talks about this many months ago -- it wasn't part of some plan to hurt you guys, it was simply a matter of wanting to prepare for a worst case scenario where the member server was not going to be able to host the files without running out of allocated bandwidth.  We discussed the many sites that will provide free hosting for the file, and if i thought that you wouldn't be able to find easy free hosting and would have to pay for hosting i would have worked harder with you to find another solution.

I wish you well in whatever direction you take your project and i have no ill will.  It's unfortunate that this whole episode has gotten so out of control because i continue to hope that once you get some perspective from all this you're going to realize that not only have we attempted to do you no wrong, but that quite the contrary we've tried to be supportive of you the whole time -- and the more dramatic this episode gets, the harder it may be for that to happen.  In that vein i'd ask that you not delete your old posts, which causes real confusion to readers, but feel free to edit them to add information that you feel is appropriate.

Ok let's try to wrap this up and get back to normal stuff.. I'd ask everyone to keep respectful and continue posting only if you feel like there is something new you really have to add.  I'll do the same.

[edit] note to mods: as well-meaning as you may be, please refrain from deleting posts for any other reason than if they are spam; even if you find a post offensive, deleting it usually makes the situation worse, and sometimes you just need to let people vent.
