it took me a while to realise it isn't an online dating site. up until that point it just seemed like any other dating thing.

as the site is aimed at women (by the looks of the home page) i'd say the voting page is a jokey bit of fun.

(i was hoping it was a geek dating site as i was hoping to sign-up. mind you, i wouldn't be interested in that - are there any misanthrope dating sites? if not, let's start one, i'll be the first member.)

so, the question is, how do i get your wife to provide the same service for me? (or even how do you get your wife to provide the same service for me?)

edit:
whoops, just reailsed that's the same as jgpaiva's question - i guess we all need to know.

okay, i've had some more ideas for it. (thanks, fenixproductions.)

another method would to be use a remote desktop connection. the remote viewer checks in on your screen at regular intervals and if they see a program or webpage that shouldn't be open (that you've already agreed not to use at specific times) they have the ability to close it.

just like using a personal trainer in the 'real' world. you could even pay for the service. a 'remote monitor person' could be viewing several desktops at a time - thereby keeping the costs down for each individual paying for the service.

if the 'trainee' simply decided not to turn the remote desktop application on then they still have to pay for the service - again, just like in the 'real' world if you hire a personal trainer.

another method:

the util on your machine monitors what programs you are running and sends this information to your 'buddy'. your 'buddy' can send a 'kill program' message to kill any of the programs you agreed not to run (include specific webpages and things in there too).

i suppose no one is ever going to take any of it seriously when they can just find a way to exit the program - so there should be an agreement to pay for services involved. spending money will give the 'trainee' more of an incentive not to abuse the system and just get on with it.

i've no answers to rootkits, etc.

i believe this program would help a lot of procrastinators out there (providing they didn't just find something else to procrastinate about). so, it might be something for this years DC GTD experiment.

the idea is that the util would block you from running certain programs, opening certain files and browsing certain web pages - at certain times of the day that you set.

aha, you say, but i could just turn the util off and then i could gain access to everything that is blocked - so it's useless. which is correct.

the crucial part with this new util is that it is password controlled AND YOU DON'T KNOW THE PASSWORD. instead, you let someone you can trust put the password in for you, and they keep it a secret. any changes you need to make to this blocker util requires you asking the password keeper friend (or relative) to enable the program for you.

if it's a family member (or local friend) they just tap in the password on your keyboard. if it's someone you know online they either enter the password via a remote desktop like connection, OR perhaps send an encrypted file that either acts as a key to unlock the blocker util for a limited period of time, or it contains information to actually make the changes to the blocker util for you.

think of it like the buddy system that's used with other people that have addictions - this is just the computerised version of that.

Edvard, i think the static did kill it. i'd just used a brush over the years on old hardware i didn't really care about - as i never ran into any trouble i got complacent and thought it was a safe method - which is obviously wasn't.

i won't be using any kind of brush in future (except for tickling cranioscopical).

i like the look of those metrovaca but they don't seem to be available in the UK.

maybe i was unlucky, maybe i was dumb (or both).

but i'm pretty sure i've killed one cpu in one machine and almost certainly killed a stick of ram from cleaning out computer cases with a brush (a soft large paint brush).

so i'd be extra careful when you are using those vacuum cleaner attachments with the brushes on them. maybe they aren't meant to be used inside the case.

good point. i somehow forgot to mention that.

correct: there isn't any storyline behind the drawings (perhaps i shouldn't have revealed that). sometimes there are loose ideas that we joke about, e.g. "let's have a series of vehicles with names based on historical figures: vlad the impala, etc." we'll then 'jam' in skype and throw out a list of stupid names until there are a few to play with.

other than that there isn't any planning. i'll just draw something when i have a flash of inspiration. usually the end result isn't anything like i'd expected it to be. as i don't use any reference images, all i concentrate on is drawing something that has correct perspective and looks implausible using current technology. (well, i've used two reference photos so far: a hamster and an impala automobile.)

the vehicles tend to build themselves as they are drawn. better ideas come along as i'm doing them so large bits get rubbed out and something more stupid will be put in its place. then end result is scanned and cleaned up a bit in Photoshop. after that i may go back and erase bits from the original sketch and put new things in knowing that i've got a 'safe' version stored on the computer.

then i email it.

Tim then looks for ways of making the vehicle seem plausible and gives it a purpose. i may offer a suggestion sometimes as to what the vehicle could be, or i might point out a detail that i think is important to write about. mostly, Tim has total freedom to write what he likes. that's where the fun part is for me. i'm always pleasantly surprised by what he writes. it's always more than i could have thought of myself; more detail, more history, more big words. he connects the implausible parts of the vehicle so that they have a purpose which is very satisfying for me to see.

other than that, sometimes i may add an extra line or a paragraph to explain something i think can't be ignored. Tim always gets the tone right and he has evolved the background story into something that 'could' go somewhere. There was never a real story behind the original idea for the website but now i think we have one. hopefully this will become obvious when we try to put it into the illustrated book. at present, there isn't any story for it but i hope that it will manage to explain what the Transportica was all about.

codex transportica:

  • i do a quick sketch when i'm in the mood
  • email it to Tim
  • Tim says: i think i have an idea for that one
  • a few days pass
  • Tim emails me the new text
  • i say: perfect, that fits just right

sometimes Tim will suggest a new vehicle and sometimes i will add a tiny bit to the text. i tend to act as editor to try and keep things in line with my 'grand vision'.

Living Room / Re: media icons - suggestions please.
« Last post by nudone on January 27, 2009, 04:10 AM »
So, nudone (congrats on your 2.500 posts!), what did you do about media icons?

I gave up on the idea of using custom designed icons. i don't need to change many of the default icons so i just customise a few that annoy me.

part of the solution, for me, was that Adobe decided to colour coordinate their icons (exactly like i'd requested in the original post). and, as i use KMPlayer, my media icons have the extension stamped over them.

Here's (a minor) one: I'd like to be able to click on a link on my "Unread posts" page and have the link opened in a new tab. Ditto for the main "Forum" page, actually... it would be nice to be able to keep the Forum page open and have any boards or messages that I click on open in new tabs.

could use a browser that does 'drag and drop' opening. don't think firefox does it. MAXTHON does.

i.e. don't click the link, just click and drag the link away slightly - each dragged link opens in a new tab. i've been reading the 'unread posts' page like that for a long time.

the good thing with how it works is that the new tab opens up behind the current page you are on - so you can quickly go through the list and open the links you want. then just hit 'mark all messages read'.
1489
on the 'unread posts' page, how about moving the select boxes so it's easier to scan through the list and quickly pick them off. if it's possible to move them.

(i remember mouser agreeing with this one back in 2005).

edit:

after 4 years of looking at this page i guess i'm used to it now anyway. so ignore me.

Post New Requests Here / Re: WinFill - better than Aero Snap?
« Last post by nudone on January 12, 2009, 03:23 AM »
i like 'winfill'. nice and quick but it really needs the 'auto resize' to original window size for it to be as useful as 'aerosnap'.

any chance of implementing that Skrommel?

just thought. i made a request to see if jgpaiva could make 'gridmove' work by 'throwing' windows to resize them.

perhaps this could be done with 'winfill'?

the idea was get the same result when dragging to the edge of the screen - but instead you 'throw' the window (using the titlebar) in a particular direction that would determine the size and position of the window.

e.g. throw window to the left - the window resizes to fill the left half of the screen.

the problem being, does autohotkey understand 'throws'?

a throw would be a 'click and hold on title bar, quick drag, release mouse, continue drag direction a little'.

edit:
forgot to say, jgpaiva may try to get the 'throw' idea to work with 'gridmove' but i think it depends on how busy he is.

no one heard of 'gridmove' https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3824.0 around here? the original idea was for resizing the window by dragging to the edge of the screen - but it grew into a program that did far more than that. (i know Skrommel saw the original post as there's a comment about 'ZoneSize'.)

having said that. i thought aerosnap worked well on vista - but it seems to crash. so, i'll give 'winfill' a try.

Skrommel, just wondering, does 'winfill' do the auto resize to original window size when you drag the window back into the center of the screen? that seemed to be one of the best features of 'aerosnap'.

looks to me like BioniX doesn't actually do what this original post was all about. it simple changes the image at timed intervals, I can't see anywhere to set specific times for specific images.

so, it looks like mouser has still created something unique here.
1494
thanks, mecla.

I'll check BioiniX out.

i actually like vista even if there are a few annoyances. some things are just plain stupid though; how to change a file type associated icon.

i'd been trying to find a simple way of doing it without resorting to editing the registry. plenty of result online stating that there isn't really a good way of doing it without buying a util - which seems a bit too much just to change a single setting in windows vista.

i'd been using Creative Elements Power Tools in demo mode to do the job - which is overkill. http://www.creativel...ment.com/powertools/

but after another attempt at finding a better solution today i finally spotted this - and it's free...

"Types" http://types.sourceforge.net/ there doesn't appear to be much info about it, looks like it's created by Evgeny Strunnikov.

seems to work as you'd expect.

types_util.png

(sorry, if it's already been mentioned on the forum, i didn't check.)

i'll give it a go (maybe). i reread "do it tomorrow..." a couple of weeks back so i'm curious as to what's new.

(i've signed up via e-mail.)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it

idea: 'throw' windows across screen to activate gridmove resizing.

(assuming this hasn't been suggested already) click and hold the windows titlebar and 'throw' it in the direction of the zone on the grid that you want to use.

so the direction of the throw determines the resize and final window position.

could work well i think for simple grid layouts.

would autohotkey be able to detect 'throws', i.e. click, hold, move mouse quickly and release hold.

(sorry if i've already said this idea before or just repeated someone else's post - it seems kind of familiar.)

Curt, can you do that in any folder?

i've been trying to do it with several folders and i can't even see the 'mark all non-images' option let alone the 'hide' option.

have you got the UAC enabled?
