Hi,

If you gimme the name of the API that allows to retrieve the Status of a running program, i can make a sample to demonstrate easily how to do this job :)
Err... sorry, no idea...

. . . and if it could automatically click "save" when the program pops up asking if you'd like to, it'd be even smarter :D
Hehe... I would use it only for programs that don't need to save anything. :)

Hehe... I don't know how old she is, but I imagine the worst  ;)

The biggest problem I see here is using WMP ;D

Hi,

I'd love a little tool to automatically close certain programs after I haven't used them for x minutes. I'm not sure if that's an easy task or not, but I could really use such a tool to auto-close some programs!

It would be perfect if I could specify the number of minutes for each program/exe after which IdleClose should kick in.

Ah, tray icon(s) looking MUCH better now :)

But what does "enable" do? Will it disable the screensaver completely when unchecked?

Thanks, works perfectly! :)

What does it need two tray icons for? One looks like a keyboard, the other like a blurry notepad. Clicking it once toggles "enabled", but what for?

Oops, I totally forgot to thank you :-[

Now I'm searching for a screensaver that just turns the monitor off - but wasn't able to find a (freeware) saver to do so... who could help?

Don't you just LOVE IT when ads somehow match the content on a site? :D

Living Room / Fon - Google, Skype and the chicken-and-egg problem
« Last post by brotherS on February 07, 2006, 03:51 PM »
[...] in an innovative new Internet access network called Fon.

The company, founded by Spanish entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, aims to build a network of WiFi hotspots far larger than those from companies like T-Mobile and Swisscom, none of which have more than 30,000 hotspots worldwide.

Fon aims to exceed that in its first year, and to have one million hotspots in four years. It hopes to achieve this by getting individuals and businesses to contribute their own hotspots to the network in exchange for getting access wherever they go. [...]

Nice find, great ratings! Added it to my FileForum watch list :)

I saw several LAN IM tools over the years, but nothing looking as good. I wonder if anyone on DC uses it?

General Software Discussion / Re: Gmail Adds New Chats Feature
« Last post by brotherS on February 07, 2006, 02:48 AM »
Why'd you add chat to Gmail?

Communications these days can be frustrating. You exchange a bunch of emails with someone when really, you'd rather just get an answer instantly. You use one program for your email, and another one (or two or three) for IM. You can't remember who said what to you where. And sometimes you can't even remember who wallaby385 in your buddy list is.

Gmail's chat features address a lot of these problems. You don't have to use another program or switch between email and IM--it's all on the same interface. The friends you're already emailing the most show up in your Quick Contacts as themselves, not the cryptic IM names they chose six years ago. And you can save your chats so you never have to lose something important just because someone told it to you over IM.
Like almost everything Google does, this sounds like a good idea to me. I'm already using Miranda for my IM and IRC needs, but this could be a nice addition!

Thanks for the initial work! I don't mind if the script just kills Winamp, but I need to make it work only from STARTTIME to ENDTIME. Guess I'll have to check IdleMute's code...
1389
but i don't know anything about whether its well founded, it's just a gut level reluctance to having the hard drive going insane moving stuff around like mad more than it has to.
I'm defragging HDs at least once a week (I like the file structure to be clean and access to be fast) and NEVER had a single problem because of that.

I wonder what would be the best way to implement "after 30 minutes of IdleMuting, kill winamp.exe" - any ideas?
If skrommel prefers not to add that to IdleMute, maybe make a new tiny tool for this?

What I want is basically this: if I happen to fall asleep while Winamp is still running (so, like IdleMute, this should only work in a specified time-frame), I want it to be automatically killed/closed after x minutes. I like that skrommel's IdleMute only mutes the PC and doesn't immediately close Winamp, so if I'm at the phone I could just push my mouse to unmute the PC again.

Maybe WinampKiller could use a different approach than IdleMute though, feel free to suggest/code anything :)

And maybe http://www.myplugins...nfo/activewinamp.htm (thanks to jgpaiva for finding this) could help you?

I am currently developing a small app as a tray clock replacement, mainly because I want one too. I keep my taskbar hidden and needed something that is easy to read.

You can download a beta of my freeware clock at my site. Keep in mind it's a beta and I am still working on it. Keep checking back from time to time to get the latest version of it.

features currently include:
  • always on top
  • customizeable size
  • customizable colors
  • option to remove tray clock
  • stopwatch
  • countdown timer
  • hourly chime
  • ToDo List
  • small utility to aid in making alphabetical lists
  • display system uptime
  • date as tooltip
  • copy date to clipboard
  • copy system uptime to clipboard
  • copy current time to clipboard
  • can not accidently be dragged off the screen
  • remembers user settings
  • remembers where on the screen you placed it on last run
  • menu accessable by right clicking either clock or tray icon

http://www.appsapps.info/dclock2.php

Thanks app103, sounds promising! I didn't test it (yet), if anyone else wants to do it in here feel free :)

Also, since it isn't on http://fileforum.betanews.com/ (yet?), you can use this thread to notify us about new versions/features of your program.

Could you perhaps add a screenshot of the options? And how much RAM does it need? CPU load should be low, right?

General Software Discussion / Re: Winamp Advanced Control
« Last post by brotherS on February 06, 2006, 06:26 AM »
I'm using Winamp Advanced Control too, although I mostly use Winamp's global hotkeys to control it. But it's nice to have Winamp's volume always visible in the tray, and you also see the status.

In combination with this plugin I suggest the great Toaster plugin for Winamp: http://www.winamp.co...etails.php?id=138586

You'll see it pop up every time a new track is played (works for online radio streams too). You can set it to display a Toast with the volume being shown whenever you change the volume, very handy IMHO and works great together with IdleMute!

Here are a few alternatives of how it COULD look:

1394
Some years ago, I started to name my documents in a way I could easy find them again later, so in my case searching is based on organizing - and vice versa.
1395
We all know what a mess your pc can be ... you're looking for a file, that's somewhere and you can't find it.
Since I'm using Locate (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0) and the Google Sidebar (http://desktop.google.com/en/) I'm having no more problems finding files!
:)

I understand you did ask for a different approach, but did you try those tools yet?

« Last post by brotherS on January 30, 2006, 09:37 AM »
Allen and brotherS: how can you type so fast? You must have a special keyboard, right? Or your keyboard only lasts for one month? ;)
Hehe... no, just a 'natural' keyboard - that's in use for more than a year already now and still looks pretty good...
;)

I just tried the test again:

Your score: 360 keys per minute ~ 72 words per minute
Language/mode: de
Ranking: That was fast - you can still improve, though.
Comparison: 17% of registered TyperA users using this language have typed a better result; 83% have a lower or equal result.
