-thanks a lot, diva. I was so ecstatic to find no symptoms, that I simply didn't think to call for an ambulance, but merely made a normal reservation after the holiday at my private doctors', via her homepage. This was stupid, very stupid, because there is nothing there can be done, if one is not at the hospital, and she could not even write down my incident as being Real Life, because of the lack of evidence.

Wow, Curt.  Sounds like you've had a bad day/week/month.

-yeah, diva, you're right. Two blood clots, one in each leg, two days before Eastern. I was lucky, no symptoms, except for pains in the muscles - but it clearly was reflected in my mood. To my defence, I did answer the question about my 4 top go-to programs ;-)

... programs that are absolutely at the top of your daily list that you'd be annoyed not to have around. The trap here is that second tier that are useful but only on occasion.

1 only: Lynx (switch from Firefox) http://lynx.isc.org/ https://en.wikipedia...rg/wiki/Lynx_browser

-were you trapped ("useful but only on occasion")? How can a text browser ever be "at the top of your daily list"? It's not even able to really tell what it looks like itself, because it cannot display pictures!! Also, extremely many pages on the Internet will not make sense if "displayed" in Lynx. It must be used for something other than the "normal" Internet. This browser is a complete mystery to me.

----------

Almost all of my favourite programs from the past have been abandoned, so I guess my favourites of the present also may be abandoned some time in the future - so what if I like (FastStone Capture) this (Pale Moon) or that (jetAudio was updated!!) program (Dynamic-Photo HDR 5)? Tomorrow will be a different story.

If an audiophile truly wants "as it was intended in the studio" sound, all they need to do is cruise eBay for some Yamaha NS-10s which were the most common studio near-field monitors for years.  That is, the speakers the engineers and producers listened to when doing recording, mixing and mastering.
That's not really true.  Yamaha NS-10 speakers have a harsh sound that tends to exaggerate sound defects.  That makes them useful for monitoring certain types of recordings because you're more likely to spot problems before committing them to the can.

I agree with xtabber on this.

General Software Discussion / the END of CFi ShellToys
« Last post by Curt on April 19, 2014, 05:18 PM »
In the end of December 2012, a copy of the original British CFi ShellToys version 7.4 came out of Russia. It wasn't malware, but a copy. I know nothing about who, how or why, but since then, there have been no updates, and now the entire company has vanished. The new owner ("Rob Young") may be campaigning for some Usual Suspect-title, because "Rob Young" is associated with about 105 other domains!

Soft Organizer is an excellent and very easy to use application to install and uninstall programs completely. Applications can be installed with tracking, which means the tool records all places in the system where the installed program leaves traces. In the future, these data allow removing that program completely, including all leftovers that may stay in the system after regular uninstalling using the Control Panel.

Soft Organizer is also equipped with a search mechanism to find traces of programs that were not tracked automatically. For programs you prefer to keep installed, Soft Organizer can check for available new versions and notify you about them with a special symbol in the application list. The built-in rating system provides a way to locate and get rid of unneeded and low-quality products.
newbig.jpg
CAPABILITIES

  • SEARCH FOR TRACES (RESIDUES) OF THE UNINSTALLED PROGRAM
Allows you to remove traces of programs that were not tracked while installing (powered by the Full Uninstall technology).

  • TRACKED INSTALLATION OF PROGRAMS
Installs apps and tracks changes in the system to enable removing tracked elements later (powered by the Full Uninstall technology).

  • NEW! BUILT-IN PROGRAM RATING
Program rating allows you to evaluate installed applications. The rating is calculated based on the total number of users who have removed this app from the computer shortly after installation.

  • PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
If the purpose of some program in the list looks vague, you can view its description by clicking the special question icon near the program title (not available for all programs).

  • CHECK FOR NEW VERSIONS
For installed programs there’s an option to check for newer versions of a program. This allows you to keep applications up-to-date, as well as to eliminate bugs and problems caused by the outdated versions.

  • AUTOMATIC RESTORE POINTS
Automatic creation of restore points during the removal of application residues indemnifies the system against any possible emergency.

new1big.jpg

  • REMOVE MULTIPLE PROGRAMS AT ONCE
You can easily remove even multiple applications in Soft Organizer by simply selecting all programs you don’t need anymore and clicking "Uninstall".

  • "SILENT" PROGRAM INSTALLATION
For those setup packages that support silent install, you can install applications in the "no questions asked" mode in one click.

  • EXPORT THE LIST OF INSTALLED PROGRAMS TO HTML
When you contact the support staff of a company, they may ask you about the programs installed on your computer. You can easily get such a list in a few clicks. The list is saved as an HTML file that is easy to open and to read.

  • SORTING AND GROUPING OF THE LIST
The list of programs can be sorted by various parameters (install date, tracking status, title, and others) for instant search for given apps in the list.

  • PROGRAM QUICK SEARCH FUNCTION
With quick search, you can find a desired application almost immediately, as long as you know its title or a portion of it. The list dynamically shortens as you type the text in the search box.

  • AGENT TO DETECT INSTALLER LAUNCHES
The Agent allows you to detect if an installer is launched and initiate installation tracking without manually starting Soft Organizer.

  • BUILT-IN AUTOMATIC UPDATE MECHANISM
Soft Organizer automatically updates to new versions. You don’t need to visit the website of the program or download or install the tool manually. You simply click the Update button, and the program does the rest.

What's new in 4t Tray Minimizer 5.52 Free/$20 Pro?
-4t

Now it is at version 6: http://www.4t-niagar...om/tray_history.html, and the size of this release candidate "6.04" has grown to 1.72MB - but don't we all grow when we get older. There are still two versions, free and Pro (still $20).

The homepage has not "yet" been updated to display version 6, it is still saying version 5. I don't know if I am fast or if he is slow. I do know that 4t Tray Minimizer Pro is a really fine and useful program, but I wrongfully never trusted it to be maintained, so I haven't purchased the lifetime license:

I changed the number of downloadable pages to "2", pictures only, and only if sized larger than 1000x500 pixels - and suddenly the total number of pictures via the same page was a mere 55 => which took up 51MB on my PC when downloaded. Yet, the memory usage was 1½ GB! At first it was acceptable 350MB, but I waited a minute, and it rose to 1373MB!!!

FoxySpider is (...) a very handy tool if you want to investigate a site and take a look at all its images. (...)
As a test, after you have installed it, go to http://www.google.com/intl/en/about/ and right-click on the page and invoke FoxySpider. Interesting result.

I went to http://www.washingto...8_gallery.html#item0 to see if FoxySpider could get the Russian austronaut picture that my normal favourite (Bulk Image Downloader) couldn't. After a long freezing, it could. Bravo!

HOWEVER, there was a but, (a frozen butt?), and it really was a huge, enormous, gigantic but: The accumulated memory usage was 3710MB ! Yes: three (3) point (.) seven (7) GIGA bytes (GB) memory usage !!!!!!! No wonder it froze!

BTW, when I've got a million windows open and want to close them all at once, is there a shortcut command for that?
If you still have the default grouping enabled, you can right click the group stack is the taskbar and select 'Close group'. You will get a batch of 'Close all tabs?' prompts but can select 'Always close all tabs' to avoid that.

^seems what he was asking for in the first place. Where were you?  :P

Your timing is quite okay:

Changelog for CloseAll v2.0 (March 15, 2014):
  •    New fully redesigned user interface
  •    Added installer and uninstaller for your convenience
  •    Full support for Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP

I’ve found that when multitasking I’m often looking for a “Close all except this and this” feature for application windows – something very simple, but more advanced than “Close other tabs” in modern internet browsers. That’s why I decided to re-write my old CloseAll.

What can be easier than a task list with check boxes and OK button? Just select apps you want to close and click OK. It’s CloseAll v2.0
-CloseAll

CloseAll (“Close all except this and this”) v. 2.0: http://www.ntwind.co...-implementation.html
Freeware.

NOTE: In order to display information about UAC elevated processes on Windows Vista and above, CloseAll requires to be installed in the system %ProgramFiles% directory.

General Software Discussion / Duplicate Video Search
« Last post by Curt on March 18, 2014, 03:02 AM »
And for those who may not be aware of Duplicate Video Search:
http://duplicatevideosearch.com
http://duplicatevide...arch.com/how-to-use/

Yet another Bolide product, so I cannot say if it ever will be updated.
But it still is brand new and well working.
Modified: Only now do I notice my copy calls itself version 16 ! But, ehm... how can a version "16" be so different from normal programs, lacking both this and that normal feature? The user's graphical interface is abnormal, to say the least.

Anyway, the scanning's end result is fine
- and should be, because this is not freeware, but $30

Duplicate Video Search

Step 4: Specify video indexing and matching options (optional)

First, you need to specify how many seconds of each video should be indexed. The longer this interval is, the more accuratelly duplicate videos will be detected (there will be less false positives). However, it takes more time to index long intervals, we recommend to find some optimum or keep default value (3 seconds).

Enable “Skipe first 3 minutes” option if you are going to organize a movie collection. Movies can have similar beginnings (intro of a movie company), so to avoid wrong detections, our program allows to start processing only from 3rd minute of a video (after all intros).

“Fast video reading” option makes video reading 2-3 times faster by ansyncing video and audio. Unfortunatelly some DirectShow codecs may be unstable in that circumstances and lead to crash. Disable “Fast video reading” option in case you faced smth. like this.

Adjust “Sensitivity” slider to regulate how close the detected duplicates should be. It is recommended to change this option after running a first scan, in case there are too many false detections or vise versa. Second scan is usually pretty fast, cause Duplicate Video Search stores all indexes to the cash and so does not have to repeate video indexing twice.

Some video duplicates can be misaligned in time, i.e. same momemnt can take a place on 2:03 on a first video and and on 2:07 on a second one. To accept this, set “Max shift” value to 5 seconds.

Step 5: Start retrieval

Click the “Search” button to start retrieval. Duplicate Video Search will scan the selected folders for duplicate video files. Found clips are compared against each other and grouped together if they have similar content.

Since there are many video formats in the world, our software determines duplicates on the basis of the visual content of files. For this, the program processes each file and generates it`s short signature which is compared against signatures of other files. This process is also known as video fingerprinting.

To index video, Duplicate Video Search processes only limited number of seconds of each video and stores a calculated signature in cache, so that next time you need to organize video files, the program can re-use cached signatures and process only new clips.

Columbo, Quincy, Perry Mason, Jim Rockford and Jonathan & Jennifer Hart all hunted killers, really many killers, in Los Angeles. But Oxford is so much smaller than L.A. that the murder rate per capita is much higher in Oxford. In fact there were so many murders in these areas that TV series were made about it. Detective series.

Come to think of it, Cabot Cove in New England (USA) may have had even more murders. They were all solved by an amateur detective named Jessica Fletcher. My mother liked her, but I liked the British detectives better.

Television detectives, kalos. Made Up television detectives.

Not overly fond of TED, nor many of the sponsors, but that does not invalidate all the content.

^yes, it does.

God stated it already some 3.000 years ago in Job's Book in the Bible;
if the heart of a story is a lie, then all of the story is a lie.

There may be very little in life where I agree with Renegade, but TED is one.
