I'm usually far more concerned about drawing the eye to the appropriate places, and if I have to use clashing girly pastel colors to get the proper effect, I will.

Requires some breakthrough in solid-state memory technology - it's still way too expensive
It is coming down in price reasonably quickly. Round here a 240GB SSD runs just under $300. Not cheap but not prohibitive either. Breakthroughs like Graphene unlock huge potential.

Couldn't agree more!

Do you remember when an error in the newspaper caused an outcry?

Off topic a bit (who me?) but one thing that really annoys me is a library book containing errors that someone has corrected, in ink, by crossing out the offending part and writing in the correct form.

Stick the drive into a different machine?

I really don't think that this utility will do the job but it just might be worth a shot. Haven't used it myself, saw a reference to it recently when I was having a bit of trouble myself.

Could you back up the files from one drive but restore them to the other?

On the first pass, I failed to realize that I'd have to increase the grid row height by as much was required.  :-[

The ability to set larger fonts is very much appreciated — helps a lot!

Gee whiz! Not only did you respond but you were thoughtful enough to preset it with my favourite colours and fonts.

How did you know?

I'm still running one of the old Pioneer SCSI CD drives quite nicely and several Plextor DVD's.  ;D

FWIW, one system here has two identical LG drives that gave no trouble, so my newest box has a pair of LG's as well. I'm told that W7 has trouble with identical DVD drives (XP sure didn't) so the pair that I now have are very slightly different.

I have actually thought about packing the zip-compatible installs in a way such that if you unpacked the files, it would start by default in portable mode -- i should do that.

As for the other thing -- unfortunately it doesn't look like running portably helps this weird locked database file problem..

I had the locked database stuff a couple of times. I'm going now to avoid it like the plague — a sure trigger for disaster.

That works very nicely and hands stuff out for processing by an editor that has many years' worth of Rexx macros built into it.
-cranioscopical (October 10, 2011, 05:39 PM)

I'm not sure I follow you. I thought the point of this kind of tool was to avoid using the editor itself, while gaining extra benefit from scripts already written for it.  That is, instead of loading your editor, you'd run your scripts with a free-standing REXX interpreter via CHS.  Is that what you meant?

Well a couple of things...

First, my comment was intended simply to say "it works". Mouser had just enabled the ability to do that very thing and I was trying it out.

Second, I fully understand and accept your point but, for me at least, the mechanism can be used either way. Calling Rexx directly is certainly an option. For new stuff I'd probably do that and use whatever is the most suitable scripting tool. It just so happens, however, that the editor I use most has as its language a native version of Rexx (KEXX) with internal functions that aren't in standard Rexx. I could re-invent the wheel but I've used the editor for the past 30 years or so and it's now jam packed with quirky stuff that suits my workflow. Execution time is of no consequence to me; I don't process vast files, today's machines are so fast, the tasks I perform now so trivial...

Basically I'm:
  • set in my ways
  • lazy
  • uncaring these days about how something gets done, as long as it is done

On W764 I have CH+S open at its main window and then minimized and ALSO totally inaccessible. The only way out is to kill it off.

It looks as if part (but only part) of the problem might be tied into the 'can't make modal visible' issue, some sort of offshoot of which could be why I can't get CH+S to show up at all — other than on the task bar.

I too would appreciate some control over fonts.

Take pity on a poor old user! When stuff gets too small, my only recourse is to change spectacles — that requires first finding the correct pair; they're usually in some far off reaches of the house deliberately blending in with the background.

Enough pathos to motivate?  ;)

@SJ

Thanks for the insights. If you need a beta tester for the check printing just shoot me a machine and some stock  ;)

The idea would be to create all the graphics for the buttons in one large single background image - all carefully arranged, of course, so that the positions matched the transparent buttons above.
You're thinking of something like a background prepared from a psd with one 'icons' layer and another layer (or multiple layers) with only the text above that? That locks out multiple-state buttons but that doesn't matter a lot to me. Sometimes I'd like to see 'down' or 'up' but usually it's obvious from context.

What a pain about the delay with your machine! Then there'll be the faffing around getting it set up the way you want it to be. Win7 pretty much forced me to change the way I set up machines and I still find myself going for hotkeys that 'don't do that' anymore.

Thanks for the update, Ath! Any additional 'safety checks' are welcome.

Just out of curiosity, did you reboot after making the copy??
Thanks for chiming in. You betcha I rebooted.

(Hint: I'm pondering the cause of the unspecified Raw Port entry in the SS).
I've been carrying that on the books for quite some time.

BTW, after my first, failed attempt to do what I wanted — post reboot — I completely removed Canon drivers, started up again, had the OS 'find' the printer and then sent the install to fresh-from-Canon drivers. That left me with one perfectly working instance of the printer. On the next cycle I tried adding another instance and got the 'stacked' result (all on one icon) but both instances responded to changes in either one. At that point, after looking around the web and seeing that others had similar issues, I posted here and awaited the golden flow of combined wisdom. When I saw that Tomos had his setup working I took the steps detailed in my post previous to this. To me, the fact that the final go round worked implies that I missed something along the way (not totally unheard of  ;D). I don't understand why it happened — did the OS treat the Canon initially as a network printer? —  and I'm too idle to rip out the whole thing and go round yet again in order to research it.

Also, some of the universal printer drivers try to be an all in one single driver that handles all print devices by manufacturer X ... Which could be why the Canon(s) grouped-up on you.
Interesting. Tomos has the same grouping with his Canon but I've seen that others with other makes have the same phenomenon; dk if those are using the type of 'universal brand' driver to which you refer.

The grouping doesn't bother me at all. I simply want to pick a 'printer', from any drop-down, that will behave as I want with no intervening steps.
1246
FWIW, I'm pretty sure I used the "Add a new printer" method for this (I was unable to make a copy of the printer). It showed same as your's above - in sub-menu under printers, but as seperate printer in print dialogue. But it *does* work here.
Again FWIW also with a Canon printer - connected per usb cable.
Hmm… that rather confirms what I suspected, that the problem exists between the chair and the keyboard.

EDIT
See previous message

Thanks for the help, folks. It was useful knowing that this had been done properly, which made me re-review what I'd done  :-[
1247
Is it a wrieless printer or are you connecting with a USB cable?
It's both but I use USB

If it is a USB cable have you tried clicking Add a new printer and adding a new copy of that printer?
I have

Not sure how you can do that with a network printer (Windows seems to just recognise that it is the same printer).
I'll try something different with printui (viz. printui /il but pointing that at a fresh copy of the driver, not the copy that's installed)

EDIT
And… that worked. Should have worked the first time, picking up the installed driver, so I must have stuffed it up.
1248
Does your printer driver not have a built-in preset or setting memory management function? Or do you just want to make it a little quicker to access something like that?

- Oshyan
Thanks for the response; the latter.

Does anybody know how to set up, under W7, multiple instances of a printer, each using its own set of parameters — and in a way that works?

E.g. for the same printer:
One definition might print on plain paper, fed from one source, and in draft mode.
One definition might print on photo paper, fed from a different source, and in highest-quality mode.

Under XP one simply made a copy of a printer listed in the devices section and then set the preferences for that copy.

After some fiddling, I made a copy of a printer under W7. Then I set one copy to params a and the other to params b. Both 'printers' appear but one is on a sub-menu of the printer icon (see image).

Printers.png

To my chagrin, both variants print with the params of the later of the two to be changed — whichever that might be. Despite being able to select one or the other from any printer dialog, each produces the same result.
