this is cool
I even like the fonts used by default!
And it indents! (UPDATE: Not in SMF forums bbcode)
The nice thing is that you can use shortcuts for example to link to places!

This is far from being the dreamed windows live writer for forum posts that I wanted, but it's good enough.
You can do the stupid font changes (UPDATE: Not in SMF forums bbcode) that some people like so much (i.e. internet marketers).

It has some nice editor features (like balancing brackets). Just pressing F2 gives you a preview of your post, saving you the pain of waiting a few miliseconds for a client/server interaction! :)

One thing I hate is that intellicomplete doesn't work on java apps, so I'm out of luck. Well, it doesn't work with opera either (damn opera closedness of hell!), so I'm not losing much.

This looks like one of those apps that stays always open in my desktop.
With any luck, my future posts will be better looking :)

well, getting worse.
There's no hibernation tab in power options anymore!
I'm searching for solutions.
I think I installed this hotfix:
for a discussion see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095
(the hotfix has a somewhat unhelpful title but refers to this very problem for people with 2Gb of memory); I'm installing it again and rebooting just in case.
1003
My laptop just doesn't like hibernation.
And now, not even standby.

This is a mystery to me...

I have checked the box 'allow hibernation' in power options as suggested in a previous thread.

Now this checkbox is grayed out!
The only thing I have done is to remove admin privs. from the main user (the one who is currently logged in).

Worse, often when I send the computer to standby, it does everything 'as if' it worked, then when I pull it out of the suitcase it's burning hot and I see that it wasn't on standby... really dangerous. I see the message"

"Insufficient resources to complete the windows API"

I have > 4.2 Gb free on the OS partition, and 2gb of memory, so space should not be a problem. What other resources could windows be talking about here?

Worse yet, in power options > advanced, I have the box 'prompt for password...' unchecked,... yet it keeps asking me for a password after coming back from standby! I hate that.

Any idea how to fix this? The grayed out hibernate checkbox is weird!

amarok is pretty good, Not sure I'd say better than the commercial alternatives...

I managed to mistype the name of the program I suggested :), it's actually called rapidreader.

RE: autocompletion.
Yes, we need to distinguish between shorthand expansion (which is what tinjaw was describing) and autocompletion, which is completely different.

We have raised this point before.
A text expander is, for example:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2631.0
This in NOT an autocompleter.

Most people are confused by this. Here is an example on how confusing this might be:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5918.0

The thread starts with discussion on autocompleters, and then it moves to text expanders and worse, launchers like direct access. This is NOT what an autocompleter does.

An autocompleter learns from what you type, and makes you type faster, period. This is not a spell checker. In fact, if you continuously misspell a word, it will learn that misspelling and SUGGEST it :(

It's not a collection of shorhands. you type as you would normally. If you ignore the suggestions, then it'll just work as usual.

I find it really useful, and have trouble accepting that people do not get any advantage of it. If you tried it for a short time, you owe it to yourself to try it some more, until it's a habit.

Tc ultima prime 3.1 released.
Now it makes breakfast too.
1007
also, you unix types, could you really say that autocompletion is a bad move in the command line?
1008
Well, what a bunch of weirdos we are :)
Of those who hated completion, which program did you try?
I went back from vista to XP just because intellicomplete wouldn't work on vista. It's that important for me (although the move back to XP has proven wise for many other reasons!).

How about speed reading?
The best program I have found is speedReader
http://www.rapidreader.com/

But still, it has plenty of practical problems for daily use. it doesn't undestand formatting, so it'll read headers and footers as main text, etc.
1010
wow, I wasn't expecting this.
I was annoyed by autocompleters before, but got used to it in about a week.

Abbreviations I don't like, because it takes time to set them up and update them. But maybe most people think that autocompleters are " annoying beyond belief"...
1011
For those who answered  'I write plenty fast, so I don't need an autocompleter':

The question is not whether you need it, but whether it brings any advantage at all. So if you hear someone saying "we don't need  an autocompleter," that use of the word "need" is a sign they're not even thinking about the question right.

If you 'write plenty fast', it takes very little thinking to realize that writing faster is better.

So that option shouldn't be there: it reflects a misconception.

Imagine that you are in business. And you found a area where you can invest (say google adwords) that costs you say $1 per click, but makes you $1.1 in profits.

If you find something like that -rare-, it takes a special kind of stupid to put a cap to it, and limit the amount of money you allocate to it. But in fact, this is what many people in business do!

Is this metaphor clear? It must be shocking to realize this...
1012
I think this is a great feature.
It would make ssc compete with those tracking programs that can capture your window every X seconds, and them show that to you as a movie at the end of the day.

It's pretty illuminating to see where your time goes...
1013
ok, ok, maybe I should have said 'autocomplete in places other than code'. everybody uses autocomplete with code, what I mean is to use autocomplete with any text you write (emails, word processor docs, etc).

Thanks.
That's a weird procedure, I must say.
1015
Well, looks like intellicomplete is a favorite around here, with bugs and all.
It takes a while to get used to it, more so when it shows the options next to the cursor.
I actually wonder how much of the general population would use these if they were made a lot more friendly and efficient.

mouser, I need to get a poll going, and cannot find any icon in my post form.
Am I enabled?

Thanks

But can you add several dozen plugins to FF -to make it usable and useful- and still write the resulting chunk on the MoBo? (same for linux, mindyou). If this is a read-only thing, that can only be written with a special procedure (like the BIOS) it won't be very useful...

Hell, it may even blow other software, king on different categories, out of the water!

It could be an alternative to oneNote/outlook for calendar.
It'd be ideal to collect snippets of code (dunno what the best software is for this...

If I can request a feature...
try to mimic oneNote's way of doing outlines (i.e., keep indentation on a text file).

This program looks great!
keep development up, and you'll have lots of users.

It blows old favorite (and now abandonware) Agenda at once out of the water.

Hi wetsmellydog,

Welcome to the site.

I'm working on a program that will do this easily, although it's designed for other purposes. It's called interruptron.

I still have some bugs to iron (lots actually), so I cannot say when it'll be ready.
1021
I've found a massive amount of mp3s in a site that I want to download.
Unfortunately, there's no RSS feed and they are all spread in different places.

I have used download managers in the past (and recursive spiders such as wget) to do this... but maybe there's an easier way.
For example, free download manager will let you select all the mp3s in a page, but will not do it recursively. Worse, it'll bother you with a popup -that cannot be turned off- everytime a dl is completed.

I guess wget is still the best... but looking forward your answers.

Thanks

yes, yes, and yes.
:)

You need to install itunes, make it eat your library, and risk that it may change some of your tags. then you can use ITsfv.

It may be worth it, but do keep a backup...

Actually, the most automatic resource (if not the most accurate/high quality) is this tool:

mp3toys.net

And a very good player in itself.
I did most of my collection with the ITunes hack described above, and then I'm running mp3toys to find what's left.

edbro, NOTE:
UPDATE: The iTunes art grabber doesn't work now. Apple has blocked the full-sized artwork for 99% of the store. (only thumbnails are still availible) Feel free to search the other sources though.

ITsfv does work right now. Hurry up if you want large covers.

General Software Discussion / Re: alternatives to partition magic/paragon?
« Last post by urlwolf on September 30, 2007, 11:26 AM »
Ok thanks.
Actually, I should discuss my partitioning strategy here.
I have a OS partition, a data partition, a music partition and 2 HDs. Right now, OS and Data are in the same HD. These are the two most accessed partitions.

The idea is to put the music partition together with the OS partition on one HD and then the Data partition (pretty accessed) in the other HD... this should give me some faster boot times (well, not boot, but the entire HD activity frenzy once you log in) and general a faster-feeling system.

I'm not sure how much speed improvements I should expect or if it's worth the trouble. Any idea about this? these are 2 160 Gb 5200rpm drives (laptop).

Also, any other recommendations for faster HD access overall? Is it true that you should leave 20% of disk space empty? I have a defragmenter running periodically already.

Thanks
