Living Room / LinkedIn "Intro" App Reroutes & Reads Your Email
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:08 PM »
I don’t subscribe to LinkedIn (though I receive "invitations" to join daily from them), but if I were ever considering it I am pretty sure this would the convincer to NOT subscribe.

According to this article at Bishop Fox the LinkedIn app for iOS7 reroutes all your email - IMAP and SMTP -through their own servers, with a whole lot of security concerns attached to that.

Here's the article.

If you say it one more time I might shoot you!

Naturally Windows 7 defaults to that when you first set up a network. I guess it isn't bad for a lot of folks who don’t have many needs, but it is very limiting, at least for me. I hate HomeGroup!

Thanks!

Jim

No, I don’t have users setup on each machine for each of us. That was never a requirement on past OS's. Something new on Windows 7?

That has always* been the (incredibly annoying) case for workgroup file sharing for the reasons given by mwb1100 above. Only alternative would be to go the Home Group route which allows machines to pre-authenticate via group membership.

*By always I mean NT4 and up, since Win9x was a DOS not a NOS and therefore doesn't count.

Oh. Ok. I didn't realize that was the case. So rather than ditz witj my lengthy list of questions, why not just set up identical logins for you and your wife on both machines and see if that cures the problem. I'm very sure it will.

Planning to do that tonight when I get back upstairs.   :)

I hear what you're saying.... but before I had these two computers I had five XP machines in my house, and I could access ALL files from any one of the others. And I did not have the same user ID and password on more than one. Did it like that for a few years. So I don’t know why there's a discrepancy between what you say has always been the case and what I was doing!

We do have separate user accounts, none with blank passwords. However I do have both configured for auto-login so the passwords for each of our users do not have to enter the passwords every time.

I have the ASUS stock firmware on my router. I haven't updated it yet. I was told in the past by ASUS Support - when I was planning to update firmware on an ASUS motherboard based on someone's suggestion - that I should never update their firmware unless I was having a specific problem and the newer firmware is supposed to address that problem. (True? Good advice?)

I haven't changed the firmware to Tomato or DD-WRT. Why not? Because I don’t know much at all about it and all help/instructions/tutorials I have reviewed did not seem to be addressed to the "uninitiated". So not being knowledgeable and not really having any specific firmware problems, I figured why screw with it. I know it is supposed to give me more options and more control, etc., but then again I have read a lot of sad posts from folks whose attempt to update to those firmwares failed - and they don’t seem to receive a whole lot of support getting things running again. They usually get told that if they didn't know what they were doing then they shouldn’t have tried updating. Sounded like pretty good advice to me!

My router settings have a lot more screens to show the same info as yours, 4wd. I can post screen caps of all if necessary though.

Thanks!

@Jim:

I'm sure the hive mind here at DoCo can get you sorted if you give us some additional info:

1. What are you using for a home router?

ASUS NT-R16

2. What are the router's network and wireless settings (excluding any passwords)?

There are several pages of them. Do you need all or just specific settings?

3. On each machine, -

  • what specific flavor of Win 7 are you running?
  • are you set up for a workgroup or homegroup?
  • what are the network settings for your wireless card or NIC
  • what are you using for security software? Is it one of those suites or just an anti-malware package?
  • are you running a firewall other than the one built into Windows

Windows 7 Professional (My computer) and Windows 7 Home Premium (Wife's computer)
Both setup for Workgroup
Both hardwire-connected to router
Security software on both machines:
Anti-Virus = Norton AntiVirus 2013 (Standalone AV - no suites)
My computer also has Malwarebytes Pro, while my wife's has Malwarebytes Free version.
Network settings for NIC:

*** What all do you need here? The Properties box for the NIC on each machine? Status box?

Thanks!

OIC, I think.
I am seriously concerned that US pressures are likely to screw up the Internet for everyone else and that it could become just another tool for US economic hegemony/colonisation.

Which is pretty damn close to what we have now....

This thread started out as very interesting to me... Then you folks all apparently switched to another language and lost me.   :(

It all used to be so damn easy. Now I cannot get files to share at all - with two Windows 7 machines. I know damn well that on the previous OS's I could access everything on the other computers in the house. No more. I can access files on my main computer from my wife's, but not the other way around. It's not too bad now that I am down to only two running boxes here. But when I had five it was murder.

Being disabled it ain't easy to find out why my wife is complaining about not being able to find this or that file, or recovering her emails when she unexpectedly lost them. Not when our main boxes are upstairs in our office and I am downstairs on a laptop! Getting up and down is definitely doable for me - but pretty painful. Now we're both on Windows 7 and access is gone. I have been through about every networking article I can find online without success. And I see a LOT of others with similar complaints posting out there too, so I don’t think it's just a problem here. Microsoft has to know that there are a lot of users who are running a simple home network who don’t need all the crap you guys are discussing. (At least I think you are - you all could be talking about space travel for all I can decipher of most of this thread!!   :P )

I know I have had this discussion here before - maybe a year of two ago - and I think the simplest suggestion was to use TeamViewer for file access. Can't remember why I abandoned that one; I know I tried it but didn't have the best results with it. I had a subscription to Go To My PC for a few years but that really just allowed me to access my main computer from others. Doesn’t work the other way around IIRC.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion!   8)

Stephen Fry has a great essay on language pedants: summarized in an article here:  http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/stephen-fry-takes-on-the-language-pedants/article624941/

Or read the entire treatise here:  http://www.stephenfry.com/2008/11/04/dont-mind-your-language%E2%80%A6/

In the article on his page - the second link above - the part about pedantry is at least halfway down the page.

@J-Mac: you and others must have touched a nerve. The link to your comments (http://www.macecraft...0&p=32983#p32983) along with the rest of that thread have apparently since been removed from the Macecraft forum.

That's a kinda jive thing to do even if they did publicly release their study after the fact.  :-\

Darn! You're right!

Says my last post was in 2010; doesn’t show my post from yesterday at all.

Jive isn't the right word...

Thank you.

Jim

188
Well, after receiving a number of other posts complaining about the above circumstances (requiring "endorsement" of their study prior to releasing it), Macecraft Software finally did go ahead and release the study freely. It can be found here: http://www.macecraft.com/registry-cleaner-benchmark-study/

The study basically shows that Windows 7 startup times decreased by 20% after cleaning the registry with jv16 Power Tools 2014. They claim that startup time decreased from 100 seconds to 47 seconds, which sounds unbelievable. Too good to be true?

Charts and graphs and screenshots available at the above link.

Thanks!

Jim

189
how strange.

bizarre!

Isn't it? I have been a member of that forum for a long time - since back when jv16 was a free software - and I have always felt the devs there were top rate. This is just baffling to me!

Perhaps they hired a publicity "expert" or something who cooked this up?

Jim

I received a very interesting email message from Macecraft Software today. They are the developers of jv16 Powertools. Here is the body of the email:

We are about to release jv16 PowerTools 2014 and at the same time our new
registry cleaner comparison study featuring the new 2014 version.

This time we did what no one else have dared: We ran benchmarks before and
after cleaning a dirty computer with jv16 PowerTools 2014 to see if it can
show measurable results in the computer's performance. And the results are
interesting!

However, we want the entire World to hear about this. So, we are asking you
to help to spread the word. We will release the benchmark study only after
it gets your support.

To support it in social media, please join our Thunderclap campaign:
http://thndr.it/16h1oPh

Thunderclap is a crowd-speaking platform that helps people be heard by
saying something together. If enough people support our campaign,
Thunderclap will blast out a timed Facebook Post or Tweet from all of us,
creating a wave of attention to the benchmark study. And no, it doesn't
cost a thing.

So they want me to publicly support the results of this performance study, but they won't allow me to see the results unless I declare my support first.

The reply posted by the developer when a user posted objections on their forum wasn’t very reassuring. See it here:

http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5400&p=32983#p32983

Here's the quote:

Alright, if you do not want to join the campaign to give the benchmark study some publicity, you do not have to.

I previously used jv16 Powertools for years, though I haven't used it for the past three or four years. This is a first for me!

I'm now using Agent Ransack and it does indeed find text buried deep within documents - and it does it rather fast, too.
Agent Ransack is another non-indexed search tool.

software that has to create an index, robbing a computer of resources by having a service running in the background that often at inconvenient times start to do its indexing.

That was much more valid as a criticism in the days of slow PCs with limited memory and small hard drives. But that world is long gone for most of us.

The thought of running individual searches when I want to find something in the 174,071 PDF files on my PC is just too horrible to contemplate. I barely notice any effect of my indexing software (X1) on this 64-bit PC with 8GB of memory and a 256-GB solid state drive. (The data is on a regular HDD.)

Of course, using on-the-fly searching means that when you do want to find something, all that disk thrashing and chasing all over the place will drain the PC's resources, far more so than the limited disk activity that is involved in indexed searches.

With resources no longer a real issue for anyone with a half decent PC, the choice between indexed and non-indexed searching depends on what you want to do. For example, non-indexed searchers can't work with most email software, especially something like Outlook. So you either have to go for indexed or use the software itself. Going for indexed means that the same software can look at email and files at the same time. I can even tell X1 to look for things in in email and files at the same time.

Michael,

I agree to your comments about indexing - at least for myself and my computers. I don’t want to make any assumptions with regard to the system capabilities of others however.

My problem is finding an index-based search engine that is worth its salt for a somewhat reasonable price. dtSearch, for example, at $200 for their desktop offering, is well beyond my budget! I don’t use search for any business or formal educational research. My needs are purely to assist me in searching my own saved data. And I do have a fair amount of data! My main desktop box has a 160GB SS system drive, an inernal 3TB SATA drive, and two external drives, one 2TB and one 1TB. I was using X1 - as a matter of fact you were one of my best sources of help on the X1 forum, Michael! - but somewhere around the later V.5xx to V6.0 X1 became very buggy for me. Also the ability to search other drives on my home network became almost impossible. Using the Client Deployment fix stopped working and I became disillusioned. You did help a lot on the forum but the developer was very unhelpful, so I ended up abandoning X1.

I mentioned Agent Ransack above because it did surprise me. I downloaded a very large PDF file last year named "SZ_Interface Philosophy_0.999...ebook.pdf" as was suggested in an earlier post in this thread - I think by Armando. I selected at random a unique word from near the end of that file and one of my tests for search engines is to search for that word. I do narrow my searches whenever possible, like keeping most of my personal research documents on my 3TB internal SATA drive in one main directory, and I limit the search for that word to that directory. Ransack found that word - along with other rather unique words in that file - in a matter of seconds. It did surprise me!

Michael, I would go back to X1 in a flash if I could be assured that they have their support act together better than it was a few years back. What say you?

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: Dannon "fruit on the bottom" yogurt missing in Miami
« on: September 09, 2013, 04:01 PM »

With me it doesn't matter. I'm a fruit already on the bottom!! Or is it that my bottom is in Fruit Of The Loom?  Anyway I can get Strawberry Banana FOTB Dannon, but it's "Greek Style" which seems to be the new "thing" for all yogurt these days.  :)

+1

But I fear they are all abandoning their regular products and coming out with these new "Greek Style" products. Why? Because it's still just a container of yogurt and a little bit of fruit but they can apparently charge a whole lot more because it's "Greek". I don't get it...  I just want the old "Fruit on the Bottom" Dannon!

Jim

I know how you feel. I just found "Miller" yogurt, made by Quaker.  They had an answer to Dannon called "Fruit Up" with the mouse fruit at the top and the white base underneath.  The raspberry was especially good.  After a couple of weeks, it's gone and now they have "corner" with supposedly more natural fruit you can dump into the white stuff.  But I like the Raspberry mouse.  It was smooth.  Also you didn't have to muck about with the packaging.  Just pull the lid off and dip your spoon in.  :)

Yogurt Tip of the Day - After mixing the fruit up in the yogurt, cover it back up with Press 'n Seal or similar and put it in the freezer. Eat it frozen... excellent!  (I was doing it without mixing it up first; till my daughter told me to mix it first...  :)  )

I have read recent articles stating that "cloud" providers stand to lose $35 billion because of the Snowden releases. (Talk about shooting the messenger!)

I want to know - who the hell makes up these estimates?! I spent many years preparing financial estimates and I know that one was pulled directly out of someone's rectum!   :o

Thanks all! So File Locator Pro is one to give a serious look, huh? OK, then I shall!

@Carole: How do I lose focus? I don’t - I almost never lose focus! Well, maybe sometimes I do nowadays....   ;D  Seriously though, the Start menu loses focus more often than I'd like. If my cursor strays outside the menu area and a popup occurs from any other software the Start menu - and therefore its search terms and results - are gone. Also if you click on one result and it isn't really what you thought, you have to start again and type in your search term(s), wait for results, etc. Of course I could wait for the first result and then click on the "See more results" link to open the explorer window, but I prefer a window to begin with. A simple search bar similar to the Start menu's search box would be fine if it couldn't lose focus, and if it did not lose all results upon looking at one result. That's a "fail" imo. But if it works for you, hooray!

Now, File Locator Pro. Hey, I remember downloading Agent Ransack in the past. I don’t think I actually installed it though. Apparently I should have. I guess I didn't expect much because it was free. Go figure.

Thanks again!
