General Software Discussion / Re: Online Multi Anti Virus Scanners?.
« on: January 06, 2009, 07:48 AM »
hi justice -- that was what I was wondering and thought too --- but I thought that when splitting the files in smaller files in rar or zip and sending them independently one by one to scan would give "no virus" report as the file is splitted, may be the virus might be splitted too?... (don't laugh - as always, I am no computer expert)...

But as I understand from you, it is possible to scan by splitted files.... Is that correct?.. In example, if I split 100MB file into five 20MB files, and scan them seperately, will it give the absolutely same report as if it was scanned as the whole file in entirety? Is it same for RAR, EXE and all types, including unknown extensions that can be changed to known extensions, providing that they are not password protected?...

General Software Discussion / Online Multi Anti Virus Scanners?.
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:04 PM »

I know a lot of online multi anti virus scanners such as virustotal or jotti and many of them. But I do not know any of them that can scan more than 20MB (preferably more than 100Mb). Anyone knows such a multi anti virus scanner online (not single antivirus -- the ones like the virus total) that can scan that much large files?

General Software Discussion / Re: firefox preloader
« on: December 27, 2008, 10:57 AM »

Curt, thanks, I will take a  look at eBoostr and will see how it does....

ok, fodder, no problem, I understand now....

I uninstalled firefox preloader (not firefox itself of course, as I am satisfied with for years even if it consumes RAM or not)....

I have 2Gb RAM but as Curt guessed I have many software installed in the startup... but they are compulsory like incremental realtime backup software, website watcher, notetabpro in the startup, dropbox, logmein etc.... all have some use for me but all add up consuming system resources...

this  is a useful utility... what it does is that it preloads firefox in the windows startup just like the internet explorer does and firefox starts faster when you launch it...

General Software Discussion / Re: Is XP really that good?
« on: November 28, 2008, 01:43 PM »

well -- I always used alternative software --- in example 10 years ago I was using opera when most of the people were using IE, Netscape, AOL or other popular browsers.... Or I was using Eudora -- not outlook or similar software... later these became popular along with Mozilla programs and other open source software....

I can tell that popular is not always the best.... you can find the best software that you want to use most fits to your habits or usage.....

However when it comes to the operating systems I never think anything alternative to windows --- the main reason being that you can find any software for windows platform that suits your needs... But when you use linux etc. you do not have much possibilities when you want to find a software for a spesific purpose.... There are some software that allows windows software run on linux platform  --- but it does not replicate or run these software as on windows...

so I guess the main obstacle why other OS platforms does not become more popular is that you do not have lots of choices in respect of software.....

Thats what I think...

I suggest that you can use the power siphon software --- It is no longer available but it is a nice one.......

It even can compile the whole site as a single exe file if you like --- no files or directories -- a self viewing archive...

I can send the software to you if you do wish so --- the web site of the creator no longer exists...

I have a pocket PC that has mobile 5.0 and Activesync 4.1 . I can not make synchronization with notebook pc by wireless connection and I heard that this wireless synchronization is disabled in the new versions of the windows mobile and activesync. Is this correct and how can I bypass this limitation?

General Software Discussion / Re: Proxy / Tunneling ???
« on: November 22, 2008, 01:45 PM »
hi housetier .... actually I use logmein software to use my other computers..... but the computer that I will use as a proxy is too weak in respect of ram and cpu, displaying web pages or using programs would freeze it (I do not want to use my other strong computers as proxy because I use them in the evening and using them 24hrs would be an extra expense in the future - so I will use the old computer) .... It would be more appropriate for me to use the old computer only as a proxy that only transfers internet (no display of web pages or programs that consumes cpu or memory.... only as internet transfer which I will route to the computer that is blocked)

however I will take a look at the ssh issue more a it appears to offer different possibilities.....  Thank you one more time !!!

well... I can be considered as a computer novice although I use it a lot as a daily user --- can not get into details like these -- but will try your solution housetier.. while at that time, can anyone else suggest any software to install to my other computer that is not blocked, to use it as a proxy for the computer that is blocked?.... ((in laymans terms))...

thanks house tier... will try to understand the solution you mean....

General Software Discussion / Proxy / Tunneling ???
« on: November 22, 2008, 05:19 AM »

Hello.... In one of the computers I use, almost all the ports all blocked and there are forbidden websites - even facebook or similar sites.... The web based proxy servers are blocked too.... To summarize --- webalizer is used and there is some sort of censorship..

What I want to do is to install a proxy/tunneling software on another computer of mine in different location and use it as a proxy on the computer in another location... So I want to use my other computer on the internet as a proxy....

I tried some software as ccproxy but haven't managed to make it work... I guess it is a proxy for network computers - not computers on the internet...

Is there any software that can accomplish what I want to have done?.. I prefer freeware...

General Software Discussion / MSI S260 touchpad ?
« on: October 29, 2008, 06:46 AM »

One of my laptops (MSI S260) frozen and I took it to the service... I am told the touchpad is not  working and they ask 90USD + tax (around 115 USD)....

when compared to the price of the laptop itself, this price seemed funny for a touchpad....

I am trying to find from ebay -- as all the  touchpads are almost the same....

but the issue is the size to fit --- so the model of the synaptics touchpad matters...

I can not find what model of touchpad the MSI S260 has... even not in the manual.... where can I find the exact model of the synaptics so that I can order the correct touchpad from ebay abroad....

so --- any suggestions?....

45

I found some command line email clients after a search... so I will be cancelling this request for some time....

I am using a VPS for having some software remain open 24 hours a day.... I found a solution to get notified when the server is down with the help of the members here, by their suggested softwares and services..... But I am having one other program needed: When the windows on the VPS reboots, the software needs some manual interventions to work properly and for that reason I need a software that sends free SMS and sends email (both of them) when the windows reboots... Can such a program be programmed?...

47
thank you city zen for the help  :)

hi city zen...

Thank you for this reply.... At first glance it looks good but what I look for is a third party service that hosts the software and pings my vps..... (like the services that check the website uptime --- but in my case I look for one that checks my VPS windows internet uptime - not a web page-- may be it can do by pinging?.. or may be I open a web page of the service and it refresher on my VPS browser regularly and when not refreshed the service notifies me when there is a downtime...)

thank you anyway for the reply...

49

Is there any service that regularly checks an internet connection of a computer (windows VPS in my case - not a web page), that notifies the user when there is a disconnection?....

Of course this service must be in another place so that it can notify of a possible interruption in the internet connection of the windows...... can be by pinging or by refreshing a web page or other ways...

does anyone knows such a service?....

second program I look for is a software that emails me when the VPS (windows 2003) is restarted without my attendance.....

Any here knows such softwares?....

General Software Discussion / Re: Battery Icon Stuck ???
« on: September 02, 2008, 02:17 PM »
Definitely remove the battery when you're running off AC, unless you live in an area with unstable power grid. Does wonders for battery lifetime :)
Have you tested that?
I really really really would like to see a test side by side of 2 laptops running with/without battery, to check if the battery life is improved.

well you did not ask me but my personal experience with a guess is that running on AC might not change a lot..... This is just a guess but based on the fact that I have been using my notebook for a bit more than 2 years nearly 24/5 and until last month there were no problems and when not connected to AC, it was having 2 hours activity as it was in the first day.... Considering that a life of battery is 2-3 years (is that correct?) 2 years with the same performance as the first day means it did not loose too much power.... According to the notebook hardware control software, its wear level is only 26% (I guess it is a good level?...)

These are only humble opinions of mine, but I guess I will do the same with a new battery that I will purchase because my experience was not too bad (with AC on).... May be I am wrong --- some of you would know better considering the technical knowledge..... Fodder would be correct..
