Living Room / USB HDD enclosure or what?
« on: October 08, 2017, 11:12 AM »
Hi. Time to call on the wisdom of DC again... I've got an old hard drive laying around and have never got around to doing anything with it, but figure it's about time. There's most likely nothing of interest on it, except to please my curiousity, if the HDD even works. I only recently picked it out of the computer it came with. But what I'd like some help figuring out, is how to access it? Preferably something cheap, something like a simple USB HDD enclosure that I can put the old HDD in and plug into my laptop. Would love some suggestions for an enclosure or what I'd need to have a chance of seeing what this ancient piece of computing contains (it was made in 2000 if I remember correctly, and I probably used it until about 2005).

Thanks, people!

And again today:

I've used Total Commander since it was Windows Commander 3.14 I think, and can't see myself switching fulltime, but thought this was such a good deal that I figured it's another valuable tool to keep in my software arsenal. Impressed, so far!

I'm re-trialling nYNAB and although it's not perfect and I think it's too expensive, I do like it. I appreciate that I can alter my budget in the mobile app and on any PC. I tried Financier - - which is a good alternative, but the (single) developer is open about not wanting to put much work into new features and basically just maintain it. That would be fine with me if it had scheduled transactions and a mobile app, which it doesn't.

I think I'll start paying for the subscription once my trial runs out. Budgeting for the subscription shouldn't be too difficult, after all ;)

 ;D Promising title!

Drawplus X8 is only £20 / $25 and there's a discount coupon you can use for 25% off: DPSURPRISE

I'm actually tempted by it, even if I've bought Affinity Designer, exactly for the AutoTrace feature (I'll just convince myself that I'm paying for a plugin, I suppose). A bit reluctant though, as I only had problems with the last version of DrawPlus I owned, think it was X5, maybe X6. It crashed all the time, and was pretty much unusable (for me, YMMV). The software was very nice, when it came to features, GUI, etc. but the crashes, not so much  :-\

There's of course also Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, so there might be an even better deal coming up, for all I know.

From the Serif website:
Serif legacy products

Our legacy, or 'Plus' range of software is no longer being developed as we focus entirely on our new Affinity range of professional graphic design software. However licenses for WebPlus, PagePlus, PhotoPlus and DrawPlus are still available to purchase here if you wish.
They're selling these for £20 /$25 a piece.

I successfully downloaded free (latest) full versions of MoviePlus X6, WebPlus X8 and PagePlus X9 by using email address I used to purchase PagePlus X8. You'll need to pay for DrawPlus X8 and PhotoPlus X8, however.

Full version Affinity Designer 1.5 for Windows was released two days ago!

Opening offer of £30 / $40 / €40 until 24th November. Official price at £40 / $50 / €50 after that. Very decent price!

Living Room / Re: Goodbye to my father
« on: May 26, 2016, 02:07 AM »
My condolences, mouser. I'm sorry for your loss, he really sounds like a great father and a great person.

Ok, so now it works... I rebooted my computer and that fixed it. My guess is that Dropbox probably caught the PrtScr key, and waited for me to use it, and then when I declined, PrtScr was left on it's own (in lack of better words).

Anyway, nothing to see here  :-\

I'm having a problem getting PrtScr working with Screenshot Captor. Needed to capture an active window, but Alt+PrtScr didn't do anything except asking if I wanted Dropbox to save the screenshot, which I declined. Alt+PrtScr does work, but Screenshot Captor doesn't interfere with Windows 10's default behaviour. Is this possible? Or do I need to use AutoHotkey or something to catch Windows' hotkey and pass it on to SC? Apparently I haven't used SC for this since installing Win10...

... and extended for another day.

I got the free Standard edition, but if I like it, it seems like the Pro version is a regular at BDJ, so should be able to get it discounted later.

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: NANY 2015 Plege: A FARR Plugin
« on: December 28, 2014, 08:50 AM »
I pledge to write a plugin for Find and Run Robot.
Now.. what Plugin should I write?  I could try to finally write a plugin for use with my Clipboard Help+Spell tool, which some have asked for in the paste..
Yes please :)

I haven't been very active for a while, although I browse the forums pretty much every day, but I'm in! There are certainly some posters that are deserving of some extra credits!

I'd check out the Opera forums. Opera is up to 20.something now, so might be solved with an update?

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 11 Released!
« on: March 07, 2014, 04:24 PM »
Comparing their price isn't faulty reasoning. Jibz didn't, as far as I can tell, state that the price was the only difference. His post was a followup to the price discussion and just brought into the frame some comparison between the differing licenses and prices. It seemed clear enough to me that the post was only concerned with the price and license difference between some well known file managers. An interesting post as well... to me, anyway ;)

« on: February 20, 2014, 03:03 AM »
Total Commander 8.50 final is released!

It can be downloaded from

File operations:

  • F5 copy: Option to verify files after copying them.

  • Select and copy related files, e.g. *.jpg > crw*.cr2 selects/copies raw files only if there is a related .jpg file
  • F8 Delete: Only warn at the end if folders couldn't be deleted
  • F8 Delete: Always use new delete method when VistaDelete isn't set in wincmd.ini, but show our own delete confirmation dialog if the system dialog is disabled
  • Support unpacking of more archive formats: 7zip, new RAR5 format, as well as -lh6- and -lh7- (LHA)
  • RAR with encrypted file names: Show archive content after entering password
  • Pack/unpack files: Option to remember last entered password until TC is minimized, Windows goes to standby, or the screen saver starts
  • Alt+F5 pack: New option to leave out the names of the selected folders when packing each folder to a separate archive

General Software Discussion / Re: RightNote version 3.0.0 released
« on: January 25, 2014, 07:24 AM »
Well, I'll add some RightNote love, to balance out the negative views.

I love RightNote, I think it's a wonderful piece of software and is perfect for my needs.  :-*
I probably don't use half it's features, but what I do need is in there, and the web capturing is excellent. Money well spent, IMO!

Great product!

wraith and kyrathaba, thanks a lot for your answers! I hadn't really thought about the approach you're using wraith, creating the world, characters, etc. as a starting point. I can imagine that it might very well be a better approach for me than trying to develop a story from A to Z.

Good to know that once again I can rely on fellow DC-members to come up with something helpful

Have purchased your book and look forward to reading it! Being a fellow DC'er makes me feel like I almost know a real author ;)

I'm curious about a few things and hopefully you could be of help... When you first got the idea to this novel, how did you develop the plot and characters? Did everything sort of "just appear" or did it start with a premise and then take off from there?

How did you set about writing it? I've got a few story ideas, and sometimes I sit down, fire up a word editor and ... very little happens... :( I write a few sentences but what I write seems a bit phony (usinga word by a favourite fictional character of mine, guess who?). What was the start of writing this novel like for you?

Thanks for any input!

Great idea! I'm in!

I have the same problem as Jibz. It does autostart, but asks for admin privileges. Probably need to contact the developer about it.
