Aww...
I knew that! Slaphead moment. I have used msconfig for troubleshooting for years, just haven't used it for this.
Thanks for the quick and spot on reply

General Software Discussion / automatically restart in Safe Mode?
« on: March 01, 2011, 05:47 AM »
The question is in my head & I am asking for education from my friends at DC.
Sometimes I am troubleshooting a problem & would like to restart in Safe Mode. Is it possible to add a selection to the shut-down options to "restart in safe mode?" or is it an action that happens so early in the process that it cannot be controlled until Windows is truly running? like at root level...
maybe the ability to hold at the screen where one chooses options, like safe mode or with networking...
Or is it something that only Windows developers could include in their OS?

Just random musings about FARR:
Today I learned that MS has a vulnerability in shortcut icons. Their Fix is to take the graphics out of the shortcut link. As I thought about whether I wanted such a fix, I realized how seldom I click on icon shortcuts anymore. Using FARR is quicker & trains me to use the keyboard more anyway.
BTW, I uses alt + spacebar to bring up FARR.

General Software Discussion / Re: Synergy Plus
« on: July 14, 2010, 08:25 AM »
I have used Synergy for several years. I am now running the latest Synergy Plus revision. Ordinarily I have 3 computers running, dual monitors on each, and sometimes one of my laptops. I can keep my development machine free of widgets and gadgets while running continuos weather monitor on different computer and eMail/messaging on a third. Just mousing past the screen edge of my primary machine puts me over on the eMail machine, type a quick response & mouse back to the work machine. Or set the big guy to render something & mouse over to another machine while primary is busy.
I am a fan of Synergy in all its versions & glad to see it discussed on DC, my other "gotta' have it" resource.

« on: May 22, 2010, 08:10 AM »
and it's plugins? I now run 3 programs from Mouser & would like DC updater to keep up with them. I don't see how to add them to DC updater
thanks,

Living Room / WISH LIST - Medic Alert app on phone
« on: March 11, 2010, 08:17 PM »
Medical condition that means I might need to contact EMTs immediately. I wish I had an app for my Palm Centro that would call local # & play my pre-recorded message & a prominent link on phone desktop for medical information document. There is one for PC phones but not for Palm. Anybody know of one?

RANT!
probably off the true topic, but I often wish for an AV UI that is understandable to non-experts. (me). i wish there were some agreed on naming convention. What in the world is "Resident Shield" anyway & do I need a "Network Shield, P2P Shield, Standard Shield or Web Shield" also? Am I going up in smoke without a "Link Scanner" or a "RootKit" warning? Is "Defender" enough? Do I need "MS Security Essentials" also? Or will all these guys fight each other & send my machine up in smoke?
Oh Well. I guess I have stumbled on a good mix since I don't seem to get Virus or Trojan infections. (that I know of!?)

I have one lifetime licence I am proud of; FormsToGo from Bebosoft that helps me make forms for webpages. I got the lifetime licence because I was on of the first on-board with them. Since I only use it a few times a year, it would not be worth it to me at their current price, but with N/C updates, I smile every time I use it.
BTW, I recommend the program to non-coders like me that just want to get on with things.

In the education field, there is a concept of "pull-up," where younger kids are quick to learn what the older kids around them know.
I am not a coder, but when I come to Donation Coder, I feel "pulled up," able to stretch my vision of software and what is possible.
I had an idea, a wish, if you will, for an app that would tell me when my overloaded XP machine was finally finished loading and able to work; Skrommel wrote it for me in about an hour. IdleRun.
Every time I peruse donationcoder I find a new jewel that also seems made just for me. LacunaLauncher allows me to break up and order Start-up items...on and on. Oh, and the only PC users who can do without FARR are those who don't yet know about it.
So I guess you could say that what I like about donationcoder is that it makes me smarter!

General Software Discussion / Windows 7 evaluation
« on: May 29, 2009, 07:27 AM »
Just for curiosity I loaded Windows 7 evaluation on a machine a few days ago. Since I don't have Vista on any of my machines it has been an interesting learning curve.
So far I don't see compelling reasons to switch from XP. I don't watch TV or movies from any of my PCs.
Anyone else have experience with this? Are there lots and lots of under the hood reasons it is better?

Living Room / Re: "Check mail every ??? minutes"
« on: May 29, 2009, 07:08 AM »
I seldom use clients anymore. I keep a machine up & open to Yahoo! Mail that updates within seconds. AIM messenger, MS messenger, Yahoo! messenger & Skype are open too. Yeah, I am hooked, but few of my messages ever make it to my hard drive...well, the messengers keep a log, but...you know...

Journaling is such a great mind-alignment tool. It enhances learning tremendously. My most recent use was in a creative writing class.
I recently visited an exemplary elementary school where all the students, down to kinder, were journaling! Look out world, the geniuses are coming!

I read the review and looked at the site.
Looks perfect for this small town club for kids that needs online registration.
Thanks for the good info!

Carol,
Thanks for the quick reply. I may end up spending the $400 for Adobe, but I was hoping someone might know of a less expensive option.

General Software Discussion / PDF on my website/fill-in?
« on: May 17, 2009, 01:35 PM »
I have a client who wants to post a PDF form, allow users to fill it in online, then send it to the website owner.
Anybody know a low-cost, simple way I can emplement this?

I updated FARR this morning. On one of my machines I got an extensive error message & a pop-up that said eas violation. I uninstalled FARR ran Ccleaner & reinstalled FARR. Same error message & pop-up. EAS violation, notify Mouser.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Lacuna Launcher
« on: February 07, 2009, 07:44 AM »
For a couple of days I have been running IdleRun and LacunaLauncher together. Slick!
After Windows is settled down, IdleRun starts LacunaLauncher which then loads FARR & Synergy.
I really like this combination of apps!

Oops. Forgive me.
I should have looked at your site before jumping to mention Skromell's IdleRun. I see you have IdleStart which would probably make a good combination.

Yea! Got it!
Next, I think I will use Skromell's IdleRun to automatically start LacunaLauncher when Windows is all loaded & settled down.
Thanks for a great tool.

« on: February 02, 2009, 08:01 PM »
Lacuna Launcher works fine with just a list, but I cannot make it delay
  C:\Program Files\Synergy\synergy.exe 10 10
  C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\FindAndRunRobot.exe
this just skips synergy & goes to FARR
Can you tell me what I am missing?

A while back I lost my AC adapter for laptop & bought a universal adapter/charger. I have recently learned that sometimes these gadgets overcharge & ruin motherboard. I would like to see a utility, small like a widget, that would tell me the incoming voltage while it is attached, maybe even compared to what the laptop should have. I did a brief google search & don't see that there is one available. Can it even be done?
