Hi folks, I am doing some testing with malware and would like to know if you are aware of any forums that are actively involved with sharing malware (for testing purpose)?

General Software Discussion / Low Audio Levels
« on: December 13, 2015, 04:32 AM »
While listening to any audio from any application (browser, media player, etc.), the audio levels of the specific application do not match the level of the "Device".

To better explain what I mean, have a look at the attached picture showing you the audio level of Chrome playing music and compare the level to the levels under "Device" (that's my Speakers). Although both are set at the same level, the audio that plays through Chrome is slightly lower (indicated by the green bar). How can I achieve the maximum audio from my applications?

I have installed the Realtek HD driver 6.0.1.7680 and noticed that unchecking the box for "Loudness Equalization" improves the audio levels to some extent for some tracks but the levels are still not the same. Should the levels be the same?

Should this setting (Loudness Equalization) be checked at all times? I noticed that when playing some tracks, this setting helps but for some other tracks, it is better to keep this setting unchecked as I notice that keeping it unchecked increases the volume and sounds much better.

General Software Discussion / Alert on File/Folder Access
« on: November 25, 2015, 09:42 AM »
I would like to know if there are any programs that can alert the user (who is currently logged in as Administrator) about an intruder trying to access a file/folder that has been specified in the program.

Scenario: I have set the folder to monitor as C. Hacker has somehow hacked into my PC and when trying to access any file/folder within C drive, I should get an alert informing me "who" is trying to access "what". Further, it should not allow the intruder to access the file/folder nor make any changes to them.

I basically need a second level of defense (after the Antivirus and Firewall). There are programs that display the log of files/folders accessed and the particular operation (create/modify/delete) performed but I need some kind of access control here that will prevent access. Thanks!

Hi,

I have a 32GB USB thumb drive & looking for a software that can do the following:

1. Create multiple partitions on USB flash drive (preferably 4 partitions).

2. Have the following in each partition:

Partition 1: User data that includes pics, vids, docs, installer files, portable apps, image files (iso), etc...(around 15GB)

Partition 2: Bootable OS (say Windows 10) - (around 4GB)

Partition 3: A live USB like environment which includes anti-virus tools & other tools like partition repair, recover lost data, etc...(around 5GB)

Partition 4: Reserved for Windows "ReadyBoost". (around 3GB)

The biggest challenge with USB thumbdrives is that if one wants to use any of the above, then the entire drive needs to be formatted.

Is there such a software?

Thanks!

Hi, is there a program that allows users to assign keyboard shortcuts and save those as icons on the desktop?

For example, pressing Alt + F4 shows the window that allows the user to shutdown, restart, etc. Now I would like this shortcut to be created as a icon on my desktop so when I click that icon, this same window should show up.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Music Identification via Sound Card
« on: November 04, 2014, 09:54 AM »
Hi,

I am looking for a software that can do the following:

When playing any music (from media player or web browser) and when the program is activated, it should monitor audio passing through the sound card and should identify the music via audio finger printing.

It can take a sample of audio clip, analyze it (audio fingerprinting) and then get the information from online databases. It should then list the following:

Track Name, Artist Name, Album Name, Album art & other tags if possible.

Please note that there are other programs currently that listen through the microphone (like Shazam) but this program should only monitor audio from the sound card of a computer.

I am really surprised that there are hardly any such programs. There are programs that can record audio from the sound card and there are programs that analyze (through audio finger printing) and retrieve information from online databases. They I am sure that these 2 functionalities can be combined and the above can be achieved.

Thanks!

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Assign Priority to Programs
« on: July 19, 2014, 09:57 AM »
Hi, can a program/AHK script be written so that one can just right click on a window's title bar (where you see the Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize & Close options) and select an option like - Set Priority -> Realtime, High, Above normal, Normal, Below normal, Low)?

The other way to do this in Win 8 would be open Task Manager -> Details tab -> Right click on the Program name -> Set Priority -> (select the priority: High, Low, etc.) which is a lengthy way.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Developer's Corner / Media Playback in Google Drive
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:34 AM »
Hi, Google Drive is currently unable to play some audio & video file formats (Ex: .flac).

I would like to use a Java script for Chrome which calls the VLC plug-in when any audio or video file is played in Drive. I have used similar some scripts earlier which work on YouTube. I think this should be possible in Drive too.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Thumbnail on Google Drive
« on: May 10, 2013, 11:15 AM »
Hi,

I have a Google drive account and uploaded a mp3 file (which has the album art) to my drive and was surprised not to see the album art online. I am able to see the album art on my PC but not on drive. I have linked drive with Drive music player to play audio online (http://drive-music-player.appspot.com). Does anyone have any solution to this? I have attached the screenshot of my drive which gives u an idea of what the issue is.

Thanks

Post New Requests Here / SkyDrive Bookmarklet
« on: May 01, 2013, 03:18 AM »
Hi, I have a SkyDrive account with lots of folders & subfolders.

Is there are script/extension (preferably for Chrome) that would help me to save images directly to SkyDrive?

When we right-click on any image on any webpage, there should be a context menu option like "Save to SkyDrive" and then it should first ask me to login (one time activity) and then show me the list of root folders on my SkyDrive account where I can expand and navigate to the desired subfolder and then save the image to that folder.

Thanks

General Software Discussion / Multi-boot Live USB
« on: December 03, 2012, 09:55 AM »
Hi,

Can I boot multiple Windows OSs directly from a live USB? Let me explain what I mean:
I have Windows 8 installed on my PC. Is there a way that I can have a Win 7 & XP OS (with the data) on my USB flash drive (32GB) such that during start-up, I can plug-in the USB and boot directly from either 7 or XP? Moreover, if that is possible and when I make any changes to a file, will the changes be carried over to the USB?

Thanks

Hi,

I have often come across webpages that advise users to perform some registry operations for fixing / tweaking / etc. The steps would include something like - Open the following path in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

I am sure you would agree that navigating manually through every branch in RegEdit is a pain. I am looking for a program / add-on / script / etc, which can be used in the following way:

1. Select the registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

2. Right-click on the selected registry path and select a context menu option like "Go to" or "Open" --> "Registry". This would open RegEdit and all the branches in the selected path.

Would be a really helpful feature...Think about it...

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Media Link Catalog
« on: May 11, 2012, 05:08 AM »
I have been searching for a program / web service which can be used to catalog media web links. Let me explain what I mean.

I download lots of stuff (audio / video / photos) from the web and have it properly organized on my PC in their appropriate folders ( I am sure most of us do this :) ). You would agree that in no time, your hard disk would be occupied with all the stuff.

Now, think about this. How about a program in which you initially create folders (like Music, Photos, Videos, etc) and then in a particular folder (say photos), you only provide the weblink to the image (For example: http://www.example.com/image01.jpg) and then the program automatically shows the thumbnail of that photo (Just like Facebook shows the thumbnail of the photo after you paste the weblink on the wall)?

Similarly, in our "would be" program's video folder, the user would just provide the weblink to the video (For example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9v7z-sdFVqU) and the program would show the thumbnail of the video (again just like in Facebook). On pages with multiple media content (Example, a page with a youtube video, couple of images and audio player) the program should "step through" each and every media content and allow the user to select the appropriate one (Yet again, just like in Facebook).

Note that the program should not actually download any photos, videos or audio but should only catalog the respective links in the appropriate folder with their thumbnails. Thumbnails here are a must for the user to identify which media file to open in the future.

Moreover, unlike other "Favorite Managers" which take a snapshot of the whole webpage, our program would "grab" the thumbnail of the file. In this way, all the content is on the web but we still have the links to them properly categorized with their thumbnails with us on our PC.

Think about it guys. Is it a good coding snack?

General Software Discussion / SkyDrive Video Thumbnail Issue
« on: May 07, 2012, 04:32 AM »
Hi all,

I have a couple of questions with regards to SkyDrive:

1. I uploaded a few video clips on SkyDrive and noticed that it did not show up the thumbnails of all the video formats. It is so difficult and frustrating to figure out which video to open without thumnails. Some videos have names like "D02_001.mpg" etc. Have you noticed your uploaded videos without thumbnails?

2. I have like 4 GB of stuff in my SkyDrive account and noticed that when I installed and ran the SkyDrive desktop app on my desktop, the program started downloading all the 4 GB of stuff to my computer. I understand the idea over here is to sync the files, but this is not what I want. Is there a way to prevent this? I mean I should only be able to upload the files using the desktop app but it should not download the stuff already in my account.

3. Is there any other service (with a pretty decent free space like 5 GB or so) which overcomes the above two points?

Thanks

General Software Discussion / Software Installation Monitor
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:40 AM »
I have started this thread so that we can have one comprehensive, updated list of programs that are used to monitor software installations (file and/or registry) so that any program monitored could be uninstalled completely.

If possible, please provide the following information:

1. Name (obviously), version and weblink to its official homapage...
2. Method it uses (Snapshot or Live file monitoring)

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Locate32
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:45 PM »
Hi there,

I use the latest build (3.1.11.7100) of Locate32. Since this version is only available as a portable program, how can I make this program to start automatically when I log in to Windows?

I have enabled the setting "Run Locate on system startup" in the "Settings" option to no avail. In general, how can one enable a portable program to start automatically when you login to Windows?

Post New Requests Here / [IDEA] Opening List of Links
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:19 PM »
Hi there,

I was browsing a website today in which I came across a list of 5 links like:

Link1
Link2
Link3
Link4
Link5

I had to manually click each link to open the webpage. At that point, I realized that this could be a coding snack.

Best example is on this same page at the top. We see a list of 5 links like:

Is it possible to code this like:

Select all the links, right-click and choose an option like "Open links as Tabs" or "Open links as Windows" so that all the links are opened simultaneously?

Thanks

I would like to know whether the following functionality is available in Sandboxie:

Currently, when a program is installed outside of a sandbox and then if a new sandbox is created or if an existing sandbox is opened, we see the installed program in the sandbox too (that is, changes in the actual system are carried into any sandbox). I would like to know if it is possible to restrict changes from the "actual" system to the "sandbox"?

Currently, the opposite functionality exists, that is any change in a sandbox is not carried to the actual system but would like to have it the other way around.

Thanks!

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Copy Text From Error Windows
« on: January 12, 2012, 11:01 AM »
Hi there. Was wondering if there is any program / script (any other way) that can copy text from error windows (or any other message windows). Often while communicating over IM for technical troubleshooting, it is required to quickly copy and send the error message to the other party. Sending screenshots of the error window is one way that I am aware of but what I really need is a way to copy the error message from the window and send it to the other party instead of manually typing long error messages.

A sample image of an error window is attached. In this case normally, I cannot copy the text from this window. Is it possible to make a program that can copy the text from such windows???

Thanks!!

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Taking Screenshot (via PrtScn) & MS Paint
« on: December 27, 2011, 08:32 AM »
I believe most users take screenshots by directly pressing the "PrtScn" button (entire screen) or "Alt + PrtScn" (for the active window). After this, they use the MS Paint program in this sequence:

1. Click on the "Start" logo or press the "Start" button on the keyboard (if available)
2. Type in Paint and click on "Paint" from the results or navigate to All Programs > Accessories > Paint
3. Open Paint and paste the image (Ctrl + V) or by the menu option.

I was wondering if it is possible to eliminate all the above 3 steps so that when the user presses either the "PrtScn" button or "Alt + PrtScn", MS Paint should open automatically with the copied image.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Selected Text Count
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:44 AM »
Hi,

I am looking for a program which would instantly show the count of the selected items (list). I know that this can be done in Excel but I need this on a global basis (everywhere - desktop, inside a program, Notepad, Word, etc). In short any text that can be selected.

For example: When I select 3 icons on the desktop, it should show the count as 3 besides the mouse pointer (like tool help tip). Similarly, when I select text like:

Hello
This
is what
i need

it should show a count as 4 (4 lines selected). Additional information like number of characters, words, lines etc would be an icing to the cake.

Is such a program possible on a global basis in Windows?

Thanks!

Post New Requests Here / PC Shut down
« on: August 20, 2011, 08:46 PM »
Hi guys,

Ok, so this is what I have searched for and have landed here. I need a tiny little program that can automatically shutdown my PC if the following 2 conditions are met simultaneously:

1. No user has logged in &
2. After after a certain amount of time / inactivity. When the user has specified an idle time duration (during program setup).

Often, many of my office systems have no one logged in the whole night. I really feel that this is a must have program and would save a lot of power. I think this would have to be coded as a service. Request any of the coders here to help me with this.

Thanks!
