Possible add similar capabilities for memory hogging programs? Sometimes that can bring a system to a halt. Although I don't know what you could do to combat it.

:-* The program I have been looking for for a long time now has finally been made: Farr for delicious. Find And Run Robot, Powermarks and Locate already beat all competititors in my bookmarks / files department but it doesn't work with the webservice, however localdeli does a terrific job.

Forget to add in: you can download it here

Powermarks is the best! (http://www.kaylon.com/power.html) it not only synchronises your bookmarks, crossbrowser, also lets you instant searches them, extract tags from them so they're grouped, backup/store them online so you can use them between multiple pcs.

A quick test found a couple of issues with vista / opera, but I hope to keep using this.

PhraseExpress mimics typing and I found no way to paste instant, so I stopped relying on it for programming aids unfortunately.

$10 for 25Gb of downloads, that's a lot of usenet posts if you are not downloading, so basically that's $10 for life then as it never expires. Headers are not counted towards your downloads

(btw i'm just a happy user, just to make sure -- i'm sure there are other services like this too but this is the one i'm using)

Document management system for the end user: tracks duplicates, copies, moves of user documents + versioned backup. Linking in with contact management facilities so you can see who/where there are copies of which versions of your documents.

Seeing as all documents not attended to eventually get lost.

Idea:
Just check if the alias that you are going to overwrite is the same as the previous-default.
if it is , assume you can update it. If it's tinkered with, keep the tinkered version.
Additionaly you can add a default aliases button which would reset all aliases to the newest.

Wouldn't that cover most uses?
I never used aliases as opera did them better from the searchbox - I only used them for websites.

General Software Discussion / Re: LetMeType: Freeware text
« on: March 23, 2007, 08:36 AM »
I can't LetMeType work properly in Vista, installation and running it works fine, however I cannot select anything from the popup menu, as it disappears on mouse over and no keyboard shortcuts are defined AFAIK. Also the helpfile is in an unsupported format.

You can also try the free (for personal use) Phrase Express 4 Beta. The beta adds support for formatted text (f.e. RTF) and vista compatibility.

I have tried it for a day now and it's very versatile without becoming too complicated.

Living Room / Re: New fees are big trouble for Pandora
« on: March 20, 2007, 04:13 AM »
And not just Pandora either:

http://somafm.com/news/
The Copyright Royalty Board has announced new copyright licensing fees for internet radio stations. The new fees are a staggering increase over our previous annual royalty rate of about $22,000 to over $600,000 for 2006. And the fees are even higher in 2007, based on our current listenership, they'll be over $1 million dollars for 2007! (Which is 3-4 times what we hope to raise in 2007). If you think this is unfair to internet radio, and you are an American citizen, you can send a letter to your congressman showing your support for internet radio. We already have the attention of Congress, so now you have to let them know you support internet radio and that royalty rates shouldn't be structured in a way that will put small webcasters out of business.

We need to raise at least $15,000 each month to meet our current minimum operating budget. (The newly announced royalty rates will substantially increase our costs!)

After some help from a colleage and 2 hours of browsing I can present:
http://www.snapfiles...or/covercreator.html
http://www.spadixbd....etools/jdirprint.htm

Use the directory printer to get a list, copy the part that matters into the Covercreator software as a backcover, add details, and print.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: DVD File Arranger
« on: March 09, 2007, 05:08 AM »
I have several DVDs worth of projects that I would like to backup to DVD. I would like to see a coding snack that can sort (grouped by folder) files into multiple folders of a fixed max-size, in a way that all folders all as full as possible. It would be excellent if I could specify the max-size of each output-folder to make it flexible (CD-R, DVD-r, or X MB etc.) It might exist already but I cannot come up with the right search query.

It's a little hard to explain so please see the example below. Say i've got the following projects:
  • Project a: 100mb
  • Project b: 10mb
  • Project c: 60mb
  • Project d: 40mb
  • Project e: 20mb
  • Project f: 120mb
Now I want to back them up on my special 150MB discs, what projects should I put on which disc to use the least amount of discs?
I'd run the program and it would move the folders around the output could be:
Folder '01': project b,e,f (150mb)
Folder '02': project a,d (140mb)
Folder '03': project c (60mb)

What do you think? Thanks for your time, Sander

What's great about Popcorn is that it downloads mail headers only, you can then delete the mail off the mailserver and never retrieve the full mail. This can be good for those on dial-up with friends sending huge attachments or victims or massmail attacks. Also means this program is good for on the move.

I did notice WinRar not being allowed to extract into Program Files anymore so you might be right. Thanks again.  I'll add a screenshot to show you the layout issues.

Are you looking into making FARR more compatible with Vista:

  • FARR seems to write out settings (to itself?) when the app is closed. This does not work in VISTA unless the app is run as administrator. Windows Defender will not start apps that require administrator privs on startup -> have to start FARR manually -- then UAC prompt appears.
  • Because you can/t know in advance when you're going to change FARR options, you'll always run it in admin privs mode
  • Because of the prompt and increased security it's hard to instantly use it, so it takes away the most positive thing about FARR -- speed  and ease of usage.
  • tray Icon does not blend in with transparency
  • status bar of FARR is cut off at 2/3th height
Thanks for your great work. It's very much appreciated.

Living Room / Re: Thoughts on why Digg failed
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:02 AM »
Probably because most people think they know better than the average person. Which means any service focusing on averaging views will not be found to be as good as doing it yourself?

Strange way of opening a debate though: if the starting point is that Digg failed, even though it all depends on what your expectations were.

Catchy title = lots of interest.

It even asked me for commentary when a coworker changed a few files.  :tellme:

I really like this software and I think it should be running on everyone's desktop, for example it can track My Documents and have revisions for when you accidentily overwrite or forget to save your budget. DMS on the desktop. People that lose information or documents is our number 1 most frequent question. Would even allow you to recover if your USB stick breaks.

Opera browser has it in most of its features, such as Opera mail, bookmarks and i'm sure other places.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: eyeOS - Online "Operating System"
« on: February 16, 2007, 04:17 AM »
In online desktops you are remotely working with your private data. So I always get worried, can I get my data out of the online desktop? Will there be copies left behind? Can I cancel accounts? Is my data in a format that can be used by other applications if the open desktop is discontinued or will it be lost? And the obvious one: when there's network problems I won't be able to depend on it or fix it.

This I think will stop them from becoming too popular.  Makes more sense to remotely login to your computer at home, doesn't it? On the other hand, it's amazing to see what can be done. It will probably be able to evolve a lot quicker interface wise to operating systems and therefore they might come up with a few fantastic features that will inspire operating systems to do a better job.

Or is this old school thinking. ;)

Perhaps this is a security hole? Imagina a program that can run with all exe files, look for specific information, and then run the .exe file as normal. You'd never notice.

typing while holding a key costs more time then the 1 additional keypress (enter in case of FARR) saves although it looks quite elegant.

The 'switching between open programs' thing is interesting, i guess that's easily emulated with a couple of lines of autohotkey and an alias (except for the situation when the script does not link your input to any window)
