And I use WinPatrol because it is the only one I found that works on Vista at the moment. The free version is very good and has no nags, so don't forget to buy the pro version if you want to support the author!

Fantastic!! Didn't know I needed it but now I know it's going to be useful already  :Thmbsup:

General Software Discussion / Re: Screencast on 'Direct Access'
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:12 AM »
Great screencast for a great piece of software! I am evaluating the trial as we speak, the textreplacing performance is the best i've seen, a lot better then my AHK script (hotstrings). That and the ease of use of adding/editing abbreviations are the reasons I'm going to buy the program!

Nothing is as annoying as waiting on text being replaced ;)

Can I ask what software you used to make the screencast the interface looks really slick.

Living Room / Picnik -- online 'picasa'-like webapp
« on: May 17, 2007, 10:14 AM »
I really thought this webservice was already discussed but a search didn't turn anything up:

Picnik lets you edit all your photos online, from one easy place. It's the most amazing webapp i've ever tried: it does everything picasa does (well.. not the organising functions) right in your browser.

picnik.png

Crop, resize, autofix, redeye,rotate, exposure etc etc it's all here and it works like a charm! Even filters like distort and blur. It can crop to any dimension, as well as several  webservices (last.fm, myspace) avatar sizes.

Load and save straight to flickr. Yep. Definately worth a look.

Proxies? turned off some kind of anti-virus setting? anti-spam?

or....
You receive a "Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e" error message when you try to send or receive e-mail in Outlook or in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191687
CAUSE
The client connects to a port that is blocked or unavailable on the mail server. If the client is trying to send a message, the blocked port is 25, and if the client is trying to retrieve a message, the blocked port is 110. Refer to the error message for the protocol and port numbers.

So it looks like SSL is not accepting your connection in this case.

Are you using some software called Msgtag?? (it claims to allow you see when recepients have read your messages)

http://www.msgtag.com/support/oe/

It looks like your system is set up to relay messages to this program.

Perhaps you have removed the program, or you ran a spyware scanner that removed it?

General Software Discussion / Re: "Files NOT Used" utility
« on: May 17, 2007, 02:52 AM »
I have never used it myself but maybe you can drag the files from locate to Drag+Drop Robot from our very own genius Mouser.

Am going to try this out at work tomorrow. Looks good and a good replacement of my many scribbles-on-notepad-which-weeks-later-i-can't-read method. automatic changes documentation is another step closer towards actually usable development tools. Let's just wait for programming editors that can show documentation in a seperate side column alongside the coding, and it should be a lot easier to properly document code without getting in the way. ;)

Locate32 comes to the rescue... again!  :-* Lightning fast to index, useful in a miriad of ways.

AutoHotkey uses the new UPX executable compressor that was only recently released. Apparently AVG mistakenly reports this as the Generic4.IRO trojan. This is not just in my executable but with any executable produced by AHK. See the detailed explanation here. Updated definitions will probably fix this.

It is not a trojan, the anti-virus provider does not recognise the UPX compressor properly.

Have you checked that utility to ensure it works?
The Opera help file says this:
Master Password

To prevent other people from using your certificates, you can set a master password with strong 168-bit triple DES encryption.

You will then be asked to enter your master password when you want to use your certificates.
Select a password that is impossible to guess and keep it secret
Set Opera to ask for the master password every time needed if other people have access to your computer or user account

You can also use the master password to protect your e-mail, news, and Wand passwords.
Would be hard to unwand? Or does this mean that without a master password all the wand password are unsecure?

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox
« on: May 16, 2007, 10:42 AM »
The main reason for the switch back was that I think Firefox is more useful for web research with integration with notetaking tools, delicious tagging, etc.

Hmm do you think I should focus on developers supporting and supplying the 'configuration' (big word for some as simple as what it is) file or make it as easy as possible for end-users to add in apps? Would be interesting to hear.

For example one way of doing it would be for smallware authors to provide a latest.php link like discussed in another thread and an ini file themselves. (fully decentralised auto update)
Another way would be for me to have a database with application configuration files (semi centralised auto update) that can be recognised.
Or add in a possibility for end users to specify  download locations to monitor (manual personal update)

1765
I wonder how many people would stop using the app when it goes from $0 to $1. (the fact of paying for an app and the 'cubersome' proces of doing so). That's why donationcoder does it right. You don't mind going through the cubersome process once if you can then pay multiple times. Maybe mouser should licence the micropayment system!  :Thmbsup:

 :-* It works! now I have to stop the habit of checking the forum manually...

 :tellme: Oh, and a feature request to keep you off the streets ;) Could you make it somehow that I could switch between:

Thanks so much :D

Maybe by allowing us experts to change the RSS feed the notifications are based on? (don't know if that would work)

1767
Ah I see. I'm running vista. You're only allowed to create a file in the root directory when run as administrator passing through UAC.
If you could change it to the Temporary files environment variable %temp% then it would run as normal user.

A file doesn't get created otherwise.

Hey Wordzilla I just installed this program and it's great maybe now I won't check the forum every 15 minutes at work.
However all the post contents are empty for me, even in the Show Recent Posts option! The title is displayed but nothing else.

Living Room / Re: Cool Google trick: search file types
« on: May 16, 2007, 05:15 AM »
Note that the trendline is about newsitems that feature the fileformats in their acticle, not the amount of files of each type!

If for example there is a big scandal about docx, then the trendline would go up because of all the reports, without any additional docx files being indexed by google.

Unfortunately the filetype: query is not allowed within trends.

Hey great script: comments with a dual monitor setup:
  • fullcreen app always goes to screen 1: feature or bug? you decide
  • I see a pixel or two on screen 2 (right border) edit: ahh one of the two variables (padding to 0 solves it  :Thmbsup:
  • add WinSet, Redraw,,%ID% before end of subroutine to prevent screen redrawing options on vista!

refreshfix sourcecode
fs_engaged := 0 ; is "fullscreen" engaged for some window?
padding := 0 ; additional padding width to remove, in pixels

#f::
if (fs_engaged = 0) {
    ID:=WinActive("A")
    WinGetPos, oldX, oldY, oldW, oldH ; save old dimensions
    WinSet, Style, -0xC00000, ahk_id %ID% ; remove titlebar/WS_CAPTION
    WinSet, Style, -0x40000 , ahk_id %ID% ; remove borders/WS_SIZEBOX
    WinSet, AlwaysOnTop , On, ahk_id %ID%

    ;; work out current desktop resolution
    SysGet, m, Monitor
    desk_width := mRight - mLeft
    desk_height := mBottom - mTop

    WinMove, ahk_id %ID%,, -padding,-padding
    ,desk_width+2*padding, desk_height+2*padding

    fs_engaged:=1
} else {
    ;; reverse all the operations performed above
    WinSet, AlwaysOnTop , Off, ahk_id %ID%
    WinSet, Style, +0xC00000, ahk_id %ID%
    WinSet, Style, +0x40000 , ahk_id %ID%
    WinMove, ahk_id %ID%,, oldX,oldY, oldW,oldH
    fs_engaged:=0
}
WinSet, Redraw,,%ID%

BrowserTraySwitch / No longer switching browsers
« on: May 16, 2007, 03:12 AM »
Hello Mouser I am using BrowserTraySwitch but it stopped working a few days ago. When I change the default browser only the BTS icon changes but the default browser stays the same (tested with the Internet icon as well as launching URL from FARR).  I tried reinstalling BTS; setting firefox as default;running as admin; but to no avail. Running on Vista (might have something to do with it).

The debug options in BTS seem to be limited, is there anything I can try to find out what is wrong? Thanks :)

13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.
(emphasis mine) Something tells me the disk capacity setting will not limit the amount of RAM.

1774
mostly for either unreliable servers such as motherboard manufacterers in taiwan or to speed up files over 1cd large, or to download many files on 1 site at a time.

Am testing out FDM now! I actually used it before, but I couldn't find any background info on the company.
