Living Room / Large Screens .. High DPI
« on: March 04, 2009, 07:47 PM »
My pet peeve for the past couple years, applications still don't properly adjust to higher dpi (120 DPI). It's might hard to read anything on the screen when you resolution is 1920x1200 and dpi is at normal (96dpi).

Shareware authors take note!

I have several shareware programs that I am unable to access the config screens properly. More than half the settings are off the config window because I use a higher dpi setting.

I have emailed several of the shareware program authors/developers... nada.  :(

@rjbull

Will look into clipmagic.. Thanks.

*update*

Very nice find rjbull!

I managed to figure out most of the common fuctions within five minutes of using it. I love the filter settings choices especially the rule "window" contains "whatevername". I made a few web site categories using the name of the site as the window and clipmagic automagically put the clips in the right category based on my rules.

It almost covers most of my needs. I emailed the author (new feature request) for the ability as a filter action/function to be able to copy a given clip to however many categories. So it is basically a "member" of however groups.

On the cosmetic side, the UI is a bit dated and there are a few non-essential windows in where the text goes beyond the visible "window". This probably because I have my screen font size set to large (pretty hard to read normal size text when your resolution is 1920x1200).

@Darwin

Yep.. I am also using Clipmate. I suggested my feature request to the author awhile back..

@Mouser

Wow.. That is some serious undocumented feature/function of CHS, custom sql coding/queries.

I was looking at Clipboard Help and Spell earlier. I will have to play around with it.
Thanks for the heads up.

General Software Discussion / Clipboard program help/recommendations
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:37 AM »
Is there a clipboard program that saves to a database, auto groups (based on keyword groups you make in the program) whatever you cut/copy and allows the clips to be a part of multiple groups based on the content?

example:

clip copied: http://fileforum.bet...aMonkey/1004522272/1

keyword groups made in program x: fileforum and MediaMonkey

clip should be a "member" of both keyword groups so if I click on either group I should see it.

Living Room / Re: Bad smells ... UPS recommendations ?
« on: February 02, 2009, 10:26 PM »
I have been quite happy with MGE Systems UPS line. I think at some point APC bought them or had a merger .. . so avoid www.mgeups.com. It tries to shove APC at you (when I selected USA).

The site you want is www.mgeops.com. The nova line is pretty darn good. Sticker shock if you see the price on their website. I would shop around (the web) for more realistic price.

Living Room / Re: Vista has gone nuts: [Major] Help please?
« on: January 02, 2009, 01:19 AM »
Quick test:

In safe mode, create another user. Reboot and log in as that new user. If it goes to the desktop and you can use Firefox fine and what not, ... chances (on your regular user account) are that either you have some application(s) conflicting or your user registery is whacked.

In my case, I wasn’t able to log in to my desktop, it would accept my password and screen would go blank with a mouse cursor (I could move it around and what not) but it would just sit there forever.

I did my new user test account and it logged in fine to the desktop.

What the problem finally turned out to be is that I had a couple persistent mapped drives ( on my regular account, mapped to laptop and nas). I had disconnected my laptop to upgraded the hard drive in it. Vista freaked out that one my mapped drives was no longer “available” so it promptly decided that it would keep trying to make a connection before it would even get me to my desktop.

My quick fix: disconnected my network cable from my desktop (logged me straight to my desktop after that), went to Disconnect Network Drives and deleted the one that was for my laptop. Reconnected my network cable rebooted the machine and it logged me in just fine.

Very highly recommended and I am now a logitech zealot, for lack of a better term, although I won't attack you if you use Microsoft ;-)

Logitech Cordless Trackman Wheel
Mine went bad a few months after the 5 year warranty. I called Logitech up and all they wanted was the serial number and model. Two days later I had a brand new Cordless Trackman Wheel.  :-*

I would recommend ATI based cards. Their drivers are generally more stable and they actually tell you what they fix and if there are known issues.

My main issue with nvidia based cards is that they seem to F'up royally when it comes to 3D games or features, especially if that game or application crashes. ATI based cards/drivers seem to recover gracefully (no reboots needed). Note: Ati's lower priced/speed cards seem to have the most weird issues with drivers. Another thing to keep in mind, I think their driver software has an dynamic overclock feature, I turn that off by default. I haven't seen that option in their newer drivers so I am guessing they put that feature if you install they catalyst software.

I kicking myself atm for buying nvidia based video card (9600 gt 1gb displayport, hdmi, under $80).. especially after promising myself I would never buy their cards till they fix their driver issues/problems. I said the same thing about ATI many years ago (think *before* radeon 9500).

Post radeon 9500, their drivers have been pretty good (compared to nvidia) assuming you use their drivers and not the catalyst desktop or whatever they call it.

I just bought this case from Newegg.

CoolerMaster CM 690
That looks like an awesome case.  I'm going to go with it unless I come across something better.  Thanks!

Is it me or is it a bit odd to have the power supply at the bottom of the case under the motherboard? Two things strike me:

BTX form factor standard (or a variation I think).
NM .. still ATX. Can I go hide now? ah well still good reading at Toms.

Wiki BTX

Tom's Hardware - Much better explanation
BTX - Tom's Hardware

Corsair -  Yes did the memtest+ and gave tech the result. I think I was just dealing with a PITA tech with zero customer experience. :(

Memory: Corsair isn't the cheapest but is good and comes with a lifetime no quibble warranty.

YIKES!~

I had the exact opposite experience with their warranty department. In March I had purchased 4 GB DDR2 Dominator line RAM and both sticks went bad on me.

Bleeping Tech refused to create an RMA till I tried every timing under the sun in my BIOS advanced memory settings. Long story short, I ended up telling them that they had lost a good customer with their horrible support.

I went back to Crucial memory.

I sure hope they plan on adding back multiple sources for movie collector... or at the very least, provide a plugin architecture for others to develop plugins.

Crud.. didn't mean to go off on a tangent. I saw key words.. Collector 6.

Thanks Josh.

Thanks for sharing.

Dang.. I am glad your issue was solved and fixed, Carol!  :o

I just recently switched to Outlook 2007 (made more sense since I now own a wm6 smartphone). Good thing I haven't downloaded any SP's for it.
