Hmm.. wonder how Tab Candy is going to handle pages with Flash activity. In my experience, Flash with Firefox, tend to have high cpu usage for whatever reason.

These days just about every other page has flash something or other embedded with it (think adverts for instance).

General Software Discussion / Re: Synergy Plus
« on: July 25, 2010, 01:12 PM »
I use Multiplicity Pro at home and work.

Synergy and Input director (to my knowledge) currently can not copy/paste files. Deal breaker in my case.

The ability of being able to transfer files (copy/paste) is so very convenient plus being able have everything working and running within minutes is a bonus.

I am actually using office XP. Loads extremely quick on a quad core 8GB ram.

It's perfect for my needs. Frankly, I don't even use 1/10th of all the "features" office xp has.

I managed to snag it at a garage sale for $5 shrink wrapped box and all.

Synergy+ seems to work well in XP sp3 and Vista64/W7 32/64. UAC may need to be turned off. We have it turned off by default at work.

As for the original Synergy, I have only personally tested it on XP SP2. Frustrating setup but works well.

Update:

W7 32bit - synergy-plus-1.4.1-Windows-x86.exe

Synergy+ has improved a bit over the old(er) version but it still has a ways to go after you install it. It needs a quick setup wizard after installation guiding the user in asking if the current install is the master or client and to do the need be accordingly.

I spent a good 15 minutes (after watching my co-worker trying to figure it out to no avail) trying to figure out why the client wasn't seeing the master. Ended up having to tell the program to copy the log to the clipboard and then paste it to notepad.

Once I saw the log (full of tried to connect to master.. connected but refused because not in master map). Gee whiz.. very helpful.

Now on the master (computer) you can't do diddly once the server service is running. Had to stop the service, go into the settings, figure out the button that brought up the "Map". Basically it's a grid with the master computer in the center.

Then had to drag the icon of a computer to an empty grid area (figured that part out by accident, the dragging computer).

The newly dragged computer is your "client" machine that you have to configure by double clicking it. Remember to name it differently from the alias name or the program freaks out and refuses to start the "master" service.

Once you get over the confusing setup procedure, it's quite good, smooth mouse panning from one screen to another. You can copy and paste text, but not files. There is a whole discussion about if they will implement that feature or not.

Bottom line:

Post install setup configuration is confusing (not nearly as bad as the original synergy), but once you master that part, everything else is a breeze.

Odd indeed..  ;D

Did I miss something...? Is it common practice to charge to resend a license code/file? Or is it the beginning of an easy money making trend?

Very cool! Glad to see someone picking up the synergy project even if it is an offshoot.

I will update you on how it works. I have a few guinea pigs at work that are willing to try the rc's out.

And whats the point of having an anti-virus that will act as a virus itself?

;D ;D ;D maybe we need a new kind of software utility:
"AntiVirus Watchdog"

it's job is to watch over all anti-virus program activity and kill the antivirus if it gives a false alarm.

Actually.. I think AVG has a service called AVG Watchdog.. stupid thing seems to prevent license upgrade/renewal (from avg server console admin app) if license has expired or has something like less than 30 days before the expiration date. Go figure..  :-\

Heh, heh, nice one sri. It's not the look though it's the plugin support and support of groups in Maxthon that keep me here. I have a set up 5 pages that open up with Maxthon - can't live without that. And I love Roboform, which rules out Opera altogether.

If you haven't already discovered Morning Coffee, I think it should something similar to what you are looking for.

A gui for Saving and restoring existing Windows shares would be awesome, especially if the application would zip up the contents of the share(s), as a selective option based on the available shares.

Microsoft has method of doing the first part (backing up/restore shares) as reg edits. Linky

The app should be able to back up shares and files (permissions and users would be appreciated) based on selection as a self extracting executable so that restoring should be simple.

I am sure others would have more desires and suggestions as to how this may be done or achieved.

Living Room / Google Calendar Experts

*update*

Duh.. It really did import it, though it did a very basic job AND (I found it purely by accident) it only shows up on the calendar if you click on your name under "My Calendar". I was naturally assuming when I import calendars into my google calendar, it would auto show up instead of having to click on my own name to show my own calendar which is already open.

Downright confusing..

I am hoping someone would be kind enough to tell me how to import Outlook ICS files into Google Calendar.  Assuming it is possible that is.

All my travel sites allow me to export my schedule/itinerary as Outlook ICS files. My calendar is google calendar and it only imports outlook csv files or iCal ics files.

I already tried to import outlook ics file into google calendar, it says it processed it but nothing shows up in the calendar.  :(

The Vostro line isn't too bad. Just make sure to get a 3+ year on-site warranty (adds another $120 I think).

Get the extended warranty and a battery backup system. My workplace is primarily a dell shop (over 7000+ dells) and let's just say we are thankful for the extra long warranty our dells come with (negotiated 5 year warranty for the price of 3).

I have a WIP theory that Dell engineers their products to require warranty servicing.. kinda like when your car reaches 3000 or 5000 miles,  the check engine/maintence light comes on

Living Room / Re: Bad Refurbs

@Shades - Yes.. price (and heat generated) was factor when purchasing the hd... never realized that their support was this atrocious.

@Darwin -  mm.. think the ice cubes really helped.  :P

@nite_monkey - Seagate's refurbs *prior* to Maxtor acquisition/buyout what not, was pretty decent. I still have a few seagate refurbs running fine.

It seems any refurbs after Maxtor buyout, quality and support went downhill. It was so bad that we (at work) told dell to stop sending us any refurb seagates (all WD's now).

My guess would be that seagate is cutting costs and slapping refurb stickers on rebadged maxtors.

Living Room / Bad Refurbs
« on: November 21, 2009, 08:07 PM »
Anyone know of sites that keep tabs on companies that send out bad refurbs? I know it would save people a lot headaches if they know which companies provide reliable replacements and which companies to avoid.

I am so mad at Samsung atm...

Brand new laptop HD bad after 1 week. RMA'ed, replacement refurb drive worse than the one I sent to them. RMA'ed the refurb, replacement refurb worse than the first refurb. More time and money wasted.. great way to build brand trust.

WTF.. (is it okay to use acronyms?) do companies really think their customers are idiots?

Downed two glasses of iced tea to calm down.  :)

You can always buy a keyboard with an integrated trackball.

I would recommend a portable clip-on trackball. It seems clip-on trackballs have gone the way of the dodo (in the States that is).

The only one that I have been able to spot is the Traveler 350.

I have been using Qsoft RAMDisk Enterprise edition for years now.

XP 32bit and more recently, on vista 64bit.

Current usage: 2GB ramdisk.
Ramdisk holds my pagefile 1.5 GB and my firefox cache and yes I do notice a difference in speed and less HD thrashing.
