I think it was more or less to keep us assembly language guys from getting paranoid after locking up the machine again. :)  I was too poor to get a break-out switch. Had to cycle the power every time. :)

a bit OT..

Heh! Reminds me of when my buddy was trying to teach me the basics of assembly programming on an XT machine, problem was I built the machine from cannibalized parts from other broken machines and the damn thing would always shock me (whenever I missed the a key on the metal keyboard) and then freeze up.  ;D

Played Power cycle (hoping I wouldn't get shocked due to missing paint around the switch).. bzzt.. atleast a few times an hour.  :-* I can tell you a lot of cussing was involved.

Never did learn assembly between the cussing and him leaving a few weeks later (heard he ended up getting hitched a couple months later in Holland).

Living Room / Re: Help: Recommend flash drive(s) for small files
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:51 AM »
I am currently looking at an eSATA/USB flash drive (kanguru or super talent).

Looks interesting from everthing I am reading, plus I have an esata port on the top of my case.

Anyone used one of those yet?

I sync to my flash drive, and occasionally I back it up to another flash drive, structure and all.

I am thinking of syncing to a cloud storage service but the downside to that is always have to have the internet available.

Living Room / Help: Recommend flash drive(s) for small files
« on: February 28, 2011, 01:34 PM »
I am having a hard time finding flash drives that are small file(s) friendly (read fast write/delete).

The brands I have used: Corsair, Super Talent, Lifetime, Edge, PNY. Capacity range: 2GB - 16GB.

Relatively speaking, they all tanked when it came to dealing with small files (4KB and smaller).

Just recently, I spent a couple hours moving ~13K files (most) under 4KB size. Total amount: 5GB.  >:(

All my flash drives are really fast when it comes to dealing with big files (over a meg).
As a test I copied 5 files, each 1GB and that process only took a few minutes.

Recommendations? Anyone? :)

Thanks! I took part in the charity bundle deal.

Glad to hear that 50% of the amount went to Queensland Disaster Relief fund.  :-*

Fabulous app, MonitorES!

Monitor goes into power save mode, standby, off or close to it when you press windows key+L.

Locks keyboard/screen and turns it off.

I installed KeePass, but I was entirely unable to get any browser integration to work at all.

What exactly do you mean by integration with a browser?  I can't (quickly, anyway) see anything about that in their Web Help.

It does have the ability to try to fill in a password form by pressing a hotkey.  Tools > Options > Advanced tab (right hand end), click the Auto-Type button near the bottom right, and you can set the hotkey to make it pop up?  Surely that's not what you meant?

If you Firefox, KeeFox

I haven't tried it, though I plan on migrating to Keepass once v6 of Roboform no longer functions with Firefox.

135
ah! must have missed it on betanews..  ;D

Pretty much stopped reading anything about Roboform on betanews, even though it is my favorite site to download software from.

Snipped most of the content, as Josh pointed out, it was posted earlier, but I wanted to share my disgust on "What if I'm still not satisfied?" part. NOT!

It seems Wilders Security forum has a Roboform thread. Link

Official Answer from Siber System:
=----------------------------------------------------------------------------------=

" RoboForm ver 6 is still not requiring additional payments
and you can use it without any hindrance

RF ver 7 is a MAJOR upgrade and as such it requires new payment.

this is our 1st major upgrade in 6 years "

=----------------------------------------------------------------------------------=

Sooo... v2 thru v6 were just bug fixes?? umm.. dang.. I know something is wrong.. just not sure what.. >:(

I have sent my "plea" to Siber Systems asking if they will honor their "free" upgrades to existing customers prior to v.7.

I haven't seen anything official from them in regards to old customers who purchased software in good faith after experiencing what the product(s) does and "free" upgrades incentive.

I understand that "free" upgrades isn't a sustainable system but please think about your existing customers, at least grandfather in existing customers, make it time limited even (assuming company sent an email out saying something like new license change, please respond by x date to keep your old license system active).

Wonder if Siber Systems hosts an official forum ... hah! that would be a riot.  ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3.6.13 Flash Crash
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:25 PM »
@app103

Tried that.. no worky.. though I am building up an impressive list of plugin-container.exe in my task manager. :o Thanks for trying to find a solution.

@Bamse

Woohoo!! You did it! Firefox doesn't hang nor does it add any additional plugin-container.exe to my task manager. Just watched various sample youtube videos and things went smooth.  8) Thanks!!

I haven't rebooted yet.. (only way to clear the plugins collection).

General Software Discussion / Firefox 3.6.13 Flash Crash
« on: December 20, 2010, 06:10 PM »
Anyone else noticed that firefox 3.6.13 seems to crash on flash video sites?

Sometimes it will play flash, but when close the page or choose another flash video, firefox will freeze and if you are still on a flash video page, it will show you an error saying flash crashed, click here to send adobe an error report..

I have uninstalled existing flash, and reinstalled from Adobe.. still crashes... and fills up my task manager with plugin-container.exe. >:(

Thanks guys

Has anyone noticed if they had a "free" roboform everywhere license when they went to upgrade using their name and existing order?

When I went to the "upgrade" purchase page, I noticed I had 1 roboform everywhere license ... didn't see anything about it expiring (though I haven't installed the app, still using roboform 6 and 2go 6).

I don't plan on "upgrading" anytime soon. Siber Systems should do the right thing and grandfather in existing customers with unlimited upgrade policy for any existing licenses.

My fear is that Firefox 4 or with any new browser, V6 will be incompatible..  :(

DSL - 3mbps though the actual speed is roughly 2mbps

For the price I am paying for country dsl, in the city/town, you get 15mbps.  :(

Living Room / Simple Google
« on: September 09, 2010, 04:14 PM »
I finally found a simple google search engine.. (um not sure if that came across well).

http://www.google.com/xhtml

It's the mobile google search engine. I don't need anything fancy.. just show the *bleeping* results/finds.

No I don't want to see picture(s) or youtubes of my search criteria or a sidebar... so on so forth of all google search engine junk.

I made the mobile link my homepage.

DD-WRT should do everything you need:

Interesting.. will have to take a look at using tc command. thanks!

@4wd - Zyxel is a bit out of my budget.. though I have had a zyxel router before and it's interface (gui) reminds me of Netgear.

Living Room / Re: Router Q: Bandwidth thottling

I would just buy something compatible with DDWRT (list here: http://www.dd-wrt.co...es#Supported_Devices ) and use the throttling feautures built-in to the software.
- Oshyan

I was looking at DDWRT software/firmware but didn't come across anything concrete about bandwidth throttling.

« on: July 31, 2010, 06:33 PM »
Do any consumer routers support bandwidth throttling/packet shaping? 4-8 port router with wireless support.

It would really help in a family situation, prevent certain members of the family from hogging all the bandwidth due using peer to peer like apps for instance.

I have tried the QoS and like approach. Really doesn't seem to make a real difference.
