Actually, Darwin, it was yksyks who brought it to my attention -- from the Process tamer... Express your feature requests... thread.

So, thanks to yksyks too!  ;)

Another vote.
That would be extremely convenient.

General Software Discussion / A "Wiki Word" add-in for MS Word?
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:20 PM »
Does it exist? Would it be hard to implement?

Managing hyperlinks in word processors can be quite a pain. A system similar to the one wikis use (the famous CamelCased or "[[ ]]" Wiki Words) would probably be convenient. Anybody knows if such a functionality can be implemented (through a plugin or a macro) to MS Word (or other word processors - TextMaker, OpenOffice.org...)?

BTW, Armando, thanks for the link to BES -- looks worth checking out!

I've been mainly using BES to limit Word's eccentricities in the past : i had problem with grammar checking in French -- I guess French is too much of a complex language for a small CPU.  :)

2433
Maybe others have suggested that before, but one interesting feature IMHO would be to not only change the priority, but to limit the CPU usage for a process (example : from 100%  to something lower). There's already a nice Open Source utility called BES which does that, but... wouldn't it be great if PT could to it all?  :)

BES is a small tool which limits the CPU usage for a specified process: for instance, you can limit the CPU usage of a process which would use CPU 100%, down to 50% (or any percentage you like). With this, you can use other programs comfortably while doing something CPU-intensive in the background. By limiting the CPU load, you can also cool down your CPU immediately when it happens to get too hot. Of course the processing speed will slow down proportionally if you limit the CPU usage, but it should be much better than crashing because of heat or (in the worst scenario) having your computer broken with a burned CPU.

Furthermore, BES can hide any windows you don't want to be seen for some reason, without killing the process, and restore the hidden windows again anytime you like.

I don't know if that will boost your mood and help you to have the greatest faith in your surgeon and the surgery, but a lady I know went through something similar and she's now fine. Her life is much MUCH better.

I wish you all the best, Ken.

Take care.

Living Room / Re: How to choose a credit card?
« on: August 07, 2007, 07:57 PM »
The thing is, it's pretty hard to do certain things without a credit card... Like renting a car in advance (for a trip or whatever), buying stuff over internet, etc.

So it's best to learn how to discipline yourself and use your card as if it was a debit card (ie : never spend what you don't have). Of course, if you absolutely can't do that, it's another story...  :)

Another rule of thumb most people use to not get in "trouble" : use your your credit card to spend money you already have. Unless you really know what you're doing (you're investing at a very high interest rate, a check is coming, etc.), of course.

You could just go to your bank and see what they offer.

Some basic criterias :

- Low interest rate
- No annual fee
- Fraud Liability Guarantee
- And maybe pick a well known one (easier when/if you travel): VISA, Mastercard, American  Express...
- A second one can be handy if you loose the other. Just don't keep them in the same place.

You could also check the web... There might be some reviews.

 :)

@iphigenie & jquigley :

I remember testing Above & Beyond + TimeTo a while ago. I think the main problem was Palm syncing.
But I'll check it out and report back...

Thanks!

Armando, glad that you stumbled upon my AP review.

Thanks for joining the thread!

As you can tell, I rate the program highly.

Yes, I saw that (+ a very nice read)! I think the program and the developer deserve it! IMHO, it's really one of the best time management (and personal project/goal management) tool out there.

Reading through your posts here indicates that you are getting even more deeply into the program than I have.

I've tested AP pretty thoroughly because I want to replace Outlook, and I'm not going to replace it with something adding more inconveniences! Like I said in my first post, I haven't bought it yet -- I am waiting to see what the future version brings to the table : GTD features, better search, etc. If I ever buy it, it will be the Productivity suite.

I also like MLO for task and project management, but AP is more sophisticated. AP’s outlook syncing  is not as smooth — but it’s got some very nice features.

I hope that you will indeed do a full review of AP -- it should be most interesting.  Just wish you could include screenshots, which I think are essential especially in this program in order to fully appreciate it.

I'm running out of time these days, so the review will have to wait, unfortunately. (I must say that writing in English is much slower than French for me!)

For day-to-day task management, I use EssentialPIM Pro.

I've been using Outlook for many years and have tried many many other PIMs. EssentialPIM is certainly one of the best out there (and it synchronizes with the palm! well, it used to?). But I do prefer Outlook, even if EssentialPIM is better for notes and the tasks outliner. All in all, it seemed bit too "basic" (lacking some other features I use frequently)... But it's been a while since I’ve tested it, so I'll be happy to read your review and learn some more about the newest versions!

All that said, I'm still looking for a fairy godmother who will wake me up each morning with a gentle pat on the head and instructions about just what I need to do during the day.

If you find one, ask her if she's got some friends! :)

Armando's problem is the same that I described here:

iPhone doesn't like anything but iTunes :/

of course...

I just found a nice and recent review of AP on the "Becoming A Writer Seriously" Web Site (mouser mentioned it at some point): Achieve Planner: Set Your Goals, Plan Your Time.

And, maybe, if there's enough interest --eventually, of course -- I could ask the developer for a DC discount (am I aloud to do that?? or should an "official" founding DC member do it)...

2445
Different skins don't have any effect -- predictably since the option window is not skinned.

Let me add that the bug occurs only when I'm changing the Height value with the little "arrow" buttons. It doesn't happen when I change the value using the keyboard.

2446
Ok, let me try this with other skins since it looks like a GUI problem.

2447
There seem to be a little bug with the "Plugins, Updates, Fonts"-->"Advanced Custom Font Configuration". Don't know if anybody mentionned it yet.

When I start changing the "EditBox Height" value, everything I'll click on afterwards in the option window will add one unit to the EditBox Height. it's not even possible to close the option window normally (atl+f4, the right corner X icon, etc.). The only way to get rid of the option window, is to hit the hotkey (Pause/Break, Alt+Space or Ctrl+Space) twice to make farr disappear. When relaunched with the hotkey, farr's fine.

General Software Discussion / Re: User settings storage debate
« on: August 02, 2007, 10:06 AM »
And the answer to your question is a big fat no, unless you consider manually locating and exports your applications registry key(s) (providing they're not disguised of course) and importing them at a later date, after modifying any fully qualified paths etc contained therein easy.

Thanks Ehtyar. It confirms some things...

2449
AP does "prioritize your lists using the ABCD system Automatic scheduling", it "computes the start/end dates of your projects and tasks based on expected effort, priorities, and weekly schedule", and will also compute scores for tasks and projects according to task priority, project priority, Date, Focus, Status, and maybe some others that I forget -- obviously, all these can be changed according to the context, etc.

Achieve Planner's feature -- and there are many -- can be found at the web site (make sure you click on the "learn more" links to get more detailed explanations). The Feature Comparison is helpful too.

Really cool, AK_.
